Conduit (Disclosure: They are a current TechCrunch sponsor), which has created a white label browser toolbar, released a new product tonight called myConduit. I’m writing about it because it’s a good solution to the problem of toolbar overload.
Instead of having each toolbar you’ve downloaded appear in the browser window, which takes up a lot of screen realestate, Conduit now lets users switch toolbars via a drop down menu. This only works for Conduit-powered toolbars, but it would be a nice browser feature in general in my opinion.
Given the advertising relationship I won’t go into more detail. But this is something that publishers might want to look into. Our Toolbar, linked in the navigation bar above, has been really useful particularly around getting event updates to attendees. The company now has 130,000 unique toolbars and 12 million toolbars installed (Major League Baseball has one for every team).

Yes, I saw your toolbar and created one for PokerDIY – it’s a great way to push events, league updates and poker alerts to my users. Conduit are doing a feature on PokerDIY and how the toolbar has increased user productivity with poker league management.
I’m a toolbar fan and dislike the amount of screen real-estate they take up, so Conduit sounds like a Good Thing.
As an aside, my home version of Flock has a little arrowed drop-down on the right-hand side that allows me to switch between my bookmarks folders – kind of like the switchable toolbar Conduit sounds like.
This dropdown bookmarks feature really useful, and I’d like Firefox to do this. Anyone know if
a) This is possible in Firefox, and
b) How to switch in back on in Flock if I kill it accidentally?
FYI, this has been a standard feature of Opera for a long while now. Opera allows any user to add any search box to their browser in just one click. Go to any page, right click (for PC’s) inside any search box, and select “create search”. Viola! You are done. No third party software needed. All searches are conveniently held in a drop down box, just as this feature is explained.
I still don’t know why Opera hasn’t gained much traction. It’s clean, it’s fast, and very robust. I’ll never use IE or memory-hog FF again.
Sorry. I should have included this pertinent link to the features page of Opera. http://www.oper...oducts/desktop/
Firefox does have the feature you are talking about but what the story is talking about is TOOLBARS like the Google toolbar but with all the user made conduit toolbars. Go to the site and you will under stand what the story is about. This is a great feature I have several installed and always have to right click check and un check the bar that I would like to use.

This is already available… Just go to View->Toolbar menu in IE for displaying toolbars selectively!.
Comments 3 + 7 – seems like you guys didn’t get it.
The toolbars available nowadays are not only about web search. Download the Techcrunch community toolbar and you can get all Techcruch feeds, links and gadgets straight from your toolbar, on your browser in real time all the time.
This new thing by conduit.com looks like a master toolbar that can detect and grab the skins and settings of any other toolbar within the conduit toolbars network, so instead of installing 4-5 toolbars (for each community), you can have the master toolbar installed and switch between toolbars/communities. However, the only way this can work for conduit.com, is if they have enough toolbars/communities in their network for the users to choose from.
As for me – having the Boston Red Sox + Techcrunch toolbars on one piece of browser real-estate is just perfect
.
What is their business model? I couldn’t figure it out from the website.
I get nervous using anything that’s “free” without knowing that their business model isn’t “turn the ads on in 6 months”.
I believe the business model is monetizing the search box. They signed an agreement with Google
Google ads have tons of laws.
How dow google ad works?
I’ve seen google banned top companies..
Nice. Advertise on TechCrunch and I won’t cover you in depth.
Mike, OK ok.. yeah I know… you’re between a rock and a hard place on this one
Have you looked at iyoype it offers this and much more with no downloads for Windows and Mac
From what I read from the ‘myConduit’ link, this thing is way cooler than you let on, MA! This new mechanism lets users subscribe to as many of 130,000 ‘community toolbars’ as they like, without having to sacrifice more browser space AND without having to download any except the first one. That’s awesome! On first glance, I see lots of cool sites out there have Conduit toolbars. (My favorite is still Techcrunch!)
