One of the blogs I read religiously is Richard MacManus’ ReadWriteWeb. It has been a source of quality anaylsis and thinking on the new web for years, and has been around far longer than TechCrunch. That’s why I’m very happy to see RWW launch a new blog called Last100, to be edited by veteran writer Steve O’Hear. O’Hear will continue to write his ZDnet blog on the social web while taking on this new role. He also co-produced a movie on silicon valley that we wrote about late last year.
Last100 looks to be at least a little bit similar to GigaOm’s NewTeeVee: it will cover new consumer products and services that are becoming more popular as broadband penetration rates increase. Welcome to the blogosphere, Last100.

See all

Haha, this is funny because ReadWriteWeb doesn’t only cover the topics TechCrunch does, it pretty much *is* TechCrunch. Check out their sidebar with all those TechCrunchy elements in it…. it’s like…hmm, where have I seen that before?!?!? Are you sure you guys don’t share the same bedroom?
And now Last100 looks awfully too much like Gigaom [and nothing like TC!]. Man, you sure you guys don’t sleep on the same bed periodically watching each other’s screens? I can imagine the placement: Mike - Richard - Om. One gets the scoop, others ‘quietly’ follow. Mike and Om look diligent, but Rich looks like that nosy kid who follows ‘with a little bit of this, and a little bit of that’ and makes his buck off the other two’s discoveries.
Would you write about Last100, if it was not launched by RWW ? This is what i hate at TechCrunch. When you write about this, you can very well write about my http://reviews.templora.com
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the mention. I’m not sure I’m a veteran quite yet, though I am getting on a bit
- Steve
I’d heard of “last mile” in telecom terms, but never last 100. In my case it is actually more like last 28 (or last 11 as the crow flies).
oh, and to #3 above, that’s life I guess, and your not in the club, try submitting your great gizmo to the TC20 !
“ReadWriteWeb doesn’t only cover the topics TechCrunch does, it pretty much *is* TechCrunch” says John. Or vice versa, says I.
Michael’s original post is very classy. It acknowledges that RWW “has been around for far longer than TechCrunch” and salutes RWW’s quality.
The site looks great, layout kind of similar to gigaom. I think the site will gets its own followers.
cool
That’s me…”classy”
Thanks Mike for the kind words!
As for John Cal, well of course both Mike and Om are inspirations. I like to think I’m a little bit diligent too tho
Congrats to Richard and Steve. All the best.

Interestingly, last100 shares the same cryptic smiley face that techcrunch has at the bottom left of the blog. last100 has it at the top left.
It’s like “The Net” and I often imagine that if I click it, I will gain top level access to top secret web 2.0 news.
