The “enhancement” that Newsvine CEO Mike Davidson made to Presidential Candidate John McCain’s website was mentioned on the Daily Show Thursday evening. Lots of other mainstream press attention, too. Davidson’s shareholders should be happy – this was a major guerrilla marketing event for Newsvine.

And it continues…
Here is a link to the segment video at Comedy Central’s website: http://www.come...?ml_video=84575
There is a button at the bottom right of the video taht says ‘EMBED’. You can get the embed code there.
It was mildly funny on the day, I’m a little surprised the Daily Show is using this now. By definition if you’re not looking at it online you have to explain it, which never really adds much to the humor.
It was part of a longer segment about online campaigning.
Daniel – thanks very much. embedded now.
Oh man… that’s messed up that they called Mike a “Hacker”….
Everyone knows he’s a Hax0r!
Direct Textbooks: What’s even more mildly funny is when people comment on popular blogs in order to place thinly veiled marketing links back to their own websites… only to have their actual links removed by the watchful blog author. Now that’s some mildly funny stuff!
Kevin: Heh. Careful, Tailrank is next! The last time we had beers, I told you what a great alternative brand “Tailrank” could be, right? If not, we’ll discuss in a few weeks. Congrats on Spinn3r, by the way.
Now we know the devious plans of http://newswhine.com and why all these cheap stunts of its cheap officer.
oh the comedy central flash player is banned at school.
“Now we know the devious plans of blah blah blah”
Nagendra Bandi seems to be the whiner. Anyone want to register bandiwhine.com?
video is carino of commendia generalista
Thanks for the laugh!
I saw a story about this via CNN. I think it is funny. But what is interesting is that candidates are moving to such things as MySpace.
I probably take this sort of thing too seriously, but it irks me when “The Daily Show” misstates the facts (e.g., the “hacker” thing). Yeah, it’s ostensibly just a comedy show — but given that its observations and POV are generally so much sharper than those of most “real” news TV, I hold them to a higher standard.
@ RyanB: “But what is interesting is that candidates are moving to such things as MySpace.”
Maybe I’m just cynical when it comes to anything MySpace, but the interestingness of this sort of thing expired for me circa the late 1990s. The only reason everyone is doing it is that everyone *else* is doing it. It’s just free advertising — and very, as the kiddies say, Web 1.0.
I’d love to see candidates push the boundaries of Internet campaigning into new territory — with something that exhibited an understanding of both the particulars of the medium *and* politically relevant ideas. But no, slapping a photo and some slogans onto a populist social network isn’t really doing it for me.
(Not to mention that notorious hipster John Kerry already tried it last election.)
Internet campaining is coming full-time baby…way to go…what about the other candidates..
There are some lessons for startups here
a) Try to give away things for free.. you never know who might end up using it.
b) And if you get someone BIG using it, dont miss out on the opportunity
@ Dean: I agree fully but I think it would be a little much for them to explain that mccain actually stole from Mike. Saying hacker is much more common knowledge and get the point across to less technologically savvy people. But like I said, I agree. Someone might now associate newsvine wth hackers even though he never touched their profile.
Very funny ;
– Got to love the daily show – mad props –
– all though colbert report is better ….

@ Dean: “I’d love to see candidates push the boundaries of Internet campaigning into new territory…”
If they were that smart and tech-savvy, they wouldn’t be in politics.
If you’re interested in keeping track of what “Web 2.0″ sites and services each candidate uses, I’ve been informally keeping track of it here: http://projects...son.com/prez08/
I’d never heard of newsvine before that, so guess the gamble worked for that aspect.
@Chris – John Edwards is kicking cyber butt eh? (the google ads on your site are funny too)
@Amy – yeah, he is… His efforts are what prompted me to start putting the table together. I don’t know how much of a difference it will make though.
hilarious.
Newsvine is, by far and large, the best example of what citizen journalism *should be* online. For example, everyone has a fair shot of getting their content recognized. Where else do you have such an opportunity?
Gee, I don’t know Ronald… maybe slashdot, digg, netscape, or any of the thousands of other social news clones out there. Not to knock newsvine – they have a great product – but it’s hardly a unique idea.

Mike Davidson sucks or newsvinesucks.com ?
Newsvine is great, I’m still surprised he did this, but its a really great site. If I were him I would have never let it come out that I was the one who did it.
