All software should be easy for newbies, while presenting advanced features for super geeks. Perhaps allowing super geeks to delete unnecessary or too primitive functions, if they prefer to hit Enter, for example.

I predict they will need to add a Submit button.

Vaspers, we’re going to work on some of the usability stuff, i don’t see us adding a submit button, since most people using firefox know how to use the search query box top right. But we will make the login function easier, and the prefs easier. But our initial thought was that most who get/use twitter are advanced computer users compared to the average population. But we will definitely be adding more stuff to the tool soon.

Vaspers, I completely disagree.

If you build software that monkeys can use, only monkeys will use it. I guess that does not pose a problem if your target audience consists mostly of monkeys, which could well be an assumption in this case.

It would be nice to have a filter to receive Twitters directed at you (@bomega) emailed to you. I regularly have to browse back in time to see those few questions or comments from people that I would otherwise miss. Any suggestions?

Okay, I love it, I really like this TwitBit utility. This means ppl can now twitter and tweet at work, and it won’t be so obvious. You can have your twitter right there, to the left in your browser window.

Now if I could have my GarageBand page as a utility sidebar to the right, then Virb across the bottom, and….

the browser window becomes a tiny hole of 2″ square.

In addition to the Website and Txt messaging, you can use a service like EmailTwitter to access Twitter via e-mail enabled mobile devices. It’s useful for avoiding SMS fees if your phone has a data plan.

Improve it by showing “characters available” as you type into the text entry box.

You should consider making the TwitBin window include all the Twitter features and more.

Notice how a link embed is shown as “link” rather than the tinyURL address.

I stupidly switched to Public in the Preferences, and now I can’t get back into Preferences fully, to change it to Friends, all I get is “Refresh every __ minutes. and SAVE PREFS.

For reading, I like this TwitBin thing…though it still is qwerky. For example, TwitBin doesn’t show the number of characters entered for example which is annoying. It is a nice start, but 1. ideally the ad really needs to go (or make it option with the default as being on) and 2. it needs a few tweaks to make it better.

I initially thought they were advertising their sibling companies at the bottom. If its a paid advertising ..thats clever. I like the subtleness.

Can you make it upfront about the ads on the bottom. I usually don’t mind unobtrusive ads. But this one was a put off. I didn’t expect a firefox plugin to have ads and I came to know only after I installed it. This was a big putoff for me. If you had been upfront about it on your website, I may not have taken it to the heart. In your website, you say the following

I wish you had made it clear about the ads in this area of your website. It was definitely a put off for me. I like your extension but I am going to stick with Twitterbar till Twitterbin makes it explicit in the website.

Sure thing, I’ll make sure to add a blurb about them. I figured they were fairly unobtrusive though. static tiny image, no flash, etc. right now we’ve given away all the ad space to friends of ours, so its not like we’ve made any $ off of it. but it will eventually start costing us money to run the service (as twitter costs obvious, inc. money). I appreciate your candor though.

Thanks. Actually, the ads were not a put off for me. Actually it is unobtrusive and I even liked the fact that people could monetize around twitter. I would have loved it if I had known about it before I installed. Thanks for your response.

I also don’t like the idea of links opening a new window or a new frame. Rather its better for a link to open in a new tab and this is one of the reasons why I started using a few years ago.

B) Wait to write about the 10th social network funded by XYZ Silicon Valley VC Firm that’s just raised a $300 MM fund and has to deploy it fast, real fast!

C) Wait for Paul Graham and the well intentioned but misguided geeks at Y-Combinator to throw out a stupidly named gadget that does absolutely nothing valuable.

You’re going to kill your userbase like this and all you’ll be left with are the people whose companies you feature which won’t be so bad because at the rate you’re featuring retarded companies, you’ll have a huge viewership. I second your suggestion as a feature recommendation. It should use the default firefox preference (set through firefox options or through Tabbrowser Plugin) in selecting the new window/new tab.

Frankly, I like that there are ads there. I do not see anything wrong with a service making money to reward the innovator and pay the server/development bills. I think, however, that there is something completely and fundamentally wrong when we start to expect that Web 2.0 companies *should not* be money-making organizations. That’s bubble-ish.

Michael: Could you set your blogging app so that people can’t post comments twice in a row (or simply fuse the comments when they do) ? This would stop duplicate posts *and* help attention-starved people find much-needed balance at once.

First, suggestions:
Could you make a scrolling version for the tool bar? It could have some drop down buttons from the right or left side that could give content space. Since tweets are short and viewed more than initiated, viewing a “stock-ticker like” feed would help. Ones different tweet feeds could be in different colorars. You can continue to have adds that scroll across as well. Dynamic resizing for the height/ font size would be a plus.

Also, are these adds “targeted” in any way? Seems like they could be, esp. with “pub” collaboration.

bdb: I did mean it. Look, we integrate a variety of tools into our daily habits (at the very least), and lifestyles/businesses (at best). If these things are to be solidly anchored, we have to trust that they can afford to remain active. If people go on thinking that ads, ancillary products, and paid memberships are evil, but that somehow these tools will perpetuate on hope and water (or at somebody else’s expense), they are deluding themselves. They have ads ? Good. I’ll trust an ad-supported product over a hope-supported one if I have a chance.

I understand that you prefer to use a service where you understand their revenue model, but that isn’t really consumer thinking. Beyond that, there are other ways they could monetize the service (sorry vaspers, that’s how it works); wikipedia-type discussions have been had before.

It has been said over and over, it is just an add-on, with little capital involved (Jay, they mentioned that for you buddy, don’t you see that?).

@Louis, I get that, and while I do agree to an extent, I don’t think anyone involved with twitter (and its’ long-tail) really knows for sure how best to monetize it, or even if it’s a financially viable operation in the long run. Just because their is a mechanism to provide revenue doesn’t mean it is effective. That’s my point, perhaps that is not the way to generate revenue effectively.
