Adobe Apollo Launches Beta, Now Called Adobe AIR

Adobe moved its new Apollo Platform forward this evening by releasing the beta version (the previous Apollo release was a developer preview). They’ve also renamed the platform to Adobe Integrated Runtime. They’re referring to it as “Adobe AIR” (meaning Adobe is in the name twice, but who’s counting).
The new version fully supports HTML and Ajax, meaning Apollo applications can be created without using any Flash at all. They are also releasing an extension to Dreamweaver web development software.
Adobe is also now saying that AIR will be fully launched by end of year. Our previous coverage of Adobe AIR is here.
The Adobe AIR site is here.

This is very cool. Apollo (sorry, AIR) Rocks!
BTW, I would love an Apollo (rrr, again, AIR) version of Pandora (the mini player).
Pandora, if your are listening, please….
Apollo was so much better as a name. I guess they interfered on someone’s trademark or something
I sense a new age coming in webdevelopment …3.0?
Adobe AIR?? Who are they kidding??
Why not name it Adobe FART ? Fu#c$@king Apollo RunTime
That’s sound better !
AIR = “Apple IPhone Runtime.”

Explains more.
it sure seems that they changed the name to re-invent the perception of the platform, how come MS is called silverlight and now Adobe is AIR?… i don`t think such a thing is a coincidence, neither the html and ajax support. this is a direct response to both Silverlight and the newly announced Javafx, and it shows Adobe is not feeling overconfident anymore.. which is good for everyone.
Light and Air.. i would would not be surprised if javafx is rebranded too..
Avatar, just wait for Zero, Lite, Wind and Free…
i used adobe reader just now!!
I can’t stand watch paris hilton goes to jail song. I love that youtube ending. I can’t stop laughing.
Scoble nailed it (beat me to it)!
I was talking with Chuck Freedman (http://www.chuckstar.com/blog) today and we were “theorizing” the exact same idea.
“Apple(Apple/Adobe) iPhone Runtime” - Scoble
I say he is dead on, and if Google is as big of player as Steve Job’s has been hinting at in every interview, we’re going to hear a lot more about this tomorrow morning at WWDC 07.
Apple + Google + Adobe = Great news for developers and a unified front against Microsoft.
Especially with 1080p video dropping into Flash Player 9 (”Silverfish can’t do that” - TP)
See Ted Patrick’s post (http://www.onflex.org/ted/2007/06/flash-player-9-update-3-beta-1.php & http://twitter.com/adobeted/statuses/99250292)
I will be writing a post on my blog outlining how Steve Job’s disclosed more at D conference than people really thought.
Apple on - Partners, Software, Post PC devices, Cloud services and Risk (present and future).
Lions, tigers and bears…oh my!
To install something separately from the application sucks, but what sucks even more is no Linux support. I’ll start looking at it once they support that platform.
@Mark: In future you will not have to bother wheter the runtime is installed or not. If not installed it will come as executable.
@Andrew S: Linux is something for early 2008 AFAIK.
- Alex,
ApolloHunter [will be rebranded to Airpollo. has both names in it :-)]
I just installed AIR, and the SDK to see what all the fuss was about, and I have to say, this is awesome!
I don’t feel like I have to learn anything…I can just dive right in to coding HTML/Javascript apps. Very exciting, as I’ve always wanted to develop my own desktop apps.
the new name is crap
and from the post, does that mean you have to use dreamweaver to get this running? that’s the Adobe tax i guess
I believe this will be standard new Flash release -
- Also Im thinking the name / was a trademark issue also ..
-RB
You dont need to use Dreamweaver at all for this - that’s just FUD. You can compile things via the free command line tools or you can download the free Aptana IDE (or eclipse plugin) and create/package HTML based AIR files in minutes.
This tech is surprisingly free from “adobe tax”. But even so, they have to eventually make money on this or there’s not a lot of incentive for them.
Seems to me that anything new and innovative in development would be welcome, and refreshing. Bill Gates or msft employees would be the only ones denouncing it, since they own the desktop. Apollo really brings a competitive contender to the .net world, where brainwashed msft developers and marketers think that Adobe is dead. Well, looks like they were wrong.
If you think this is not an early strategy to become a Microsoft style monopoly on INFORMATION then PAY ATTENTION. How many software companies would be so bold as to say their software, although wide spread, will be named “AIR”. It’s arrogant and absolutely obvious that they will come out with software tools for requiring you to purchase these tools to create apps that run on “AIR”. If you think AIR is FREE, you will choke to death. That download sucks and is not well thought out because soon, everyone is going to get blipd!
Adobe will have to do something pretty amazing to make me move away from Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. I once was a DreamWeaver fan, but I’ve left those days behind me.
Adobe AIR —> Adobe IR. No double Adobe, sounds cooler with more substance.
I suppose that AIR is meant to be a clever rearrangement of the acronym for Rich Interactive Applications (turning other RIAs on their head)!
If JavaFX is rebranded, then it will be one of the earthly elements too
Fire, Water, Wind, etc…
Java AquaLight, Java Flame, Java Breeze :o)
Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! pdzwaqlzpss
I still haven’t figured out why one would choose to build an AIR app over a native Windows(Win32 or .NET) or OS X app. I can only think of 2 reasons:
1. leverage the abundance of web developers. Web developers can just dive in and start writing desktop apps using the web skills.
2. write once run all
Both reasons are valid but (2) isn’t really that big of a deal as the guts of an usually stay the same cross platforms. Only the UI needs to be rewritten.
I imagine that a native app can take full advantage of the underlying OS and that’s a tremendous advantage.
What don’t I understand?
