Twitter Users are currently given two primary interfaces through which they can interact with the growingly popular service: by the Twitter website itself or through TXT messaging via mobile phone.
A number of companies have launched third party tools to enhance computer based Twitter interaction. Twitterrific has a strong fan base amongst Mac Users, Twitteroo a PC version of Twitterrific, and more recently Tweetbar bought the Twitter homepage into the Firefox sidebar.
A new Firefox Add-On from Infinimedia, TwitBin, takes these previous platforms to the next level with a custom inline application of Twitter that just works.
Sometimes it’s the simplest things, and TwitBin cuts right to the chase: you get your Twitter messages down the left hand side of your Firefox window, broken up by color. A text box is provided for the addition of your own Twitters: no post this button is provided, Infinimedia thought this one through and knew that most people understand the concept of hitting ENTER.
Advertising purists wont like one part of the plugin: a 180×50 px banner ad is present at the bottom of the add-on. It wasn’t flashing or offering me free iPods; it’s subtle, so I didn’t have any issues with it, but some might.
In the absence of any other competitors this add-on should be popular amongst the army of Twitter fans, and it’s something I’ll be using from now on.
The developers shared one additional tidbit with us that was worth highlighting: it took less than 2 weeks to develop and cost less than $1000.
Clever thinking and good code need not be the exclusive domain of the mega rich or the VC funded.

Thanks Duncan. I shall try it, but they have lowered usability for newbies by not having a Submit or Say It or whatever button.
All software should be easy for newbies, while presenting advanced features for super geeks. Perhaps allowing super geeks to delete unnecessary or too primitive functions, if they prefer to hit Enter, for example.
I predict they will need to add a Submit button.

Hey Duncan, Thanks for the mention and the positive review. Glad you like it
Vaspers, we’re going to work on some of the usability stuff, i don’t see us adding a submit button, since most people using firefox know how to use the search query box top right. But we will make the login function easier, and the prefs easier. But our initial thought was that most who get/use twitter are advanced computer users compared to the average population. But we will definitely be adding more stuff to the tool soon.
you can add twitbin on twitter by going to http://twitter.com/twitbin if you want to receive our updates.
Also, if you have any ideas for it, post them here, i’d love to hear how you all think we can improve this.
Thanks,
Brian
Duncan, one more thing, our company is InfiniMedia, not Infinity Media (http://www.infinimedia.com )
Vaspers, I completely disagree.
If you build software that monkeys can use, only monkeys will use it. I guess that does not pose a problem if your target audience consists mostly of monkeys, which could well be an assumption in this case.
It would be nice to have a filter to receive Twitters directed at you (@bomega) emailed to you. I regularly have to browse back in time to see those few questions or comments from people that I would otherwise miss. Any suggestions?
You might also want to try out Tweetr which is and Adobe Apollo Twitter client.
Okay, I love it, I really like this TwitBit utility. This means ppl can now twitter and tweet at work, and it won’t be so obvious. You can have your twitter right there, to the left in your browser window.
Now if I could have my GarageBand page as a utility sidebar to the right, then Virb across the bottom, and….
the browser window becomes a tiny hole of 2″ square.
In addition to the Website and Txt messaging, you can use a service like EmailTwitter to access Twitter via e-mail enabled mobile devices. It’s useful for avoiding SMS fees if your phone has a data plan.
Improve it by showing “characters available” as you type into the text entry box.
Why can’t I “star” tweets in TwitBin?
You should consider making the TwitBin window include all the Twitter features and more.
Notice how a link embed is shown as “link” rather than the tinyURL address.
My bad. Your idea is probably to keep it simple. Just a simple display and data input window.
Listening to “Bush Warfare 2006″.

I stupidly switched to Public in the Preferences, and now I can’t get back into Preferences fully, to change it to Friends, all I get is “Refresh every __ minutes. and SAVE PREFS.
A free bug report for TwitBin.
Solved. Just clicked out the window, then reopened it to return to full Preferences screen.
Now going to add the Save Image As button gif for TwitBin to my Vaspers blog sidebar, up high on it, next to Twitter Public Timeline.
All Web 2.0 or 32.0 tools and services should have “spread the word” type clickable buttons code or at least images to Save As and make clickable.
That is really cool..twitter users are going to have a ball.
Simon W: what the hell is your problem? when did I ever flame you? shut your big freaky mouth.
Simon W: you are a webless troll, no URL for me to attack…coward loser!
Simon W: I have a newbie sitting here next to me, and he has tatoos on his face and is chomping on hot wings.
He’d like to meet you and see if you dare call him a “monkey” to his face.
You are two banana at best.
At what point will Ev monetize Twitter? The guy is clearly a genius but the businessman in me doesn’t like watching everyone but him make money with Twitter.
Ohh God, stop with this “monetize” talk. Mammonism. Does everything have to make a lot of money?
Ev will make money by selling it to someone who can “monetize” it, like is going on with YouTube.
Get new, dude.
Us super geeks of Psychedelic Trash Talkin’ Web 32.0, yes 32, are tired already of over-commercializing every damn thing.
What are you a VC?
I suppose the next thing will be trying to “monetize” glogs, computelepathy, dream record/playback systems, invisibility pills, and the InterPlaNet, NASA interplanetary sporadic-connectivity internet.
Adblock blocks the ad in TwitBin just so people know.
I still prefer Twitterbar for posting. Found here:
http://spatialviews.com/twitterbar/
For reading, I like this TwitBin thing…though it still is qwerky. For example, TwitBin doesn’t show the number of characters entered for example which is annoying. It is a nice start, but 1. ideally the ad really needs to go (or make it option with the default as being on) and 2. it needs a few tweaks to make it better.
I initially thought they were advertising their sibling companies at the bottom. If its a paid advertising ..thats clever. I like the subtleness.

Brian,
Can you make it upfront about the ads on the bottom. I usually don’t mind unobtrusive ads. But this one was a put off. I didn’t expect a firefox plugin to have ads and I came to know only after I installed it. This was a big putoff for me. If you had been upfront about it on your website, I may not have taken it to the heart. In your website, you say the following
I wish you had made it clear about the ads in this area of your website. It was definitely a put off for me. I like your extension but I am going to stick with Twitterbar till Twitterbin makes it explicit in the website.
Vaspers,
I’m not trolling, I just fundamentally disagree with the lowest-common-denominator approach when building user interfaces. I could talk more about that (and how it relates to monkeys), but not here… that would be getting too offtopic.
-Sw.
Krish,
Sure thing, I’ll make sure to add a blurb about them. I figured they were fairly unobtrusive though. static tiny image, no flash, etc. right now we’ve given away all the ad space to friends of ours, so its not like we’ve made any $ off of it. but it will eventually start costing us money to run the service (as twitter costs obvious, inc. money). I appreciate your candor though.
thanks, Brian
Oh, another problem with this. Any link opens an entirely new window…make links open in a new tab (or better yet, follow the setting in Firefox…).
Brian,
Thanks. Actually, the ads were not a put off for me. Actually it is unobtrusive and I even liked the fact that people could monetize around twitter. I would have loved it if I had known about it before I installed. Thanks for your response.
I also don’t like the idea of links opening a new window or a new frame. Rather its better for a link to open in a new tab and this is one of the reasons why I started using a few years ago.
Brian,
You guys simply rock. I am going to recommend Twitbin to everyone.
Okay I’m calling it. TechCrunch has officially gone in the shitter. The absolute number of crappy, worthless products being featured on this blog means that you guys have run out of valuable things to write about.
All TechCrunch does is:
A) Replicate major tech news from other sources or wait for Om to announce something interesting
B) Wait to write about the 10th social network funded by XYZ Silicon Valley VC Firm that’s just raised a $300 MM fund and has to deploy it fast, real fast!
C) Wait for Paul Graham and the well intentioned but misguided geeks at Y-Combinator to throw out a stupidly named gadget that does absolutely nothing valuable.
Great work TechCrunch. You’re going to kill your userbase like this and all you’ll be left with are the people whose companies you feature which won’t be so bad because at the rate you’re featuring retarded companies, you’ll have a huge viewership. The only problem is most of them have no revenue stream, no method in which to monetize, and won’t have any money to buy any of the products marketed by your advertisers. Brilliant!
Wes,
I second your suggestion as a feature recommendation. It should use the default firefox preference (set through firefox options or through Tabbrowser Plugin) in selecting the new window/new tab.
Frankly, I like that there are ads there. I do not see anything wrong with a service making money to reward the innovator and pay the server/development bills. I think, however, that there is something completely and fundamentally wrong when we start to expect that Web 2.0 companies *should not* be money-making organizations. That’s bubble-ish.
Michael: Could you set your blogging app so that people can’t post comments twice in a row (or simply fuse the comments when they do) ? This would stop duplicate posts *and* help attention-starved people find much-needed balance at once.
Thanks for TwitBin! It’s really good add-on.
Less than 2 weeks to develop : too long
Less than $1000: too expensive.
First, suggestions:
Could you make a scrolling version for the tool bar? It could have some drop down buttons from the right or left side that could give content space. Since tweets are short and viewed more than initiated, viewing a “stock-ticker like” feed would help. Ones different tweet feeds could be in different colorars. You can continue to have adds that scroll across as well. Dynamic resizing for the height/ font size would be a plus.
Also, are these adds “targeted” in any way? Seems like they could be, esp. with “pub” collaboration.
Now, reality…
@Vaspers, I almost thought this was your twitter page. Are you on meds? Or is it this twitter thing doing that to your mind?
I can see value in twitter, but it is always funny to see the people involved so consumed with letting others know what their up to…lol
@Krish, “I didn’t expect a firefox plugin to have ads and I came to know only after I installed it. This was a big putoff for me.”
Oh my god, I never saw adverts before! Get over yourself Krish. I really like how you kiss @ss after there is some response. Is this some attention need?
@ Brian B., You are truly patient, congrats. maybe one day, I can…
@Simon
Well, looky here, they removed one or more of your posts that sounded like they might have had some great “pyrotechnics”. Too bad, I missed out. Whaddya say?
@Jay, “TechCrunch has officially gone in the shitter. ”
Love it jay, truly look forward to your cynical commentary. Well written, and somewhat logical, even if I agree only 40% of the time
@Louis, “Frankly, I like that there are ads there.”
Not sure what to say to that, but I’m sure it is not as a consumer that you say that. Maybe you didn’t mean it?
bdb: I did mean it. Look, we integrate a variety of tools into our daily habits (at the very least), and lifestyles/businesses (at best). If these things are to be solidly anchored, we have to trust that they can afford to remain active. If people go on thinking that ads, ancillary products, and paid memberships are evil, but that somehow these tools will perpetuate on hope and water (or at somebody else’s expense), they are deluding themselves. They have ads ? Good. I’ll trust an ad-supported product over a hope-supported one if I have a chance.
I understand that you prefer to use a service where you understand their revenue model, but that isn’t really consumer thinking. Beyond that, there are other ways they could monetize the service (sorry vaspers, that’s how it works); wikipedia-type discussions have been had before.
It has been said over and over, it is just an add-on, with little capital involved (Jay, they mentioned that for you buddy, don’t you see that?).
Simon W: we is cool then. But don’t let it get around that vaspers wimped out. Thanks. Peace.
bdb: Well, I’m a consumer, and that’s how I think ! If this bubble bursts, 9/10th of all the web apps, toolbars, and other gizoms I like to use will go down the drain. That’s what happened after the 1.0 crash. I’d rather use a product that can stay afloat no matter what the markets will do.
@ “vaspers at the FLAMEgrate”
please stop, my stomach hurts
Hey “Jay (Living in FirstLife)”!
Bite me, loser!
@ Jay (living in First Life): sorry you are so obsessed with your twerpy little freaking “monetizing”. Tired of eating out of dumpsters?
Dude, you serve no purpose. You inject poorly thought-out brain farts in other people’s considered discussions; your ideas and opinions are moronic; your grammar confirms that. At the end of the day, no one here will end up thinking that they should read what you post any more, or that they should visit your blog. We all see trash twice a week when the smelly truck comes, and none of us care for more. There is more than enough noise in this world. If you cannot improve on a discussion, please stay silent.
(Good clever reparties would include “fuck off”, “bite me”, or any other incomplete or cliched sentence; go ahead, see if I care.)
@Louis, I get that, and while I do agree to an extent, I don’t think anyone involved with twitter (and its’ long-tail) really knows for sure how best to monetize it, or even if it’s a financially viable operation in the long run. Just because their is a mechanism to provide revenue doesn’t mean it is effective. That’s my point, perhaps that is not the way to generate revenue effectively.
@vaspers, is that Oxycodone? I happen to like jay and MA; it will be interesting to see if MA ever responds directly to him. Jay seems to be trying to become the “anti-TC”, though his “stance” is clear. Jay doesn’t seem to understand that many times the strategy is guarded within startups (aka stealth-mode). Entertaining for all…
dude, you should chill out. I dont have a blog and I’m not jay.
bdb: Good point. Out of frank and open curiosity: what would you see here as a revenue-generating mechanism ?
yoyoma: what the derp have you ever created, besides a massive fart factory?
I was aiming my commentary at vaspers; can’t see how it’d apply to you.
bdb
Jay is as Web 2.0 as a donut. And his blog sucks. You want a piece of me? Come get it bitch boy #2.
Vaspers is Vapid:
