Hey, congratulation for this deal. It is not easy to make its way through the jungle of financial websites, although it brings new and original content.
I discovered stockpickr recently, as I run a popular website in France (www.boursematch.com) with some similar concept (traders run portfolios and visitors have acces to a wide range of statistics and trade history). We are currently trying to lauch our us version: www.tradermatch.com

Cheers

Jeez. Normally people get flamed for flagrantly shilling their sites on TechCrunch comments. But since this seems to be a finance 2.0 love fest, I suppose I'll chime in and mention ValueWiki. Think: Wikipedia for stocks.

Anyone who wants a link to their finance site can add it to the wiki. Just make sure your link is in a relevant and helpful place. Cheers.

(and congrat's once again to James)

James,

Congrats! and thank you for your kind words of interest and link to ptrades.com. We had a "stocks?" link over to you from Jun'06 until our recent site redesign launched last month, and now noticing it's gone i'll restore it.

How will we handle expirations? .. Correctly! :-) But you are right that this is both a challenge and an opportunity for us. Instead of threatening delivery of a metric ton of corn to your front lawn, we'll just float an email your way saying we did so, suggesting you pay attention to your positions. [For those of you looking at the site after a week or so: what expiration problems?]

More seriously, we currently have shortcut trades for copying another person's trade, for closing a position, and for adding/reducing positions. We'll add ones for "roll-over" and advanced matrix positions as we grow. While these seem like no-brainers, not even any real, commercial trading platform has them yet. Hey patent lawyers, any of you work for equity?

Why do some people continue to criticize sites for not having a revenue model that is in the open?

does it really bother you that other people are building something they and others might like? Does every site need to be subscription based?

Honestly, what does it matter if a vc decides to give a podcast directory or any other copycat site 5 mil? It isnt any skin off of your back.

People are going to continue to build things they think are valuable whether or not you think they are worthwhile, deserve funding, or are acquired.

Congrats to Stockpickr.

Interesting deal. I noted that the footer of Stockpickr states that the website was built by an outsourcing firm in India which also sells some sort of YouTube clone. Typically this would raise a red flag for me, but when you build a real business that actually generates profits (apparently), good things can happen even if the product looks less-than-compelling at first glance. Better to see a company like TheStreet.com buying something that might not be pretty but that makes money than to see another VC invest $5 million in something that looks pretty but that will never make any money.

Thanks for the kind comments. Stockpickr definitely quickly exceeded my initial expectations in terms of the traffic, the unique visitors, and the path to revenues and profitability. My main goal now is to keep building out new features and I hope to improve the user interface.

Whats funny is I used to make websites for a living back in the 90s but maybe when I'm building my own site I get a little color blind. I don't know. That said, its a site unlike any other so its been hard to find a comparable site that I like that I could model the design after.

If anybody has any new features they would like to see, please let me know. Also, I'm going to check out ptrades as I'm curious how you guys handle the expirations on contracts, etc. RockYourStock looks like a lot of fun. I plan on linking to it from both Stockpickr and my daily blogwatch column at thestreet.com.

Hi James,

Congrats on the great news! I think people here that have negative comments are either:

a) jealous;
b) do not understand the value proposition of stockpickr (or of any finance website); or,
c) both.

The information on that site is invaluable to investors (and to Mr. Cramer) as he mentions it on his short video clips -- Cramer on Demand -- the look not so much so. With that said, are there workings of a better user interface in the near future? I'm a beginning trader; trading both with my own small account and my sister's roth IRA and I think the site's content is fantastic.

Many thanks,

Steve

I have been using the SteamStreet site as an early beta tester and it is so far pretty amazing. I have been so disappointed with the other stock tracking sites, that finding this site was exciting. It lets me know how I am doing as an investor against the market. The information is clear and it gives you all you want to know, without all the other junk. I love the sharing aspect because you are able to share only what you want. You don't have to share your full portfolio if you don't want to. Anyway, take a look at SteamStreet and sign up for the beta, my guess is that you won't be disappointed. And thanks Jon for creating SteamStreet, it has been just what I was looking for in a stock tracking site!! So keep up the good work!

Whew - so much vitriol from the haters on this one. Congrats to Josh - all the best with the next phase of your venture. I'm usually a pretty skeptical reviewer, but the comments that aquisitions like this get are really harsh. Is there perhaps some envy coloring some of them?

@jon - steamstreet looks nice. I threw my name into the beta sign up and will be looking forward to reviewing.

Wow, this is the networking chat room for finance 2.0 entrepreneurs!

Congratulations to James. It sounds like TheStreet is keeping you on an earnout, which is good news for StockPickr. I wonder if TheStreet will announce a similar deal for Howard Lindzon at WallStrip?

All in all, TheStreet.com seems to be making smart plays in building their brand.

George, I definitely will. Also, my goal in doing this is to continue to build and participate in this site. This site has been a passion of mine both from a web-perspective and an investment perspective, beginning years ago when I was trading for hedge funds based on the ideas in the site.

In other words, I'm remaining heavily involved and welcome all ideas and potential partnerships.

I'm very impressed that StockPickr has been bought out by theStreet.com so quickly. I hope they maintain the same high quality of service. I had been thinking about partnering my site, ValueInvestingNews, with StockPickr. Many of the members of my site also visit StockPickr.

James Altucher contacted me for feedback early on regarding the features of StockPickr. I enjoyed exchange ideas with him and I was always impressed at how fast they addressed suggestions and issued that I found with StockPickr. I feel like now that StockPickr is part of a large corporation, the window for me to partner with them has probably closed. It goes to show you that it is never too soon to act on an idea. Opportunities can disappear quickly. James, if you still have any clout with StockPickr, shoot me an email to discuss the idea I have.

Just to note: we were not "backed" or funded and were profitable almost immediately. Also, not sure what Alexa says or how they get their data but our pageviews and unique users have been going up considerably every month. Look at compete.com and multiple by 4.

In terms of interface, I hate to click. I like to have as much info available to people as possible. Maybe it could be better but who knows? We get a lot of pageviews per user so so far so good.

Madness. The site doesn't even work properly on Firefox 2.0. Oh let me guess, it's only designed for Safari users?

The site is ugly and confusing. Whatever the valuation, if it's over $1 MM, and I bet it is, it's a waste of cash. Their Alexa rank is average at best.

Message to engineers:
1. Design Web 2.0 site with Web 2.0 name - Shittr, Crappopedia, Pisster
2. Get site featured on TechCrunch, GigaOm, TechMeme, Digg
3. Wait for Echosphere crowd to roll in and roll out a week later
4. Sell to dumb larger company within 6 months
5. Laugh all the way to the bank about your Empreror's New Clothes scam

Seriously, Arrington, the joke is on you. Why don't you have any skepticism to anyone except PayPerPost? Why does every crappy company get a free pass?

Check out SteamStreet. We're closing in on late beta testing, and are looking for people to start using the site.

Sites like stockpickr focus on using the community to help pick stocks, while SteamStreet's focus is on the organization, tracking and sharing of actual user portfolios. As such, we provide more control in what you share and who you share it with. We also try to organize the site more efficiently than the other portfolio sites like Yahoo Finance's portfolio tracker, and we provide better information about performance (including portfolio charts, returns, etc.).

Please have a look and sign up to join the beta. Thanks!
