Cellfish.com: PC To Mobile Content Sharing
by Duncan Riley on June 26, 2007

cellfish.pngCellfish Media, a spin-off company from media company Lagardère (publisher of Elle magazine) has launched Cellfish.com, a social network and destination portal centered on users sharing music, videos and art between their PCs and mobile devices.

Cellfish.com aims to tackle the issue of being able to share mobile entertainment while retaining the use of such content regardless of handset upgrades or changing service providers. Users are able upload content and display it on their personal Cellfish pages and their cell phones, then share that content with friends from a mobile device or PC. The Cellfish.com portal provides multiple content options including free for download and premium paid offerings on top of user generated content.

It’s an interesting offering, parts of MySpace+Youtube+Last.fm+Jamster combined and delivered on a cellphone. Function wise it appears easy to use and the variety of content is solid; it’s a crowded market but certainly this is still room for a strong mobile focused player.

New York based Cellfish Media has $60million in funding from Humagade Group, Solidarity Fund QFL; and the Telecom Media Fund, with Lagardère maintaining part ownership. Cellfish Media did $120million in revenue last year from its existing mobile service offerings; this is no revenue-free duck in the water startup but a serious player with money and experience in the mobile marketplace.

  • Cool idea + domain name . Everytime you think everything cool is done / taken … there’s a new ‘fish’ out there.

  • What am I missing? Isn’t this a legal nightmare waiting to happen. Users uploading loads of copyrighted ringtones, etc.? Anyone weigh in on that?

  • Sharing music, videos, and art on cell phones….hmmm seems like a strategic partnership for us. I’ll have to look into it some more.

  • B
sorry, should have included that they are a fully licensed provider with copyright filtering tech and the provision of paid copyrighted material in place of illegally uploaded stuff, shouldn’t be any issues at all, in fact conversely I’d think some people may take issue with how strict and tight legally the service is, this certainly won’t be another YouTube.

  • that chick looks scary… Most men hated Golddigging chicks.
Ahhh. who cares….back to innovation works.

  • “B” is might be right?!

I hope Cellfish have legal copyrights from those Artists?? Plus Artists profiles looked fakes too! :0

  • Just added video, this should explain it some more.

  • are these the guys who signed q-tip to create mobile music?…blingtones..finally some more creative ideas for web 2.0.

  • I will try to test and use Sharing music, videos, and art on cell phones. and let you know…Armand Rousso

  • So, now I have to wait only one day to receive my IPHONE ;-)
And then I can marrie CELLFISH and my iphone

    Best regards
    schroedi

  • i use cellfish to promote my unique apparel and badges on http://www.nacodine.com . for every new item i release on my site i use cellfish.com to notify my subscribers and all that with a single click!
its a great tool for communication and advertising and its free !

  • Cellfish’s illegal content filter does not work. Most of the users just rename content so the filters can’t find it but other users easily can.

I would hate to be an investor because they are just waiting to be hit by a hurricane of lawsuits.

They have fat pockets too so they are like low hanging fruit for content owners.

They’d better pray the YouTube vs. Viacom suit goes to YouTube.

  • @ Roku - Yes, we’re the guys who created blingtones, it’s actually part of our site now on http://blingtones.cellfish.com/

@ the rest of the world: we only have legal content, it took us a lot of effort to achieve that, and believe me, it will remain so!

  • The video is horrible;

    - she talks descending

    - she moves her head too much …

    - The focus seems about ‘her’ and not the ‘product
    * Increase your product movie time, decrease her

    - Thanks - RB

  • Ouch Concrete Stain! The girl in the video is not an actress. It’s the Cellfish Editor (me). Some of our other videos have much more of the product on screen and much less of me. Sorry you didn’t like it though :( We can happily make more in different ways!

  • hey concrete stain, how come your not tripping on allen or #3 for spam, thats wack bro,

  • cellfish that is a cool site u have, we will be bringing you loads of urban content, http://www.abstract10.com
    hip-hop
    video
    art
    music

  • Cellfish is a pretty sweet site and has some nice content. I can’t wait to see what the site looks like in a few weeks when there are lots of active members and more content to share!

  • Timothy Tredwell - June 27th, 2007 at 1:09 pm PDT

This is horrible. The chick isnt too bad but the graphics used are disgustingly lacking. I also feel like this has been done before. At the same point, how many people can really be interested in such a website? I’ve never even heard of Cellfish before.

It’s like a cheap knock off of myspace and youtube.

@Nacodine - are you a sales rep over there?

  • At the moment it seems like a nice idea but it won’t be long till it becomes oblivious. Technology in this market moves at a fast enough rate where you will this technology soon deployed as a staple resource to meet user needs. And this service will be free among the network that provides it so Cellfish and anyone else trying to dive in will float for now but will sink in the long run, if it’s even that long. At the moment there are work-arounds for this technology their deploying to achieve the same effect but are right that the majority of users don’t know how or will not hassle with it.

Make that money fast cause every day the water rises in the technology world.

  • As long as there is an outlet to show content, there will be content providers, cellfish is going to make it if we have to supply them with content by ourselves, there are too many haters on here sometimes, CELLFISH keep Pushing! We need you!

  • Hello Techcrunch-ies,

Thanks to Duncan and Techcrunch for the write-up and thanks to all of you. Today we’re launching our official Cellfish blog where we look forward to discussing all things Cellfish.

Let’s take the party back to our place (http://blog.cellfish.com)

  • There is no party to take back to your place. Your company and others like you such as http://www.Myxertones.com should be sued to hell for building a business on widespread copyright infringement.

  • #25
http://www.abstract10.com, were going to have a library of clips on cellfish, all proprietary content, so stop thinking everything is all about hollywood copyright violations, man that model is over, STOP THINKING HOLLYWOOD IS GOING TO SUE ITS WAY OUT OF EVERYTHING, who needs hollywood with a cam on every cell phone. i wish i could have came to the party, next time !

  • PC To mobile share the content

    http://www.ad0.cn/netfetch

    For adkey!

  • @Timothy Tredwell not at all, im a graphic designer, and i work in france,

the site is not a cheap knock off of myspace and youtube, simply because cellfish is about mobile revolution more than web.

  • Mr Cartoon Lawyer (L. Hutz): Actually, no…user uploaded mp3s can’t be shared on the site. Cellfish makes money on the ringtones they sell, and all the major labels get their cut. And once the content is downloaded, they’re DRM-wrapped so they can’t be forwarded, and all is kosher. So what’s your deal? Do you not buy CDs and then throw them into iTunes, so you have the physical CD in your car and the mp3 on your laptop? Or do you bring your CD collection with you everywhere you go? :)

I approach the site from the perspective of a user, and it’s mostly about convenience. Suppose you have a device that has Bluetooth. But maybe the function that allows you transfer files has been disabled by the manufacturer or carrier. Sure, you could transfer it through the cable, but then you’d need the cable and appropriate drivers. Sure, you could transfer it via Micro- or Mini-SD, but then you’d need both the card and an adapter. I’ve gotten full songs (which I uploaded myself) on my Blackberry just by using the Cellfish site, and I’m thankful I’m able to, otherwise I’d be stuck with the default crap that RIM put on there. I already paid for the CD, why shouldn’t I be able to put it on my phone as opposed to an iPod?

  • I work for Cellfish, so I am really getting a kick out these replies… Seriously, I am a developer there and I just want to say that the gripe about copyrighted content is unfounded.

    - We have a moderation team that screens new content and aggressively removes copyrighted media, we also allow any user to flag a media for moderation if something slips through.
    - We take a strict stance on audio uploads, no uploaded audio is available to share to others, it is only available to you within your Private Locker (which, IIRC falls within the bounds of fair use).
    - Content downloaded to your phone is automatically forward locked (cannot be attached to an MMS or transfered via Bluetooth) assuming your handset supports the feature.
    - Premium downloads which cost credits are provided through licensing agreements with content providers.

We’re legit, really. We’re not out to rip anybody off. We just want to share stuff on our phones.

  • Timothy Tredwell - June 28th, 2007 at 1:12 pm PDT

Wow talk about feeding consumers lies. Your legit?

Why because your company has a bunch of money to over power smaller companies? Your company has been in the news for more negative points than possitive.

Not too long ago you were sited in the news for a racist ringtone. But some how your company is better than every other provider why?

Why pay money to your company to download ringtones when anyone including my mother could make them herself. Phones come with software now. This isn’t 1990.

Jason Jenkins - I hate to tell you, but your site is horrible and your content doesn’t even bring a word to mind to describe how horrible it is.

The final point of why this website is already behind would be the DRM. You want me to pay how much for a DRM’d song? Why not just buy from EMI off iTunes or direct and get a DRM free song through a reputable company. You call yourselves a revolution in the mobile industry yet theres no sign of anything that hasn’t been done already. Where’s the revolution? Still in your office?

Nacodine just because your from France doesn’t mean your not some sales rep for the company. (Cellfish Media (a spinoff company of Lagardere)) located where? In FRANCE!

    Suprise suprise.

    Another scam another day.

  • @ Timothy Tredwell u seem to be really upset with something or someone!
chill man, yeh i am in France and i work for a graphic design agency.

I don’t fell like turning around the point so if you dont like the product and your not convinced of it, stop wasting your time replying and trying to find the tiny thing to talk about!

In a world where in a year half of the global population would be equipped with mobile phones, I as an artist would use cellfish.com to reach out to all my customers.

I would use this technology (please give a site that offer the same service for free) to communicate, inform and interact with any one threw any device: pc, mobiles, blackberries, anything.

the revolution isn’t downloading a Tune or a picture to your mobile, the revolution is to allow you access it from anywhere any time no matter how many mobile devices you change!

Have you ever taught of changing you mobile device ? oh wait do you have one ?

ps: im a graphic designer and proud to be, but if u think i’m a sales Rep, u just gave me an idea, why not applying for that at cellfish.
    ciao

  • It’s a shame it won’t work with people’s iPhones, since it doesn’t work with Safari…

  • Disclaimer: I am a former employee of cellfish

    @Timothy Tredwell
If people are ready to pay premium taxes for ugly content, let them do it.

Their primary target are low-tech customers & teenagers. It worked for a while in Europe. Mobile content providers & carriers have been doing it for a while but now they are afraid because the business is not in such a good shape. They must find new ways to make money. cellfish.com is a “smart” move, but I am not convinced that the unfair bizness pratices commonly seen in the mobile market can translate successfuly on the internet. Only time will tell.

    @Mike
Most artist profiles look fake to me too, I don’t know.

    @Guillaume
Granted, media from Ringtones & other Lagardère brands are legal, nevertheless I am curious to know what was the deal you made with the artists; did it include “free on internet” ?

@Nacodine I catch you man, that’s not very fair what you are doing here. Maybe you should make your coming out and tell everybody what you are doing for a living… for real.

  • ok i will say the truth, i’m a graphic designer :)

  • Yeah I know of this company that every person that works there is a VP or Director. Can You guess where that is? Director of Doing Nothing, Director of Pencil Stacking, VP of Old Useless Content.

Not only does everyone receive that title, but you also get UNDERPAID, treated like garbage and on top of it all, lied to about how well things are going.

Word on the street is, the only members that did sign up, requested their money back. Could it be another scam?

As for Nacodine, its amusing that you have the blingtones in your portfolio. I wonder if you worked for Cellfish before!?!?!?!

By the way, your graphic design skills are horrible. Must be a European thing.

  • Better a Director of Pencil Stacking than an outrageously mediocre designer.

  • I think you confused me with another mad person.

  • @Unknown User
Sorry but you got it plain wrong. Some people get really well paid but maybe not on their merits ;-) There are skilled people working over there, but you won’t see their work on cellfish.com, they either left or are eager to find a better place.

A hint at those who want to know what this company is up to when it comes to bad and unethical business practices : try to investigate their mobile chat products… No wonder, people are asking for refunds. This should tell you a lot, and wait, behind the curtain, there is much more than that to make you wonder. To get an idea, just take a look at the work of Nacodine, the wanabe graphic designer.

    @Nacodine
I didn’t expect more coming from a cellfish employee :-)

  • If anyone is interested or likes the “fish” domain…
    I own Cellfishy.com, Cellfishymedia.com, cellpoultry.com, cellmeat.com and celldairy.com :o)
starting bid $10,000 Dollars Cash no personal checks :o)

People CALM DOWN!!!!!! and be fishy :o)

  • Hum.. it’s a cool web design but it’s not a zen user experience : panels are everywhere … tones of panels … i am lost in Hellfish panels, it’s not clear !
