New Fan-Created iPhone Ad
by Michael Arrington on June 5, 2007

I told you so: the hype is just getting started.

What the– is that REAL? Sort of corny, but the ending gives a good laugh haha.

It’s not apple’s, “style” per say.

That was probably the dumest commercial I’ve EVER seen.

Surfing the Internet… Check. Checking email… Check. Google Maps, Photos, Movies, Music… Check.

Ahh, gihugic chassis and oily touchscreen, for a second there I thought I was looking at my $200 phone.

Let the 21st century begin in earnest.

Oh my… this is terrible! worst commercial evar.

One Word. Lame.

Would have to agree. Its just corny. Which normally isn’t apple’s style at all.

I loved the other commercials they put out. They were spot on but these…meh.

I’m pretty sure this is a fan-created ad.

Fake. Misleading title. And lame.

Id think that if it’s a real commercial Mike wouldn’t have had to link it from youtube and it should be available on the apple.com/iphone/ads/ page

I think that it’s a fan-made ad.

Corny or not … I am getting an iPhone on the 29th. My assistant is already on the case!!! Hurray for assistants!!!

“It’s showing a map of our current location”

GPS, anyone?

If the hype truly is just getting started, please just shoot me in the face immediately. Nothing against the iPhone, which actually seems quite awesome, but I haven’t even seen one of these ads on TV yet and I’m already sick of them because every web site even marginally tech-related has posted them.

sorry, i thought it was obvious that it was fan made, thus the comment about hype. I’ll clarify.

Wow so Apple is remaking the smart phone eh? I’m struggling to understand what it really does above my old Treo 650? Which can do all that and more…

I guess there was no shortage of excellent mp3 players before the ipod - so I presume the strategy here is to bring smart phone functionality to the masses in a simple intuitive way. If so then I totally buy that – 90% of smart phone users don’t use 1/10 of the functionality available, because it’s a pain.

If apple is going to make that super easy in the same way they did digital music with the ipod – then I fully understand.

What I don’t understand is why all the fan boys are calling it ‘revolutionary’ – I don’t see anything at all revolutionary. But neither was the ipod (with exception of small form factor hard drive capability) and that did pretty well…

@dunk - I would say an intuitive smart phone *is* revolutionary. Give your mom your Treo and let’s see her figure out how to get her pictures on it and set it as the phones background.. or how about attach them to an email and send them from the Treo.. Let’s see how you would do it on an iphone..

#1) Plug your phone into your computer ( iphone syncs your photos from iPhoto/iTunes to your phone )

#2) Go to “Photos” on your iPhone.

#3) Select the photo, and hit the soft button at the bottom left ( I’m just going by what Steve Jobs did at the keynote )

#4) Touch the email photo soft button.

#5) Select or type in email address and press send.

That’s why the iPod worked so well. It was simple. You plug it in, your music that you purchased through the very easy to use iTunes Store goes to your ipod. Plug in your headphones and off you go. There’s no learning curve. No geek knowledge required. Apple simplified everything on that phone. Giant in your face buttons while your on a call so you can mute them, make a three-way call, etc. A web browser that’s actually useable, ichat-like easy to read and keep track of SMS messages. I could go on and on.. Yes, you could do this on your Treo, but it wasn’t fast and easy. Nor did it look good while doing it.

Wow, slightly impressed there.

Come on everyone… Favorite movie combined + a phone I must have = GREATNESS. Of course, I guess this does label me as a scifi geek.

Josh Chaney…here is how you get a picture on your treo and set it as the background:

1)go to any computer: send the photo to the phone through email, sms, or sync

2)image pops up as new message on phone: click context menu button.

3)choose set as background

done..

@Arrington

Now that said, I’m totally blown away :P. They guy clearly knew what he was doing, especially with the light reflection on the iphone as well as mimicing the iphone interface (specifically calling mission control and the google maps moon bit)

did someone talked about iphone fetichism?

Cingular has crappy coverage on 280, we’re supposed to believe they have EDGE on the moon?

Very corny. I played the video thinking it was an official Apple ad. Boy, was I relieved when I realised that it’s fan-created.

I saw an ad on TechCrunch home page yesterday (I think)and when I clicked on it a video called Communic8 played but I cannot find it now. Any help?

That’s a really big handset.

Love it!

Fan videos are the best. Is this up on Atomfilms, or iFilm?

I loved it. As far as fan-made commercials go, that’s pretty damn good.

Hmm… Treo or iPhone. It’s so tough I can’t decide….

Whoa, that’s cool.

@Phillip:

See, I could create a similar list for the iPhone against the Treo. Who cares if it doesn’t have ‘true’ multi-tasking, OSX, Widgets or Core Animation? And I don’t know what Treo you’re using, but it certainly has a ’single-touch’ interface.

The question you have to ask is, is it right for my purposes? And for many it’ll be the Treo, with the ton of third-party apps and better business integration and support, and for others it’ll be the iPhone with it’s slick interface, and iPod features.

Get a grip - the iPhone is not the be all and end all of smart phones. The Treo or WM phones will not disappear just because the iPhone is here. In fact it isn’t even in Treo/Blackberry/WM territory until Apple gets serious on providing business integration. I’d be more worried if I were Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson etc.

I’m sorry but, multi-tasking applications is a huge deal.

If you’re downloading a huge web page on an iPhone, you can go check your email and do other things while it’s happening in the background. You can’t do that on a Treo.

That’s an enormous time saver. I think you would be the only person on the planet who does not find that to be useful.

[whoops: that should have read: "not single touch"]

The new Apple iPhone will be inadequate for my needs - but I’ll still take one - if someone gives me one to try out. I doubt if it will sell more than a few hundred - million, billion, whatever. Its screen appears too small for my serious internet surfing. And it won’t even brush my teeth - oh, wait a minute. It does vibrate, doesn’t it?
