There’s a subset of viral video sits that have been popping up focusing on verticals. One of the more recent entrants was the comedy site Funny Or Die, which made waves when Will Ferrell’s short sketch “The Landlord” exploded across the net (over 36,539,017 views). Monster Dare joins DareJunkies in bringing dares to social video. The idea is a bit like a softer version of MTV’s Jackass Mixed with the competition site Bix.
Monster Dare is a social network where you can wager money on daring your friends or the general public. Each of the dares is broken down into categories like romantic, challenging, or even x rated. When a dare is declared, members can donate to a money pot to entice anyone or a specific person to carry it out. They can collect on the dare if they provide photographic or video proof for the audience. By contrast, Dare Junkies has a large pot that users are competing over, which goes as high as $5,000 for any of the challenges they put on the site.
Since Monster Dare’s payments are made through PayPal, they are somewhat bogged down with transaction fees that may kill the service. They charge 50p if you deposit £5, but nothing on depositing higher amounts. They also charge a flat £1.50 for removing money and take 10% from winning dare funds.

best news… i reportin with credits in my blog
crap
Hey really a cool stuff I think I will also put it down on my blog.
Beyondwww
waiting to see an example;)
Since PayPal Terms of Service forbids it to be used with anything adult, I wonder how long before eBay brings down the hammer on this service. My guess is not very long …
huh? sounds crazy?
But still I do think there is lot of market in Web for Jackass kindda stuff
This is all well and good until they get sued for a wrongful death. Encouraging people to take unsupervised risks without any training is both irresponsible and dangerous. The owners of these websites are taking undue risk and will be responsible for the injuries that ensue. Sure Youtube places stunts on their website, but there is no encouragement nor is their a monetary payoff.
I would feel horrible as an owner of a web-based business that caused the injury, disability or even death of another individual for the entertainment of others.
This startup will not be able to maintain a constant revenue stream, as its market is too niche.
If you want to bet on something with your friends online, and there was significant demand for this betting, then more users would use a “Myspace” or “Facebook” provided widget than an entire site for the process. That way, the betting technology would be integrated into user’s already available technology.
Therefore, the idea of having an entirely separate site for “daring” sounds illogical.
any idea of Lawsuit?
– if I dare a friend to do something and he hurts himself; am I liable>?
-RB
No you are liable for the resulting content created by viewers immitating things broadcasted via your site. Just like Jackass and the lawsuits it incurred. http://www.powe...p?stupid_ID=167
Encouraging dangerous and often illegal behavior is enough to get you in trouble…
RE: Rishi, I was just on the site and it appears they have widgets set up so you can do just what you suggest, ie dares via Facebook, I just set one up and sent it to my frinds.
As for law suits, I’m no lawyer but it does seem scary if people get out of hand. On the whole, i will use it to liven up my facebook life…
All there is to say is nother better than buying humilliation.
Its a grand plan and for all of you pizza faced pessimists who have nothing better to do than dog anyones elses success..
Stuff it
Monster dare is definatly going on my blog
How does this get to TC?
speaking of ethics fun, they should partner with ustream or justin.tv and then the country would go crazy.
在中国为什么不能成功?谁敢来试试
I like it because of the Facebook app., any tools that makes these boring social networking sites more viseral and interactive with my friends is welcome! I loved linking up with old friends on these sites but then found I had nothing to with them, now I can send them all silly odd dares or challenge the fat middle age sods to run marathon, and prove it with a Nike+, so it becomes a fun community tool.
Does tha make it a viable biz? I don’t know and don’t care as i’m not a shareholder!
Well, two points for coming up with a way to engage and attract users, but agree on the risk aspect, lawsuits, etc.
I do think there’s something to finding ways to drive users to create certain types of videos, but I also believe more professionally produced content will evetually dominate the web and user created will take a second seat to it.
Just my .2
I agree with George, their Facebook app is killer! too bad the myspace one is limited.
Good luck, & let the lawsuits roll!
They are based i the UK, so any lawsuits would have to filed there. Anyone here a barrister?
WOW techcrunch coverage is really suffering this week
This site is a GREAT idea, I love the concept, but the all the current dares suck.
Their challange will be to keep a steady flow of interesting dares.
I think this is a unique idea. Hope to hear more.
…will a site like this simply encourage borderline criminal activity for the sake of entertainment. how long before there is a dares to have ‘real’ swordfight or to go pull up down women’s skirts.
sites like this dont bode well for western civilization..
Glad to see Web2.0 pushing back the frontiers of civilization and humanity.
Sounds dangerous – they should also use http://www.kushcash.com to cut down on the fees – fees can kill ya’.
Interesting concept.
There’s a smash an iPhone dare going on for £96, with another tit flashing dare below it going for £50, from the looks of things it won’t be long before the ’shock value’ of these sort of dares go stale.
I want to dare congress to start impeaching Darth Cheney.
Its an interesting concept but it would be more interesting to see if there many takers.
I can imagine lawsuits arising from this pretty quickly.
Looks like DareJunkies.com is dead now.. I remember looking at this site some time ago and the winning videos all included the same actors. Looks like BS.
Will Ferrell should keep doing impressions of George W
hey everybody wat u all doing
