It took just over five years, but Apple has sold its 100 millionth iPod. iTunes is keeping up its share of the bargain, too. 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies have been purchased through the service.
Other interesting statistics: 4,000 iPod accessories have been created, and more than 70 percent of 2007-model US automobiles offer iPod connectivity.
See our recent coverage around iTunes beginning to sell DRM-free music as well.
Will Apple sell 100 million iPhones by the end of 2012?

See all

Raise your hand if you don’t own any Apple shares….yet.
Should be “its share” rather than “it’s share” in the second sentence.
why thank you. fixed.
How many people have multiple iPods? I know my wife and I have four between us.
Not a huge Apple fan, but I am a huge fan of successful business, and that is just great, really cool.
I just can tender thanks Apple
Their products deserve respect!
When the iPhone launches and sales begin to rise, iPod sales will decrease.
I am still waiting for the iPhone to be a business success… I remember something about a bet
Dave
Can’t wait for the iPhone
I think the iPhone will do well, but nothing like this. We won’t be calling cell phones iPhones in 2012. I’m willing to bet most people’s first iPods were their first digital audio player. Not so with the iPhone.
People already know there are other products that work in this area. And the iPod certainly didn’t sell on features, but on style and simplicity. I don’t see that anywhere close to the same as the iPhone. As for myself, I’m not holding a phone up to my face just to dial when buttons work fine, they give me feedback, and they don’t require my eyes necessarily.
My guess is the iphone and the future variations on it will easily sell more than this. Not everyone has to have an ipod but everyone will have a phone. What an amazing accomplishment…..
I can personally testify that every Ipod owner I know has bought two or three ipods, largely because the damn things kept breaking and the warranties had expired.
Still, selling an overpriced underfunctional buggy constantly-breaking easily-scratched product to 33 million people is a testament to the power of marketing.
Will Apple sell a million iPhones by the end?
You betcha! We Americans are great beta testers.
Once we’ve paid premium prices for release candidates 1, 2, and 3 - we’ll finally upgrade to the production worthy version on-sale and still think we got a great deal!
Apple is genius!
iPhones are entertainment devices that are to expensive to justify for the mass market as a personal purchase and are not blackberry equivalents to expense as a business purchase.
The lack of real buttons is probably also going to be a little bit of an annoyance for the regular user.
They will however, serve as an upgrade for the iPod owners looking for a better, bigger video iPod and are willing to pay for it - which Apple has clearly demonstrated is still a pretty large crowd.
Blah blah blah…. hey guys I’m uber smart and I can predict the market better than Apple’s management team!
I say iPhone will fail cause I’m so uber smart I figured out that you can’t justify $500 as mass market and it’s not as good as BlackBerry!
Hey guys! I’m uber smart!
I’d bet the installed base is no where near 100 million. I’ve owned 5. Few people I know who own one, have owned ONLY one.
I am also curious how many of those 100 million are $69 shuffles.
I still don’t own an ipod, despite the fact I use Macs. Probably will never own one either, I still think it is an absolute waste of money. There are probably many other people out there who view it the same way I do as well.
*waits for Apple Zealots to come out screaming*
who knew portable music would be this important?
No product, not even an Apple product will sell this way ever. It was a revolution and it was cool, don’t think anything will ever come close to it.
Does anyone know if Apple will release a touch screen iPod with the internet connectivity portion of the iPhone?
I think they’d have more “market penetration” if they offered a $350 - $400 touch screen iPod that has everything the iPhone offers except the phone portion. Personally I want my phone to be a little more rugged (and smaller) than the iPhone appears to be but would love if I could take out my iPod and start browsing the web and chatting using local wifi networks.
Also; Apple “needs” to open up the iPhone to developers.
Who would even try to compete with the Ipod. They have it locked up through brand awareness. Game over!
I think the iPhone will sell like wildfire, but a 100 million by 2012? — doubtful. Things can change a lot in 5 years.
Then again, these guys are masters….I’m strokin’ my Mac right now…savoring the warm metal under my fingers. I’ll be snagging an iPhone for certain!
After getting to use an iPhone this weekend… apple will sell as many as they can manufacture… period.
Glad I own some apple share… kind of ironic I only have one apple product and it’s a free ipod I was given. I’d rather spend my $ on a cheaper mp3 player that works the same
Oh well. Apple has “COOL” commercials that get the younger generation interested in ALL their products because they are so damn slick and COOOOOL!!
I’d say that beats the 20 Zunes sold this month!
ipod is my favorite music player. no wonder it reached 100 millionth sale. i’m awaiting for the release of iphone which will be another big hit for apple.
