Hello there. I have a question for the Cellufun people and any mobile app developers here.

"That’s one great thing about developing sites for the iPhone. We know the exact capabilities and screen size."

I don't understand this statement...aren't mobile WAPS supposed to variable width and height so the screen size won't matter? Why does knowing the screen size of a specific mobile device matter when developing a mobile WAP?

Greg -- thanks for your input we've had the actual iPhone for less than a few hours :) But the goal of Cellufun is to make its content available to any web enabled phone. Viewport would be properly set within minutes :)

We got an interview with Cellufun CEO this time last month... there was some interesting comments on their revenue model that included product placement within games, as apposed to pure advertising or user based charges.

CelluFun,

I just realized that when I tried it on my iPhone. This really is not an iPhone application, and for Techcrunch to report is as such is surprising.

Those of us that are spending countless hours adapting mobile sites to the iPhone's capabilities are not just taking our mobile web sites and saying the are made for the iPhone. We are incorporating Ajax so that the screens don't do complete refreshes, and making proper sized buttons and assets for the touch screen.

The fact that when you get to the virtual pet, you need to zoom in on every screen just to see is an example of why it is NOT made for the iPhone.

You might want to detect the iPhone usr agent, and set a viewport to the proper size. Small fix, big impact.

Actually I just checked it out and it's a bit disappointing. This is in no way an iPhone specific application. It looks like it will work on any phone.

They should be taking advantage of the touchscreen features and Javascript of the iPhone.

We have built an iPhone specific application that is like Del.icio.us and Stumbleupon combined and also integrates SMS. It uses Ajax and other features that make it like a native iPhone application. iPhone apps need to take advantage of knowing that all iPhones are exactly the same size, and have the same capabilities.

I would expect more from CellUFun.

Hi Greg,
Duncan's correct.

The MobilePet myPhone does work for most handsets, not just the iPhone, even though it works from there as well.

We wanted to make sure this game had the largest potential audience.

Thanks and enjoy everyone!

The biggest users of the iPhone will probably be the younger crowd (18-25) mainly due to the fact that they can consolidate their phone and their iPod and the fact that business ffunctionality like receiving corporate email is not as important to that group as a whole...So Virtual Pet games will probably have great appeal to this age group. I'm sure we will see many more apps like this one in the next few days-to-weeks.

I'm guessing alot of these WAP apps will see a resurgence, now that they have a decent browser to be displayed on.
