One of CrunchGear’s writers, Vince Veneziani, got together with a few friends to create SimpleWeather.com. It’s almost a web widget — go to the site and see the weather, no fuss, muss, or AJAXian fluff. It’s free, and apparently ad-free, and is currently up and running for the US with European and Canadian versions upcoming. Check it out.

Suggestion to make it more widely used… make a quick url perma-link such as http://www.simp...ather.com/95070 so that location weather can be easily linked to.
they should use Geoip to auto detect the zip code and skip one step.
Congrats to Vince.
Wow. That’s amazing news. I hadn’t seen weather online before. Do you think they’ll get bought by Google or go IPO?
He’s already sold it to the Weather Channel. He’s basically selling their XML feed back to them.
There are a few of these out there, I personally am a fan of http://4ca.st
Same basic principal, weather without the fluff. As the reader above commented, it takes advantage of simple url’s to get what you need fast: http://4ca.st/08873/
they must be using the affiliate program – weather on your wesbite or RSS feeds .

Cool idea. How are they going to make money with no ads?
Do they have a widget for Google Personalized page. It will be a neat tool to have.
Is this for real?
this isn’t bad, but a long url. I like http://4ca.st for it’s brevity and design.
http://4ca.st is sooo much better.
Slow news day in the Web 2.0 world apparently.
good one john – trade posts for weather reports and plugs! at least you will stay dry.
i mean this is downright awesome! of course weather.com offers hour-by-hour, maps, radar etc but you have ads.
this is certainly worth a techcrunch post! ooh-la-la-sassoon!
1. you will see wife’s hair fall on floor to bathroom
2. kids… crying, screaming & kick kids will not help you boost web 2.0 ideas
3. Having baby. you will not finish web 2.0
4. You will miss all the fun and memories.
5. You wife will drive you nuts. Do shopping — get food, tampods, etc…
6. you will hear your angry wife complaints.
7. 7.2% chance getting VC. Don’t expect to become jeff bezo. you are not that lucky.
8. You will have gray hair soon, aggressive looks, and older looks.
9. You will carry fat stomach and watch NASCAR, NBA, and cheer for beer.
10. When will you finish web 2.0 hype search engine?
Rule #1
Finish your web 2.0 first before you start getting marry.
weather channel says they have osx widget
http://www.weat...es/desktop.html
Um, not every web app has to be built to make money. Sometimes people just want to do build something because it’s interesting.
You know, this does solve a common problem. I like the 4ca.st site and will no longer be using my workaround, which is the wunderground.com printable page:
http://printer....ast?query=98033
wunderground.com information is much… What are you scientist?
There are so many weather widgets, websites and tools.
why?
why this one is better?
I agree with Rajiv on the need for a perma-link url. Its kinda nice having a simple website with no advertising (yet). Feels refreshing.
Yes Even I accept with Rajiv, Perma-link url will really save time & directly type simpleweather.com/22311 – get result. fonts are big & easy to change the metrics and easy breathing.
http://www.sugg...stusability.com
The formatting on 4ca.st gets screwed up in my Firefox, when I increase the font size. No such issues at SimpleWeather.com
My eyes are not as young as they used to be.
Why is this on TechCrunch? I give up!
Mike, it’s time to suspend John Biggs’ posting privileges to TechCrunch. Pimping some random CrunchGear’s writer’s completely unremarkable weather site is really gross and is a total disservice to your audience. We keep reading this site because we trust you not to waste our time!
Wow, congrats to the team for creating 1994-like website.
i don’t know what’s worse, the fact that this site is getting attention, the fact that there’s widgets/websites/etc that already do this better, or the fact that your boy Vince had to “team up” with other people to make it!
but all that aside, don’t let techcrunch commentor assholes crush your dreams. you go girl!
p.s. can someone turn on a dipshit filter on these comments so i don’t have to read horrible grammar and irrelevant crap about why i should not get “marry??”
investigating inside trading like pump and dump.

I guess CBS marketwatch got it.
Next time, mike be more more more powerful.
Damn it defaults to Fahrenheit. Tha is soooo 20th Century, soooo Republican.
#27 – he HAD to team up because everyone knows to be bought out you must have a partner! And someone had to make the puffy clouds
Man, what a joke TechCrunch has become. This is what this site will be now that Web2.0 is over.
How did they solve the technical issues? I heard they had 10 Stanford PhDs working full-time for over a year to implement this piece of software…
This is the last time I visit Techcrunch. Bye!
I really like the gradience. Well done.
If anyone wants to make a clone of this site, here you go:
http://nothingo...simple-weather/
You’ll need to add your own logo and CSS to make it all Web 2.0ish though.
A very useful tool because we never know what can happen.
A very nice day to all of you guys out there techCrunch fans what a blog.
See what tech can be seedubai.blogspot.com
Very nicely done…. Btw, you can force a permalink like this…..
http://www.simp...x.php?zip=73401
I like the fact its so much easier to change from degrees F to degrees C, unlike on http://4ca.st where it’s not so clear how to do that – that is if you can do it.
Now if only the weather was as simple as this
what’s the point of creating such website
(i.e. where is the money, fun or what)?
or you could use this…
http://www.schm...ey.com/weather/
@Wes
haha.. I agree because changing from F to C should be a priority over every other aspect.
If you like this, you might also want to check out ForecastAdvisor (http://www.forecastadvisor.com). It has an easy permalink, plus besides a simple weather forecast, it provides data on how accurate the different providers are for your city, based on data collected by ForecastWatch (http://www.forecastwatch.com).
For example, here is the URL for San Francisco:
http://www.fore...rancisco/94128/
wow. I wish them all the luck in the world of course but honestly… that’s completely f**king retarded.
That is all.
oh and I am forced to wonder if this wasn’t “built” by one of CrunchGear’s writers… would it be getting covered here? I’m betting not.
Now to go slap together a simple web page that displays a cut down RSS feed of yesterdays sports scores. It’s nothing you can’t get anywhere, but this one will be mine.
Even though the project isn’t underway yet I look forward to to getting covered here at TC when the build/beta/rollout phases are finished in about 15min.
What a bunch of pompous asswipes. You all are website snobs, and the fact that you took the time to comment on something you find so unremarkable tells me that you’ve got way too much free time on your hands. Go do something productive and FIND SOME NEW BUZZWORDS.
- Yeah this is a perk of being on staff here at TC –
– They get covered …
– This app is nothing special; that a 15 yr old couldn’t program.
-RB
ForecastAdvisor.com provides a simple forecast but also provides weather forecast accuracy statistics for each location (Accuweather, Weather Channel, etc.). You can also see how the forecast for a given date has changed over time.
@Rajiv, Ayal,Rajesh,etc.
ForecastAdvisor provides a nice permalink for each zipcode’s forecast.
@datter
My submission for ForecastAdvisor.com to TechCrunch back in late 2006 was ignored, even though it has had coverage in many newspapers around the country and in The Numbers Guy column in the Wall Street Journal Online. Also, my comment about my site with live links has been “awaiting moderation” since 5:45am PDT this morning (almost 10 hours). I think that might answer your question.
Hopefully because this comment doesn’t have live links, it won’t be awaiting moderation for over 10 hours. Check out ForecastAdvisor.com, it does what simpleweather does, only with more.
@datter
We could get together and create simplesports.com. You do all of the work and I’ll join in when it’s time to sell out to SI or something.
Why is everyone hating on this website? When I use weather.com or the such, I am inundated by Ads, useless info, text boxes, scroll bars, “click here to go Pro messages”, etc.
I like this site however I don’t see anyone making a dime off of it (except for the domain name registrar). Not exactly Web 2.0 but neither is http://word.sc which I love and used to make sure that “inundated” was used correctly.
Thanks for the tip on 4ca.st also.
