Yes, it is much better than just viewing it in HTML mode. At least now I can see the images and stuff, and the slides retain their formatting. It’s definitely a good start.

Good news!
I have tried it and found that GMail converts every slide of a Powerpoint presentation to a Flash (swf) file – if you manually advance the entire PPT slideshow using the arrows, all the slides will become available as Flash files in your browser’s temp folder.

But for accurate conversion, a desktop application is a still better choice.

Recently I received a PowerPoint slideshow in flash format from my friend.
If can be easily viewed through the IE.My friend told me he conveted the PowerPoint to flash by FlashPoint.A powerPoint to Flash Converter.
I have tried that,AMAZING!This is particular useful when the PowerPoint is in large file size and can not be emailed as an attachment due to the quota limit.As you know,flash movie features in small file size,so it is very helpful for sharing presentaion with friends at any time.

I agree that pptx format support is required because as Andre said that soon office 2007 would be used by majority of the users and for Google to ignore that seems puzzling or is there something more to the format!

Pptx (and docx, and xlsx) are all important formats. In a few months (give it 6-12), most corporations will have Office 2007 installed and those files will be much more of a reality than they are today. Actually, I get Office 2007 files in my email once a week at this point.

Its not stupid to want it to “just work”. It is stupid for Google to ignore a format that is going to become widespread. Most users will just think Google’s implementation is broken.

Stef – Must be simply stupid –
My stupid thought is that if you have the audacity to offer ppt support – it’s maybe – maybe because you want to displace users from their desktop platform to your web platform – therefore – if that’s your plan – you should cover and ensure that users will have all the basic feature set – much easier to have users migrate to your new offering … nope ? but – that’s only a my humble point of view – if it’s stupid for you – that’s your problem!

Ugly, just like the rest of Google.

Why is everyone here obsessed with HTML based Office apps. Its just not a reality for real productivity. Go use MS Office (or OpenOffice if you’re *that* resistent to Microsoft and like an ugly UI) and stop sucking on Googles Kool Aid.

I have tested it with a ppt, didn’t work – conversion failed – Document is unreadable and possibly corrupted ! But, it was not corrupted to view it as an HTML. BTW, it does not recognized Office 2007 – pptx format.
