The price seems to be high, just in case of YouTube. It would be interesting to read a study which treats the $3.1 billion's justification. Definitely, the price reflects DoubleClick's future value.

Google wants to control all advertisements on internet. The majority of websites on web have adsense, a big google creation and something very bad for internet quality. I think google have a big problem or will have a big broblem (i think) in future because there are a lots of companies and institutes that are using systems to block adsense ads to their users and in future perhapes all home users will have this systems to protect their privacy.

Banner advertising has never been extremely effective, either for advertisers or for publishers. The growth in display advertising over the last 5 years is nothing compared to search/contextual advertising.

So Google is not buying DoubleClick to get a piece of that business. They did so in order to:
— change their creative
— reach new publishers
— broaden their data stream

(I expand on those reasons at my blog.)

This all about profiling and monetizing those profiles with relevant advertising. They know much more about each one of us than you think. The next obvious step for Google was display advertising, and if they can build a long-tail of display advertisers like they did with keyword/text advertisers, while leveraging their profiling data and auction bidding system, they can make a ton more money for themselves and publishers.

What Google's Purchase of DoubleClick Means to Publishers and Advertisers

Last Friday's announcement that Google is paying $3.1 billion (with a "b") for fledgling ad-serving company DoubleClick didn't really come as a suprise considering plans to sell the company were not a secret.

Talks of an anti-trust uproar from competitors like Yahoo! and Time Warner could delay completion of the deal, but will it really make a difference?

With reports that Google's pay-per-click (PPC) advertisers are planning to cut back what they spent just a year ago, Google obviously is not abandoning PPC advertising, but is offering another sign that it believes other advertising models work. Add to the mix ongoing click-fraud allegations and PPC advertising may have reached its apex.

Google is about to get its hands on a company that deals a lot with CPM (cost-per-thousand) impression advertising and now is beta testing a CPA (cost-per-action) model. Of course there's cost-per-lead, cost-per-acquisition, cost-per-fill-in-the-blank and even some flat-rate models offered to advertisers by publishers of all shapes and sizes.

Frankly, publishers and advertisers are experiencing a dwindling reliance on services like DoubleClick DART. Publishers have ad-serving technology readily available to them, and advertisers are having increasing difficulty justifying the costs.

Yahoo - will always compete -

- Unless its bought by MS or Goog. I think Google should acquire Yahoo. That would give them dominance for the for seen future. Then again - how much is Yahoo worth if Doublecick is worth 3.2b Yahoo must be worth atleast 50b

- how much cash does Google have on hand?
