oohhhh! I am so waiting for google's retaliation.. this might be the time where all ebay sellers are waiting for.. ebay is so going down if google kills them on their search results. no traffic?? no advertisers and buyers...

Ive been an ebay seller for quite sometime but have to bow down and give way to whatever they would throw at us (buyers).. If one day they decide to increase final value fees by 20% for the first $50, and 15% for $51-100, then we sellers have to suffer.

I really wanted to see an ebay competitor. Is "Gbay" on the beta stage already?? haha!

This eBay-Yahoo deal that everyone is speculating about is, from an insider's perspective, much more interesting and likely with Semel gone. This post explains how.

Ebay is not bad they are good,But their partner paypal is obsolutely dictating terma according to their whims&fancies. They really dont care for any problem to solve.Their Basic idea is sieze people's account and stop them from operating.I think Google check out will be best options for people doing business on line.

eBay should not be obliged to provide google checkout to it's users. It's so far out of their best interest to do so given they own PayPal.

They did the right thing. If there comes a time when they can see that they will be able to make more money by offering Google Checkout (ie, if their users start leaving because they don't offer GC) then no doubt they will add support for it. Their remit, no doubt, is to make as much money as possible.

eBay spent a fortune buying PayPal and has every right to deny Google Checkout as a payment vehicle. The only way that is a bad move is if buyers get ticked and auction volume slows. That is just not going to happen. Google Checkout is a disaster in many ways. On of the biggest is the complaint by merchants that customers are wisked away from their site to make the payment on the Google site. That is a kiss of death in this space. Frankly, I don't like either model. Registration is a pain and I don't like the idea of warehousing my credit card info, don't like pins and extra passwords. So....who cares? Not me.

So many of you seem to think it would be good to have another large auction site. Yahoo just announced that they are closing their auction site. So if they can't keep an auction site viable who can? Not Google either. The problem is you have to have plenty of stuff to buy for the buyers, and at the same time have lots of buyers to keep the prices high enough for sellers. There is a reason that their is only one major auction site in the United States. I believe the only way you could launch another auction site in the United States is by offering all of the products yourself. Meaning a company launches a site like newauctions.com, and sells all of the items direct. This way they could control the market. How many products their are versus how many buyers they have.

There is a great book called "New Rules for the New Economy" The book explains that with social networks (myspace), and online economies that having a monopoly is actually a good thing. Rather then have 15 accounts at a ton of different social networks to find different friends one account for all your friends is better. The same argument can be made for ebay. Rather then having 15 different large auction sites selling random items the sellers actually do better when all the buyers are coming to one place, and the buyers benefit when the sellers sell in the same place. It's just more efficient.

Kudos to eBay!

From my own experience, there are some half-baked MBA's and some half-baked Ph.D's at Google, but I'd say most are pretty decent.

Plain and simple: you should treat your most profitable customers well, period; not doing so shows poor judgement. Also, it shows in a large way Google's philosophy when it comes to their customers -- clearly, Google is not a customer-obsessed company.

I've worked at several tech companies, including Amazon -- previously and eBay -- currently; while eBay is not perfect, I can honestly say that eBay is absolutely concerned and cares about the customer and the community and actively strives to make the member experience better. I love working at eBay.

As far as removing eBay from the Google SERP's, I'd consider that move "evil" insofar as Google defines it, since eBay isn't violating any policies. To just remove a site from the Google index by fiat would be evil and goes against the notion of indexing the world's information and making it searchable.

To state the obvious: while I am employed at eBay, I definitely do not speak for eBay. I am at the bottomest of the eBay totem pole, so I definitely speak for myself only and I didn't get a dime to write this comment.

I'm with eBay on this one. Google is really starting to annoy me. I know some people there and they are arrogant SOBs (reminds me of some other companies pre-2001)...

Hi Tim!

But if they are eBay's partner then why weren't they allowed in for some floor space? Wasn't it eBay that treated Google like competition first? And I would agree that they are competitors more than partners since eBay owns PayPal.

Once Google is left on the outside, looking in, I don't see why they can't do like others have in the past. I guess I just don't see it as being so 'evil' as some said very early on in the comments.

Loretta (#98),

You ask: "BUT, what Google did wasn’t any different. The precedent was established long before this. Why should Google get the grief?"

The difference here is that Google is considered eBay's partner / eBay is Google's biggest customer. If Google wants to act like a competitor then why should eBay give them any business? Makes total business sense. Bold move on eBay's part... and Google was too arrogant or stupid to anticipate it.

@Randy: eBay's CEO is Meg Whitman. And yes, there are tons of employees at eBay who have a lot of heart and do their best to keep the site up and running. And I'd say most European employees look very handsome. ;-)
Don't dispair, everything will get better!
