Webjay Joins DeadPool, Yahoo Scores Hat Trick For May

Music playlist sharing site Webjay, acquired by Yahoo in January 2006, will be closing June 30 according to a message that has appeared on the site.
The announcement gives Yahoo a hat trick of closure announcements for May, Webjay joining Yahoo Photos and Yahoo Auctions in the TechCrunch DeadPool.
Founded by Lucas Gonze, Webjay allowed users to publish music playlists on the web. Media players such as WinAmp and Windows Media Player could then be given a list of songs to play from locally stored music or via web streaming.
No reasons have been given for the closure. Alexa traffic data for Webjay shows a gradual decline in traffic from a peak in early 2006.

Definitely something is cooking up within Yahoo… time to dig that out.
Internet Evangelist
the obvious question: what will be shut next by Yahoo?
Well something like that goes down, something else sprout up… like Skreemr.
Damn it… 2007 sucks.
There is no flying car, new mike tyson, new soda taste, new sauce, new ice cream, blade runner city, levitating TV screen, and freaking hoverboard. I can’t feel killerapp. I just can’t feel the hype.
To all founders and dickheads out there. Can you at least invent freaking killerapp for 2007?
“Killerapp”– You know spreadsheet for apple II, Grand Thief Auto, Super mario brothers, nintendo wii, etc… I’m sick of million dollar VC news. I hate reading million dollar funded companies that never show killerapp.
Here’s five reasons why you can’t create killerapp.
1.) Chasing VC money.
2.) Writing crappy business plan.
3.) Feeling young…Buy houses, partying, car, commit adultry
4.) Busy yelling your own employees.
5.) invent vaporware news. We invented Sealth mode!!! Oh shut up.
Show it!!! SHOW ME DAMN INNOVATION!!!
My guess is that Yahoo is going to use what they got from Webjay to update their music website. They have been testing out a new flash-based video player there, so maybe they want to update the music player to something that competes better with Pandora as well.
The slow, gradual deconstruction of Yahoo. They used to be so cool, now just a company in search of its mojo. If Google and Apple ever do merge, it’s game over. Prediction: That’s the last thing Jobs will do when he retires from Apple. Since there is nobody else that can run Apple, might as well leave it to the Google guys.
Another waste of a good startup. Its not just Yahoo - throw Webjay on the pile with dodgeball too. I think these 2.0 startups and their “feature” orientation and low selling prices reduce the committment that the acquiring organization feels to their successs.
Peanut butter casualty.
Isn’t this a question of acquiring some companies and then realizing that they don’t add much value and then the site is closed down. Also waiting to see what else will be shut down.
This is a fast moving market and yesterdays innovation is todays scrap. I don’ think that Yahoo see no future here mind, but I guess it’s part of their bigger plan to consolidate they company.
For those looking to move their playlist’s to another service myplaylist.biz would be happy to host you, and whats more you will be add Flickr pictures to your playlist’s with our embeddable Flash player.
WebJay were pioneers in the XSPF format and without Lucas Gonze there would have probably been no MyPlayList.biz so a big round of applause is emanating from our offices in the South of France to you Sir.
Looks like the end of the era of mad , half thought out acquisitions. Or is it?
Sad to hear. Really.
What is sad to hear?
Hey Michael Birch wannabe,
Looks like you are a serious hater. Probably because you are bum with nothing to look forward to but your own grave.
Stupid - this is a site about business and tech. If you got nothing constructive to say except hate, then go ahead drink your haterade and change the url on your browser to another website.
Stupid!
okay so you all bitch about pointless crap being bought and floated and overlapped by other pointless crap…well, here ya go, they’re putting a bullet in something. rejoice, this is the part of the cleanuup you all clamor for
but wait, there’s more! you also get the pearing knife!
come on kids, 99.999999999999% of the crap covered here is fringe even for web2 junkies, don’t get too involved spending time populating crap on these sites, they are all just waiting for an economic contraction to turn of the ol o2.
As far as I understood it back then, Yahoo mainly wanted to hire Gonze because of the XSPF playlist format he invented. That format is now implemented in the Yahoo! Music Engine, for example… I don’t think they every had great plans for Webjay itself, as a service.
Dear Where’s my fu*king Killerapp,
You are my hero. That is all.
@ Duncan Riley… the shutting down of yahoo auctions could be a indication of something to do with ebay… either a better partnership or a buyout, There seems to eb rumours flying around already.
I just started using this player called MXPLAY (really sweet btw) which is allowing a very easy import of all your Webjay tunes…..see their blog post here http://blog.mxplay.com/mxplay/.....rs_lo.html
