lol so kickapps has no online now feature. Its got alot of cool things tho. I use it for myrott.com and its been good for me. And my members like it cause they got a place to go to were they can make friends, and comment there friends and watch videos, listen to music and upload media. So yeah i have no problem with kickapps.

I have asked over and over for my code and Ning will not hand it over. Yesterday i asked for acess to a small portion of my code, here was my request…
“I would like to request WebDav access to the /instances directory on my site, to facilitate installation of Ning applications created with the Ning Web Widget Framework by NingMods at http://www.ningmods.com. ”

Hi There!

Thanks for contacting us about requesting WebDav access for your network. Due to an increase in requests, along with the disproportionate amount of time and effort granting and supporting WebDav access requires from both our Engineering and Advocacy teams, we are closely evaluating who is approved. Additionally, WebDav will no longer include the ability to access the /instances folder. We want to make sure that our resources are being applied to the platform at large, ensuring that we are investing time and energy equally across the 1.3 million social networks on Ning.

So far we’ve built in the 3 most requested WebDav features and we will be looking to build in more. As access to the /instance folder is required to deploy this third-party feature I’ll hold off on adding your network to the list. If there’s something else you were hoping to accomplish with WebDav access please let me know.

Ning are crooks! They have removed more functionality than they have added and despise any 3rd party apps that provide needed functionality to our sites that they themselves cannot seem to figure out how to add. The rob you of every fee possible and then when you have finally had enough and want to leave to a new platform, they hold you and your messages hostage by denying you access to the very code that their terms of service say you own! believe me, I have been over there 4 months now and have been on the computer day and night for days trying to find a way to get my code and get out. These guys @ Ning are ripe for a class action lawsuit and their users echo this in Nings own forums. Its nuts over there! I have started the framework of a site tonight that I will persue in the future, hoping to bring attention to these crooks at ning and hopefully a class action lawsiut.The url is http://www.dontning.com

Kickapps is not all that good. Unlike Ning its extremely slow. It has no who is online now feature, which is very important on a social network site. Kickapp is no longer free to use and costs a rediculous $39.00 a month. For a very low amount of band width and storage.

Go with kick apps or ning. I use both and they do the job. I’ve done a subdomain maskin on kick apps and it works smooth, no issues with them at all.

Am yet to try that with ning but am in two minds weather I should or just settle for the small sum of $4 and upgrade.

Is this last sentence really true? We’ve requested the source code and extract of all our content but were told that this functionality does not currently exist, and that to extract our content we would have to select, copy, and save all of the content one by one (blogs, pictures, videos, etc.).

I could of easily had a engineer make a social network site for us. The issue was bandwidth needed to make it all work.

Kickapps = free bandwidth = we use.

I’ve been talking to the people at GroupMembersInternational.com. They have what the claim is an enterprise level hosted and managed platform. I get my own domain, my users get email addresses with my domain and all the normal features and more.

They are more expensive, but they are older guys and have business experience that i don’t have. I looked at Kickapps and Community Server and although inexpensive, i didn’t want ads and i didn’t want to manage the site.

I am doing this project for a large corporation and when i looked at staffing the project development and then hiring moderators and people to manage the site, it looked like a nightmare. Not only that, but they can have it up in a short time.

I think its also important to note that helping people focus on building a successful community is just as big or bigger than the laundry list of features & functions offered. The days of the ‘built it and they will come’ social network are numbered (if not already over) and in offering our platform in a way that really adds value is the real goal from out standpoint.

At Small World (http://www.smallworldlabs.com) working with people like the American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Hyperion/Oracle & The Dallas Morning News to build communities using our platform and making sure its inline with their goals for growing the community.

Starting with a strong platform is really just a first step.
