[...] Via TechCrunch: MySpace has more registered members than Mexico has people. If it was a country it would be the 11th largest in the world. So while it may be a major marketing event for MySpace to say it’s holding a presidential primary next January, you can be sure the candidates will take it seriously. The MySpace primary will be held on January 1 & 2, 2008, before any of the official state primaries. Every user will be asked to vote for their favorite candidate. [...]

We all know that young people tend to vote with the person that has the most flash and "seems" like he is going to change the world (aka give them longer recess)

Obama is the obvious frint runner in this MySpace primary, but he is a long shot to make it out of the actual primary even if he does promise everyone longer recess and more snacks...

ROFL, what a joke. They forgot to add Tila Tequila to the candidate list. If you really want to know who's gonna win, you're better off monitoring the betting markets like InTrade.com and WSEX.com. Democrats are leading by a large margin and within the Dems, it's Clinton as the frontrunner, followed by Obama (who is gaining steam), and then Gore (who isn't running), and then Edwards.

Such an on-line "primary" will not tell us more than Iowa and New Hampshire--states that are so far removed from the demographic profile of the whole country. A primary here would attract mostly younger voters. But they will not turn out and cast their votes--especially not in primaries; that's left to the older generations.
The problem is, of course, that the media will hype the results just as those of the early caucus and primary states and thereby make and break candidates.

Glad to see Obama doing it without the backing of Corporate America! At least is not selling his soul like the rest of them to raise money! I think the stats are pretty accurate based on the fund raising numbers relesed today! Go Obama!

That's sick. And, why not use a neutral third-party? I don't want myspace representing my vote.

At the end of the day, myspace is becoming another media company capable of swaying opinions. And under the control of a media company.

It is no longer a neutral playing field and should not be involved with this process at all.

I agree with avatar on this one...the figures are way-way overblown...This is very similar to what's going on in the business world where everyone is painting a wrong picture of their company's financial buoyancy just to scare away potential prospective competitors from the market. Here's just a few of the many examples available: "Google announces US$1.5b takeover of YouTube...??", "Ebay announces US$4b takeover of ......?"- everyone now knows!

I think it would be pretty hard for a woman to rule! May be they'll have to wait till next millennium. Black president? May be there is a chance that'll happen sometimes in the nearest future, but not in 2008! Honestly, myspace "campaign" is a mere joke, business-gains oriented for the major player (News Corp). This MySpace open "joke" is a great way to grab the attention of the public - to get more people to become members - QED!

I seem to remember a figure of over 150 million registered users being mentioned recently in which case myspace would be the 7th largest country somewhere between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Obviously myspace has nowhere near this number of users - like many people commenting above, I also have several accounts.

Not sure why you think myspace accounts are not tied to an email address because they are! Facebook may seem more reliable but it is just as easy to set up accounts which are not tied to an academic network and therefore not verified by an email address.

Also, the myspace demographic may not be so skewed towards the teens... Comscore said last year that more than half of myspace users were over 35 http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=1019

Err Mike, so it means Myspace got over 115 million ACTIVE users?... because that is the because that is the number of Mexicans there are LIVING in mexico right now (and 40 all over the word, 30 in the U.S.A)

i doubt such numbers are remotely true.

Pete cashmore should have more detailed numbers on that.. but i calculate that there are only 40-50 (tops) million user in Myspace, and from that only 35 should be from USA..

one thing is 115 million registrations, (hell when i played around it, i got to have 10 myspace accounts).. and another is actual active users..

the smae applies for the number in something like world of warcraft.. there might been 7 million activations.. but the same rule applies, only 3-4 of those 7 millions are active users.

as you said.. such numbers are way overblown..

@ Jason Alba (#24)

Seems to me this might be a way to get MySpace to diversify their demographics - if they can get more adults and people of voting age to get accounts and participate

Interesting thought... that is probably why they do it. MySpace has earned a reputation for being a playground for American teenagers and viral marketers. Maybe MySpace tries to reach adults this way.

@ MySpace Fan (#31) and (#47)

Ha ha. How much did MySpace pay you to write that?

I think one of the big stories about the election will be how the Internet and online communities shapes the race. What is funny about MySpace is most of its "citizens" aren't old enough to vote. And yet in some ways they will actually get a vote in this election since this MySpace election will certainly affect the real race via PR and the blogosphere.

In addition, the democrats are way outpacing the republicans online - here is a story with some of the details behind the Internet marketing stats for the different candidates: http://www.smallbusinesshub.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/1286/Presidential-Internet-Marketing-Data-Comparing-Obama-Clinton-Edwards-Romney-Giuliani-McCain.aspx

I am so excited to see how the candidates leverage the web for the election. I've been waiting a long time for this! Very cool!

I hope they don't just focus on MySpace - I think it's a very good, very big and very successful site, but it's not the only place people hang out. I'd love to see them realize this and hit TagWorld, Nextcat, etc., too.

In my lifetime, the presidency of the US has become a joke. A mass media joke full of parties, wings and sides... For a lot of people I know, this is not a race to the white house... its a race to get someone out of the white house...

Next year, when MySpace puts up the mock election page, it's not hard for them to build in an algorithm that allows only those who are based in the U. S. and over 18 to vote.

Vote frauds usually cancel each other out. If one Hillary supporter casts 5 votes, it is likely to be balanced by an anti-Hillary voter who votes for his candidate 5 times. Let's face it, vote frauds happen on all sides.

According to ComScore, 65 million MySpace users visit the site regularly. If only 1% of those users bother to cast votes in this mock election, you get 650,000 votes, which is a significant data.

Some of you folks are funny. I'm French and I could vote five times for Hillary (a friend of mine) or whoever is candidate. Georgeous idea! I'm so excited to start voting in the USA. Sorry but French election sucks.

Back to serious, great blog Michael! Thanks.
