Wall Street 2.0
by Duncan Riley on May 8, 2007

gordongecko.pngGordon Gekko is back.

20th Century Fox has announced that it will be filming a sequel to 1987 cult classic Wall Street. The movie spawned lines that even today are quoted by stockbrokers and Investment Firms: lunch is for wimps and or course “Greed is Good”.

It’s sad they didn’t make the sequel in the late 90s. Gordon Gekko would have made a killing in Web 1.0 stocks. Fast forward a decade and the age of the IPO and inflated share price has passed, replaced in favor of the corporate buyout.

Reports state that in the movie, Gekko, having been released from jail, is now working in the hedge fund business.

Hedge funds do many things and not all of them are evil: hedge funds can be found in the background of funded companies throughout Web 2.0, but I couldn’t help but immediately think of Patent Trolling. Will Gordon Gekko buy a raft of patents, bringing his control over a range of Web 2.0 technologies to bare on a helpless Silicon Valley?

If Gordon Gekko in the Wall Street sequel was to focus on tech stocks and Valley startups, what could you see him doing aside from the obvious: abolishing free lunches and Segways at Google?

AWESOME! That movie is one of my favorites and it’s great to see they are making a sequel. Any ideas when the release date will be?

PS: It is Gordon Gekko not Gordon Gecko.

Would have been a much better movie if Gekko won in the end… :)

damn spell checkers, fixed and thanks, I should have noticed that, I must have watched the movie a hundred times over the last 20 years.

Timothy ;-)

He didn’t actually say “Greed is good.” That’s a myth. The actual quote is:

“The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works.”

I heard they were casting The Gieco Gecko

HAHAHA.. Look at that phone!

I am thinking big comeback - Donald Trump style - then an even bigger fall. I bet the .com’s play a role in this one too…even if it is a few years late.

Mousefinger, you are of course correct, but it’s usually remembered in the abbreviated form.

“Coffee is for closers” is better than any line out of Wall Street.

Hedge funds do good? Thats like saying Hitler was good because he got the trains to run on time. OK, don’t mean to compare hedge fund guys to Hitler but you get my point. Listen to the Jim Cramer interview up on YouTube.

Actually, Gordon probably wouldn’t be able to run a hedge fund because he wouldn’t be able to register as a RIA. Thats about the only regulation hedge funds have to submit to.

Gekko will arrange to perfectly time his carry trade moves with a microsecond variations in observed global time caused by reintroduction of GPS Selective Availability following an executive US presidential order. There will be a stampede to flee the US green back in favor of Lindens. For a brief moment, the market capitalization of the bourses on Second Life will exceed that of the NYSE and NASDAQ combined. Gekko will boldly blog his every move. Gecko’s avatar will Twitter about this.

That cell phone he’s holding is pretty nice.

Thanks to the monopolistic practices of US cell phone carriers, the cell phones we have today are barely, if at all, better than what Douglas is holding there.

Seriously, I find US cell phones to be utterly pathetic devices. The Apple iPhone is what I consider to be the first, actual cell phone in the United States.

The NYT and the link in your post indicates that the movie is to be called “Money Never Sleeps,” but when looking at imdb, it seems that this is what they named the making of the movie in 2000:

Strange.

such a great movie. upsets me that they’re going to try and build upon it this late in the game. a lot of people love that movie and will hate to see it get trashed by a crappy sequel, just because some vp wants to make a name for himself.

the only negative is that oliver stone is not going to direct the sequel.

Greed is good

I was hoping for a sequel to Falling Down. Now there’s a movie!

I just told my boyfriend about it ( I’m so excited!) and he said, “never seen or heard of the movie Wall Street”. WTF?!

hey awesome!

Why is this on TechCrunch? :-)

Get out of your bubble people… wall street doesnt care about puny Web 2.0. The industries they care about have so much more money in them, it’s not even close..

It’s probably eight years late for a tech/Web IPO theme, so I’m leaning toward current markets and issues. I can see Gekko concentrating on the energy and materials sectors, crushing altruistic green initiatives while grossly polluting the environment on his way to billions in windfall. Can’t wait for this film!

i agree with mike… except, i’d say:

1) uh… wtf? why is this on TC?
2) nevermind, this is AWEsome!

keep it up duncan ;)

Wait a second, there’s girls posting on TechCrunch?!?!!? (Molly #19) ‘So you’re tellin me there’s a chance!!!’

I’m going to have to hold off on my candor from now on.

Kevin, I warned about scaring them away before Natalie left. Will we ever learn…. *sigh*

Hedge Funds would be the best place for a character like Gekko; they’re purely focussed on gain and have no consideration for the businesses behind the stocks. That said, I’m hoping that its not going to be a simple mish-mash of a classic 80’s film like Basic Instinct 2 was…

How about making Gekko involved in some pompous, overbearing mogul-style charity work? I’m not against charity, I just think it would be a great take.

Michael asked me the exact same thing in person as well as in a comment in the thread I just noticed. Your point 2 answers it in full :-)

Mike should've got that story. - May 9th, 2007 at 5:00 am PDT

Not bad…

I’ll be he’ll be a private equity partner

Healthcare.

It’s populist, and threatening us all, like Wall Street threatened the jobs of average Americans. Gordan could be the guy who stands up and says “We use money to determine who lives, and who dies. Thats how we decide things in America!” Or some such.

(So it goes.)

If you liked Wall Street, you should also check out Boiler Room.

I heard they are going to cast Richard Greico as Gordon Gekko, fresh off of his role in 21 Jump Street 20 year ago.

“the apple Iphone is what I consider to be the first cell phoen in the us”

- So you’ve talked on it eh? held it? Dropped it? … oh wait - your an idiot”

- I hate sequels to great movies; it can never live up ..

If it doesn’t have Douglas in it, it’s gonna suck. I hate when they re-cast. And Wall Street was excellent…it’s going to be incredibly difficult to followup, especially without Oliver Stone.

Molly (#19), I think you should dump your boyfriend. I suggest that we watch the sequel together.

“Well now, considering you brought my mother into it…71.50″

Wasn’t “Boiler Room” really the sequel to Wall Street. All I can say is it better be great.

Nice… I really like that a sequel is planned, but I honestly can’t see it being as good as the first Wall Street. Maybe I’m just being a pessimist here, but I still do have some hope!

“Thank you for telling me what I already know.” My favorite film of all time! Charlie Sheen won’t appear in the sequel. What about Darryl Hannah, Sean Young, and James Spader not to mention the guy on Scrubs? Maybe a reformed Gekko will be the good guy this time?

Waiting eagerly for the movie to launch. Monkey Business is entertaining as a viewer rather than being in it? Isnt it :)
