I agree with you guys, CL is losing market, but very slowly. Another site that is gaining popularity is http://www.inetgiant.com. I have been posting ads to them, and recently they have launched UK, Canada and India markets.

I have to say this will be some good competition. Although craigslist is not pretty it still is weak on the GUI. Whereas Kijiji is nice enough to attract a buyer to buy from an organized ad. Craig has the respect yet because it's been free for years but you are not going to be on top forever.

For all the ones who are crying about no ads are posted in their area should think about the age difference between these two competitors. Kijiji is new, craigslist has been around the block a few times, maybe cruising the erotic section which is tooo exposed and supporting illegal activities. But as the phrase from an earlier response "No erotic services and men posing as women seeking men" for Kijiji; I'm actually looking forward to not seeing that anymore. It's too exposed, and I believe Craig does not really care about community where there is no public awareness on the dangers of an escort services: Drugs, Pimps, STD's etc. Better yet think about the working girls getting robbed, stabbed, raped, brutally beaten. Better yet think about the John getting robbed..... If they are desperate to sell their body for money, think about what they would do to not have sex with you but still get your money......

So my doubts on Craigs involvement with "COMMUNITY" in what is right and wrong is totally a mystery on what he considers "COMMUNITY" and his contributions. The thought of all the drama on the news about home invasions, illegal activity, rapes and stuff like that alone in San Francisco that is tied with Craigslist as a starting point is pretty concerning as a "COMMUNITY" resident.

It can happen to Kijiji too...... Yet if they can control it based on their success off their ebay ratings, than they should build a rating system to slaughter Craigslist as a competitor. Verify ID, $0.99 cent credit card fee for one time to become a member so you know who you are dealing with or something. Make these transactions safe and helpful for these "COMMUNITY BASED" mom and pop shops that offer super services and praise them based on ratings.

I have contacted Craig about a rating system a while back and seems that he doesn't believe in it. But from a seller and buyer stand point where I may be a continuing customer doesn't seem like a factor. Kijiji has not commented today on deploying such a solution.

3rd competitor anywhere? Angel Investors, SI's, developers where are you? Tony from EWanted? Someone?

The bigger they are the harder they fall... Ebay will need to keep Wall Street happy.. If they invest heavily in this area and make a flop with a hard to remember domain for type in traffic - down will go their share price.

Anyone else seen Verticlans http://www.verticlans.com around? I'm in the Philadelphia area and have seen these marketplaces pop up. They basically let anyone create their own online marketplace. Definitely not a threat to Craigslist, but it's interesting how people are always pecking at the giant in online classifieds.

Shortly after eBay aquired the 25% stake in Craigslist I posted a thread on Craigslist's feedback forum discussing eBay's other acquisitions of kijiji.com and rent.com and how ebay will seek to compete with craigslist down the road and possibly seek to undermine Craigslist in someway. It was a very active thread with people giving all types of opinions. Craig came to post on the thread just saying "Don't feed the trolls", and promptly deleted my account. So there's your altruistic Mr. Community for you.

Maybe it's just me, but this looks like a parked site on at first glance. The colors are somewhat obnoxious and looks like it was designed by some call center employees in India.

In terms of how it might fare against CL, let's remember that it took Craig, starting out as an emial event list, over 10yrs to build the audience to what it is today. So i don't think 'Kiji' is going to disrupt this space anytime soon.

What i would like to see is the Google folks get off their ass and do somehting interesting w/Googlebase. This svc has the potential to become a 'Craigslist on steroids' combining rich user profiles w/the power of google search.

Anyway, the eBay user experience has always sucked imo, and they should probably direct their internal resources to improving that vs venturing off to new svcs.

No worries on our end.

Rather than taking the user to the ads instantly, Kijiji forces you through a maze of clicks just to arrive at a category/location of your choice. And, Kijiji doesn't get more local than the major metropolitan areas that it covers. But, if you like to click away for hours, then yeah, they've got a great product.

Compare their service to ours for the Greater Los Angeles Area, AKA the Southland (just a handful of the 200+ cities that we cover in the Southland which gets us to the hyper local level):

Hyper-Local City Links:
anaheim.la/
burbank.la/
irvine.la/
longbeach.la/
malibu.la/
orange.la/
pasadena.la/
riverside.la/
sanbernardino.la/
santamonica.la/
ventura.la/

and, of course,

southland.la/

Enjoy!!!

Last annual report shows that Gumtree, Loquo, and some other classifieds brands are owned by eBay. They seem to be doing well in a number of markets. But don't let facts get in the way of good bashing.

---------------------------------------------------------
control of global classifieds marketplace...he business model and strategy is ON TRACK.
------------------------------------------------
They are not ON Track. They are definitely not on target. Just check Alexa numbers for their European sites. There is no growth. Competitors like Oodle, Markt.de, Loquo are all over the place taking away market share.
