Wiffiti’s Messaging Widget Is Fun
by Michael Arrington on June 20, 2007

We’ve been playing around with Wiffiti all afternoon. The service has been around for a while, but if you haven’t heard of it you may want to give it a look.

Anyone can post a message - just text “@crunch [message]” to 25622 and it will appear on the screen.

The real use for something like this is projecting the widget up on a big screen at a party, or as a permanent source of entertainment at a cafe or bar.

Spam away.

This is great. I believe the same thing can be done using twitter and some API work

Awsome! I wish to see this service running on some of these Time Square huge signs… ;-)

BTW, another way to express yourself to a random audience is: http://www.MomentaryExposure.com

How do they make money besides selling the screens?

This thing is neat.
I’m going to have to find a bar or niteclub that has something like this out so i can have a beer with all my friends and geek out at the same time

they could implement ads between the messages.

A great service for content providers who utilize gorilla marketing. Here at http://www.abstract10.com we will announce new content release dates through Wiffiti Screens.

ok,

now i think this thing could suck

too much spam

too many people sending too many messages

people are enthralled with looking at crap. Twitter, wiffitti, dopey abstract surrealists… i guess it needs to be catered to.

It would be nice to see a resurgence of useful and practical apps that are also entertaining and fun versus apps that have no redeeming value other than getting a few giggles and kicks. With that said, I’m all for free markets and making money, so if producing silly mindless stuff makes money, then I’m all for it. I wonder what new useless ideas are still not taken yet?

boo “-” (dash) breaks the text in the message

Once again this only works in the US so far! Will have to wait then when it works in my part of the world but otherwise looks good.

I keep trying to sign up but it won’t take my captcha code - looks cool though.

I made one which handles text, pxt and mobile videos sent to it. We used it at vodafones X-Air event. http://blog.xsive.co.nz/archives/195, if anyone wants it for a pub event let me know, I havent done anything with it for a while.

I just now figured something out.

Old and busted: Using “Hello World” to demonstrate an application works

New Hotness: Using “I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER?” to demonstrate that an application works

Captain Morgan is doing this as part of an ongoing mobile promotional tour. Locamoda, Wiffiti’s owner, has a case study about it on their website.
