The only thing that will really kill Joost is if they become too much like TV. Like many others who have posted comments here, I’ve got a computer hooked up to the LCD in Living Room. I killed cable because I don’t like being inundated with advertising (even more so, I don’t like my kids watching commercials). Video Podcasts, YouTube, AppleTV, a Wii, surfing, etc has filled the cable hole nicely, and Joost is a welcome addition.

TV’s downfall is the that the ads are what TV execs consider the content. The shows are filler. If that happens with Joost…10 minutes of content (ads) and 20 minutes of mindless filler (shows) for every half hour…it’ll be dead (to me, anyway).

I really dig the interface of Joost. It’s really a great concept. I have had both good and bad experiences with the actual video. I know that this will be one of the best players out there though, you can just feel it.

I’ve got ADSL2 in Sydney (though it only gets about 6MB speed for some reason). But I’ve found it choppy and almost unwatchable, even though I like the promise. I’m suspecting the distance is as much of a factor as anything else.

And they’re not out to compete with YouTube at all, they’re about providing one set of customers (media companies) with a truly secure and user friendly way to program online, so they can then provide another set of programmers (the viewers) with a compelling experience. They’re really not even in the same market as YouTube (Joost isn’t doing anything with user-generated programming that I know of), so neither of them really have to worry much about the other.

Well if Joost is going to offer Football Broadcasting (upcoming UEFA Champions League Final for example) I will gladly give up my TV set to my wife and her Korean Drama.

No problems over RoadRunner here in New York. I think the real value here would be for Joost to link-up with TiVo like Amazon did recently. Then, you can watch low quality over the net or DVD quality via TiVo. There’s probably more synergy here than I can think of. Heck, if they did that then you could cancel cable TV and just use Joost/TiVo. Roll your own Fall line-up!

If you can watch it on your TV, you will. If you are someplace where you can’t watch TV but you can watch Joost, you’ll watch it on Joost. If you are someplace where you can’t watch TV or Joost, maybe you’ll watch it with one of our platforms.

All in all, it seems to have pretty good quality on a 2-6MB cable connection (comcast), but sometimes it takes a long time to load. I have little issue once the show starts. Most of the controls are intuitive and (fairly) responsive. Just because it is a download now, doesn’t mean it won’t be a plugin in the future (does anyone with more technical knowledge know why it isn’t?).

They still need more programming though; comedycentral doesn’t have any of my favs, so I guess it is still the “motherload” for now (ugh!).

btw, if you want an invite you gotta leave some place to send it, ’cause it’s real easy.

I have also been a beta tester for quite a while and I find it hard to get excited. I go to vdc.com and watch “virtual digital cable” and it looks OK. But for sure if I just want to watch TV (and I am at home) then my Tivo is what I love.

But I think Joost is being smart. The speeds will improve, the connections to the TV will become more native, and Joost will have, in the mean time, locked in a large amount of content that will put them in the lead.

Of course, the other model is that eventually good infrastructure is available to everyone and through search and favorites you can create your own set of programs with no limitations and no need for the gatekeeper.

Joost boom when they roll out the hardware version. I would expect them keep working on the software beta for another 12 months and then box the software into a hardware device to plug in directly into the TV.

I live in the middle of nowhere. Until recently, the only television I could watch was limited to agricultural scenery and newscasts telling me that again nothing exciting happened today.

Over the last year the situation improved a lot with cable, which now offers channels like Euronews and Eurosport, but we are still lacking on the entertainment side of things.

More options are only welcome. If I have to use my laptop instead of the TV set, so be it.

Can I ask when we can expect to see some of the content from all these partners? Is it there already? I connect to Joost from Japan so I could believe licensing restrictions prevent us getting all the cool stuff but from what I’ve seen there are a lot of content producers ‘talking’ about putting their content on Joost and very few actually doing it.

Let’s be realistic here. How many people actually have a connection fast enough to support real time HD video? I’d say very few since even the current quality is choppy on many users.

I’d say that the quality is good enough now and I hope that it’ll start working more smoothly in the future.
