Google Integrates Powerpoint Viewer Into Gmail
by Duncan Riley on June 12, 2007

Google has started the roll out its presentation platform with the integration of a slideshow viewing feature in Gmail.

The slideshow viewer shows Powerpoint presentations within the browser and is accessed via a “view as slideshow” option next to attached ppt files.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt formally announced in April that Google was developing an online presentation creation tool to compete directly with Microsoft. The new presentation viewer is the first released feature of the fuller Powerpoint like package.

ppt files are viewed via following the text link

navigation via backwards/ forwards button directly above the presentation, or via direct links to each page on the right

I wait for Google to release the entire online tool for developing presentations. This will be the future of the office suites, Microsoft has to move in the same direction.

That is one ugly-ass Powerpoint slide you have as an example there.

There is a rebellion underway in academia, with the major science journals Nature and Science having withdrawn support for Microsoft products and students and staff alike hoping to persuade their institution to abandon M$ too

I have tested it , its nice and flash based.

I always wanted this. Ahh finally it has come.

While it seems to be a bit simple and crude but one cannot help to like the price. If over time Google works on integrating this with its recently purchased Marratech web conferencing product, it could spell trouble for the low end web & audio conferencing companies.

I have tested it with a ppt, didn’t work - conversion failed - Document is unreadable and possibly corrupted ! But, it was not corrupted to view it as an HTML. BTW, it does not recognized Office 2007 - pptx format.

Web based is the future of Office Work. No doubt about it.

The question is: will it be closed or open source?

There are some OpenSource alternatives on the way already. Check out Zimbra, or the newest OpenGoo.

Missed the links for the Open Source Web Offices:

Hi Mike,
I use the MS Office all the time and MS. ppt also. I agree with Eric that their ppt will be competing directly with MS.ppt, but IMHO it still has a looonngg journey ahead.

The feature doesn’t support ODP (Open Document Format Presentation).

- Google has

docs
Spreedsheet
now powerPoint
Gmail
Search
Desktop

- I would like to see Google / team with OpenOffice/ to make a GoogOffice.

Cool.
Less Micro*** more fun.

Ugly, just like the rest of Google.

Why is everyone here obsessed with HTML based Office apps. Its just not a reality for real productivity. Go use MS Office (or OpenOffice if you’re *that* resistent to Microsoft and like an ugly UI) and stop sucking on Googles Kool Aid.

This is soon going to be a slideshare.net killer! Damn you Google

“BTW, it does not recognized Office 2007 - pptx format.”

Are you a Microsoft employee, or simply stupid?

Stef - Must be simply stupid -
My stupid thought is that if you have the audacity to offer ppt support - it’s maybe - maybe because you want to displace users from their desktop platform to your web platform - therefore - if that’s your plan - you should cover and ensure that users will have all the basic feature set - much easier to have users migrate to your new offering … nope ? but - that’s only a my humble point of view - if it’s stupid for you - that’s your problem!

Stef,
Pptx (and docx, and xlsx) are all important formats. In a few months (give it 6-12), most corporations will have Office 2007 installed and those files will be much more of a reality than they are today. Actually, I get Office 2007 files in my email once a week at this point.

Its not stupid to want it to “just work”. It is stupid for Google to ignore a format that is going to become widespread. Most users will just think Google’s implementation is broken.

Andre - I guess we are two in the stupid club - anyone wants a membership card!

Another interesting development, apparently GMail is to be the email standard for academia, at least for some centers, including Trinity College Dublin

I agree that pptx format support is required because as Andre said that soon office 2007 would be used by majority of the users and for Google to ignore that seems puzzling or is there something more to the format!

Recently I received a PowerPoint slideshow in flash format from my friend.
If can be easily viewed through the IE.My friend told me he conveted the PowerPoint to flash by FlashPoint.A powerPoint to Flash Converter.
I have tried that,AMAZING!This is particular useful when the PowerPoint is in large file size and can not be emailed as an attachment due to the quota limit. As you know, flash movie features in small file size,so it is very helpful for sharing presentaion with friends at any time.

Hope this powerful PowerPoint to Flash converter may help you in a small way.
Here is the website of the product.

Good news!
I have tried it and found that GMail converts every slide of a Powerpoint presentation to a Flash (swf) file – if you manually advance the entire PPT slideshow using the arrows, all the slides will become available as Flash files in your browser’s temp folder.

But for accurate conversion, a desktop application is a still better choice.

Yes, it is much better than just viewing it in HTML mode. At least now I can see the images and stuff, and the slides retain their formatting. It’s definitely a good start.
