Desktop Tower Defense, the addictive and evil game that Jeremy Zawodny wrote about and which subsequently led to me losing several working days to “testing,” has been played 15 million times since launching in March. So says the creator, Paul Preece, to the WSJ today.

Preece, who’s started his own company to create more games, says that up to 4,000 people are playing at any one time.

Preece, whatever you create next, I hope I never hear about it.

Click here to play the game, and write off the rest of your day.

Though I’m not much of a gamer (too old, too slow), I have to admit that this one is truely addictive in the clinical sense of the word. Is there an insurance against the side fx? ;-)

Kdice is soooo much betta. I need human interaction. ;)

If it becomes the Google of Games, he can brand it and make an entire social network out of it.

It is difficult to predict what will capture the publics imagination - but when someone creates that one in a million lucky thing - it can really be potentially take on a life of its own.

This game is so addictive that it keeps me up all night :)

The value of these numbers is questionable because i’ve played it about 1-2 million times myself.

Level 82 in the top 100 challenge. Anyone better than that, noobs? (:?

yeah this is a great game / Would love to see - him do well with others.

Doesn’t anyone else see the problem with that screenshot? How does one have gold = points AND upgraded towers/more towers than the initial 80 gold? Techcrunch - how about a screenie from a real game instead of an obvious hacked version?

I want a POCKET PC version of the game !!!! mabye a flash 7 compatible?

This game certainly gets you in its clutches! By the way, anyone (newbies) interested in improving their skills might want to check out my screenshots of 10 high-scoring maps: http://www.smileycat.com/miaow/archives/000657.php

One of the best games I’ve played. I wasted 4 nights playing it last week until I beat the hard level. I can’t wait to play v1.5 which will come out this week!

I hate to criticize, but this game has been out longer and is way better: http://novelconcepts.co.uk/FlashElementTD/.

And did you happen to notice the similarities between the games? I wonder where the idea for Desktop Defense came from?

Well, Brian, the idea for Desktop Tower Defense actually came from FlashElement TD, mainly because it was made by THE SAME PERSON. Congratulations on your investigative skills, you should be the hero of the next CSI.

Tower Defense was originally created as a custom game for Blizzards Warcraft 3.
Thousands of people still play it on Blizzards Battle.Net each and every day. If you like this one and you have Warcraft 3 you should check out the custom games on Battle.Net because there are like a thousand variations of this game.

@Bart, I wouldn’t give credits to Warcraft III as the originator of Tower Defense custom maps because I remember playing them in Age of Empires II: The Conquerors way before they made their way into Warcraft III.

@A Voice, cool didn’t know that. Thanks for the info.
