by Duncan Riley on June 8, 2007

The hype continues to build for Apple’s iPhone. Will it deliver? Here’s my take on it:

Is this site going to be rebranded iPhoneCrunch?

Wow, it really looks nice, like most of Apple products. I think it will raise the standards on the smartphone market.

Mark
view the video then think about what you’ve said, or is it that taking the piss doesn’t translate?

@ Duncan,

Even though this is “taking the piss”, I’m still annoyed to have seen an iphone post almost every day for the past few days. Can’t you guys just leave it alone and back to normal stuff?

The iPhone will definitely have a huge impact in the cell phone industry.

So, if Apple knows it is going to sell out its first and likely second run of iPhone’s and everyone in the world knows the product launch date, heck, more than the number of phones will be lined up outside stores just to see a box leave the store, one question:

Why in the world would Apple advertise this on TV?

This has to either be a big ego-move by Apple or someone there doesn’t understand that PR has been more than enough and spending money on a national campaign is overkill.

i like the stained glass image with steve jobs. and the apple logo behind his head. and all the disciples (macinsider, thinkinsider, macworld…) around with their laptops, iPods and mouse.

ha ha nice choice of songs

Why the hell is every one “annoyed” ?

Great video- and I don’t really read any other blogs, so I’m glad I get the coverage here…

haha @ simon. Do it!

If only a phone manufacturer would include a thin slot on the phone that could store a Driver’s License and 1 Credit Card. This would allow many of us to leave our wallets at home and simply carry our phones. Now that would be ground breaking. I love the concept of the iPhone, but they could have really had me if they included an ID and Credit Card slot inside the phone. I hope Jobs is reading this.

Jay #5 - it’s simple - iphone talk gets inbounds which helps to move trust for one of the most popular keywords around today. While i am sure that is not the only reason, it sure is a good one! TC I am sure wants to own that keyword. And of course Michael loves it!

Duncan:

Keep the iPhone posts coming. It is making my assistant nervous because she has to get me one and the more hyped up the product gets, the bigger the challenge for her ;)

Ney … just kidding … but she still has to get me one.

@12: As I understand it credit cards’ magnetized strips can go can become damaged if they touch a cell phone for two long. Good point, though.

At any rate, the phone-like-a-wallet scenario sounds better addressed by third party case manufacturers.

There will always be douche bags who don’t like something and complain about it even though they can simply not read, watch, or listen to it. Change the web address, the channel, or station, and stop being an ass. It’s people like you that have made the FCC as sensitive as they are.

Longterm I think the iPhone will crash for 1 reason … inability to easily use one-handed. I always use my phone in the car, and can’t imagine trying to do everything with 2 hands while driving.

Should have used the Jeff Buckley version of that song…

I enjoyed the video. Really funny.

@Anita: Driving while using your phone? That ain’t allowed over here!

- Looking like a great product ;

- Honeslty, seems to be amazing - but so would the $600 cash in my pocket

- The video is mediocre; I suggest keeping to aggregating others’ funny things ; if I wanted a funny post I would ….

- well there isn’t really a funny place on the net….

(might just turn on Chappell show, Comedy central)

I saw the ad in a theater before previews. It looked way cool on a big screen.
depends on the quality of media files, I would consider it.

The hype is much more interesting than the product itself…

I just read on another technology blogging site that there is a contest you can enter on Heavy.com to win a free iPhone. All you have to do is register with Heavy.com (which is free and really easy). I just did it.

Y’all should do it too. What do you have to lose?
Here is the site–

Hey Duncan,

I really loved you guys but now I have even more respect for your taste in music. I am sure you know this but the song was first written and sang by Leonard Cohen. I admire the man.

sincerely,

rokham

Thats excellent! well done….

I think a post in the forums would better suit this type of weirdness.

Naturally the iPhone is a “plug & pray” device :-)

Nice post Duncan.

nice video
iphone is just another phone, albeit one that looks pretty. i am sure it’ll have uptake by style monkeys though.
what does it do that is actually new?

Can people sue you for blasphemy? - June 8th, 2007 at 8:24 am PDT

Well, is it legal to use in the name of Jesus and his iphone time machine on modern adveristment? no way…

Even If christians saw that adveristment they would truly get piss off. People are not suppose to disturb image of living dead or legendary artist or philosopher or son of G_d. King James Bible does not say Jesus use iphone time machine to save the world.

If Jesus saw magican Criss Angel on iphone. It would made the world fraud.
Techcrunch advertisment is misleading and setting the false religion.
It’s not even hype.

Hype would be December 17, 1903, Wright brothers launch kittyhawk.

ehhhh, a lot of hype, cool phone, long wait. Will I get it? Damn right.

Will need to be 3G if it is to be ahead of the pack in Europe.

Why SpaceShipOne isn't hype? - June 8th, 2007 at 8:32 am PDT

Wright brothers made plane work, and cost less to produce.

Even, modern SpaceShipOne cost more than $25 million dollars to make and won $ 25 million dollars back.

Does that make hype? No way. no way…

My thoughts were similar to those that #33 seems to have tried to express. But I think that the Apple-ites may be even more upset at your mockery of the Phone of the Prophecy.

wonder if they will rebrand it the Allah phone, etc when they ship worldwide :D

Michael,

Consider a poll of your readers who will absolutely buy one, come June 31. I’d be very curious how long a line I’m looking at here :)

Shouldn’t they put darwin’s CAVEMAN iphone instead of Jesus?

Note: Jesus isn’t darth vader or man of machine or iphone addict. You people are weck!

Great Video! Here is another funny view of the iPhone: http://www.viddler.com/explore/cdevroe/videos/179

Jesus was crucified.

Is that the kind of reception you expect from the iPhone?

Classic. Best thing I saw all day. Thanks.

This is bad. Using “Jesus” on advertising? This is really, really, really bad.

Jazzy, calm down. Get a since of humor. What MA did was classic, like post #43. Value that or don’t visit this site.

iphone is the keyword that is driving the ads now a days. so techcrunch just following the hype.

Might as well jump on the bandwagon and offer our news search link for the term ‘iphone’.

http://news.fisssh.com/fisssh.php?q=iphone

A ton of stuff is returned!!

I don’t see how comparing Steve Jobs to a Saint is remotely funny, or great…. This video must be loved from Apple gurus only. I guarantee this type of advertisement would never make it to a television set.

Please don’t waste space on my RSS feeds with this nonsense. This belongs on crunchgear.

This, cHanges…Everything.

I’m trying to release strictful behavior.

If you find that jesus and iphone ad funny. You would mock your grandmother’s grave and smash with slashhammer?

you people should respect the dead and not laugh at it.

nice. I lol’ed.

hallelujah!

There is some relevance here for iPhone coverage.

If the iPhone is truely the first *decent* internet smartphone, then it will have an impact on the businesses and audiences that TechCrunch focuses on. If its Safari browser is truely Safari, and it gives you decent ways to navigate pages (I’m not convinced by the commercials), then it could be the beginning of real mobile browsing and therefore mobile web 2.0. However, the limiting factor will be its network. I think ATT needs to get their act together here with a 3G network to meet everyone’s expectations.

Even if the iPhone itself is modestly successful, it will inspire innovation throughout the market and we’ll see better and better mobile web, and therefore more relevance to TechCrunch.

With that said, it would be nice for TechCrunch to look at this from that angle, Your angle.
