Event of the Week: Steve Jobs & Bill Gates On Stage at D
by Michael Arrington on May 27, 2007

The highlight of the D conference in San Diego later this week will be a 75 minute session with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs on stage at the same time. No one is suggesting the two will be making any announcements - the topic is “where consumer technology has been, and where it is going.” But this will certainly be a session that a lot of people will want to watch. I’m hoping that they make a video of the talk widely available.

The last time Bill and Steve were on stage together was at MacWorld in 1997, when Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple and announced plans to broaden its software offerings for the Apple platform. Steve Jobs was there in person; Bill Gates participated via satellite. A video of that session is here.

Bonus Archive Material:

Steve Jobs on Microsoft
: “The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste…they don’t think of original ideas and they don’t bring much culture into their product…they make really third rate products.”

Bill Gates on Apple
: “To create a new standard, it takes something that’s not just a little bit different. It takes something that’s really new and really captures people’s imagination…and the Macintosh of all the machines I’ve ever seen is the only one that meets that standard.”

Steve Ballmer on the iPhone
: “It doesn’t appeal to business customers because it doesn’t have a keyboard.”

Wow, this will be awesome. Can’t wait! :D

This is going to be an interesting watch! :D
Cant wait to listen to Gates defenceson account of creativity in Microsoft, which had since long been an issue.
I agree with Ballmer though, iPhone is kind of dumb. :P

Should of called this one “Event of the Century”

or at least “Event of the Year”

:P

guess they’re pulling more thn each others legs :p

Jobs: Hello, I’m a Mac.
Gates: And I’m a PC.

Wouldnt be a bad thing to re-enact…

Very interesting sum of related video materials. Thanks, I did not watch them before.

would it be possible to watch this interview online ?

I hope so gregor, someone advise.

Event of the Year, for sure.

I was hoping for Linus Torvalds in there…

Also hoping they make this widely available.

I’ll be there and try and present it live.

Wow. Looking forward to see this face2face talk. Will it be broadcasted somewhere live or it will appear here?

Its the debate of the century :p

Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates, two mortal enemies will face each other again after a decade.

Its WAR! :p

I dont think it will be a debate at all!

- in fact Im sure there are preset rules / and it will set out in advance

- I think there is alot ; of professionalism between these 2

On purpose or no, the 1997 MacWorld event hilariously parallels Apple’s 1984 superbowl ad, with Bill “The Man” Gates looking down from a huge display at puny Jobs and the rest of the mere mortals in the audience.

If this was rigged on purpose by Jobs, it was masterful. More likely the conferencing gear was simply jacked into the stage projector.

I can not wait for tomorrow’s joust!
