Real Networks has announced the public release of their new Real Player available on their website. We covered the beta release at the beginning of the month along with 20 beta accounts that went fast.
The new player focuses on bridging the gap for video between the desktop and the internet by letting users save and share video from any location on the net. The new player adds a “save this” button to any video playing in your browser. When you click it, Real will download the file in the background as you surf regardless of format. When you play the video back, you’ll have the option of sharing the video with friends, which emails out a link to the original. With the free version of the player you can burn the videos to CD, playable on most DVD players. Paying for the professional version lets you burn directly to DVD. A future version will let you push the videos to a media player instead.
The most notable use for the player will be on the video giant Youtube, which already attracted a series of third party download tools, including our very own. Real Player will recognize and respect DRM restrictions by not downloading restricted content.
The player is still for PC only, but they expect to have a Mac version out later this year.

I downloaded it this morning. Its definately an improvement. Its not sluggish like before and it loads faster
People still use this? QuickTime/iTunes, YouTube/FLV, nor Windows Media Player hasn’t completely wiped out Real? Rob Glaser deserves a Me…… BUFFERING….. BUFFERING…. BUFFERING….. dal of Honor for keeping his company still alive for this long.
I overheard from friend to friend. People keep saying Benoit took steriods. Does this mean there will be no more WWE on local channels?
Is this true?
real player sucks and will never be installed on any computer of mine. that is unless they package it into some kind of root kit, which i wouldn’t put past them. not only are they too busy trying to build up some sort of company around the player that they forgot to (whoops!) make the player actually be able to stream video, they also resort to shady underhanded tactics like making real player open every kind of damn file on the system, and live in the system tray, and just be a general PITA. no thanks!
Nick – with all of the hate comments on the last “real player is launching – we have invites” post – wouldn’t some critical analysis be good here? I am guessing without it, you will see more of #4 type comments here.
I will go ahead and add my “hate comment” to the list. Real Networks lost any credibility when they bundled spyware with their app and took the control away from the user.
I will never install another buggy, bloated Real Networks app on any machine I have control over and I will continue to remove it from client machines any time I find it.
ditto on the hate, never again, and remove from every PC in sight
This is just what I need to rip my interview from NBC’s website:

Lets hope it works.
Thanks Real Player!

can someone comment on the actual recording performance of the new Real Player?
how is the quality? is it easy to use?
How much garbage do they try to install along with it? Real Player is just a trojan for crapware and spyware.
If Real really wanted to prove itself as a player software, it would remove all the junk from the install.
Oh, wait, if they didn’t take money from the spyware companies, they would have been out of business years ago.
If Real want me to be interested in their player, they should open up their formats and allow transcoding.
Maybe this post should have mentioned how much bloatware this player comes with.
hmm….If this version is better than real alternative, maybe I’ll used it to play my real media files..
I refuse to use realplayer, it’s horrible bloated crap and their file format is junk.
I’m downloading the new version now. While I’m not a big fan of RealPlayer, it still resides on my computer along with the other big two – Windows Media Player and Quicktime.
I am unable to download anything behind a proxy
I wanted to check this service and so downloaded RP but I guess it’s time for me to put it in RIP
Cheers!!
Jason
Great addition indeed. I have been using Real Player for a couple of years now and haven’t encountered problems so far. And this newly lanuched platform saves time a lot. Highly recommended!!!
Real Networks can suck my phat c**k.
After installing the last version I spent ages trying to stop it opening up every 2 minutes offering to do everything for me.
Potentially useful software, very very bad functionality.
Real – go to hell.
word
For how they fucked up computer in the past with their shady underhanded bloatware/spyware/malware they’re never going near my computer ever again.
Real, fuck off.
its good effort towards high tech technology
This reminds me of WinAmp –
– except Winamp was better for me then – (haven’t used it in 2 years)
– RealPlayer is a tail / tail sign of p0rn watching – RB
Agree with #5. In the meantime, another Realplayer hater here.
So far so bad. No luck downloading videos. Music skips a lot. Will try again tomorrow. Probably not.
Nick: You cannot write about Real Player without dealing with how hated they are for their malware, “I’ll become your default player no matter what you say!” attitude, their ridiculous all-spam “message center,” and other invasions of our machines. The company is hated for a reason. Instead of touting their latest release, find out why they persist in these tactics. Or is a strategy? You know, journalism!
Real Player and Real Networks SUCK big time. Everyone who now or has ever worked for Real Networks should be ashamed. Their “corporate policies” suck as well.
