@ Dean: I agree fully but I think it would be a little much for them to explain that mccain actually stole from Mike. Saying hacker is much more common knowledge and get the point across to less technologically savvy people. But like I said, I agree. Someone might now associate newsvine wth hackers even though he never touched their profile.

I probably take this sort of thing too seriously, but it irks me when “The Daily Show” misstates the facts (e.g., the “hacker” thing). Yeah, it’s ostensibly just a comedy show — but given that its observations and POV are generally so much sharper than those of most “real” news TV, I hold them to a higher standard.

Maybe I’m just cynical when it comes to anything MySpace, but the interestingness of this sort of thing expired for me circa the late 1990s. The only reason everyone is doing it is that everyone *else* is doing it. It’s just free advertising — and very, as the kiddies say, Web 1.0.

I’d love to see candidates push the boundaries of Internet campaigning into new territory — with something that exhibited an understanding of both the particulars of the medium *and* politically relevant ideas. But no, slapping a photo and some slogans onto a populist social network isn’t really doing it for me.

(Not to mention that notorious hipster John Kerry already tried it last election.)
