Thats crazy the artist has always made there money by touring name one artist unless he or he writes her own songs that makes millions of their records. The record company makes so much of your record plus you have to pay back the record company for all the recording you did. so that is a bunch of BS. The artist has always made money by touring.

Yes this is good news. Life is finally taking control (as it should) of overpaid entertainers and how "they" make a living. It's not proper to see a guy working in a factory for pennies on the hour, all day long, rarely see's his family or can afford his bills, and then die's of a young age because of it..and yet entertainers make millions, spend as much money as possible, and do nothing but have as many bf's,gf's,wives, or husbands as possible before they die...must be nice just because they carry a tune? well I can carry a programming language but I'll never make that much money, though I'm more intelligent than 99$ of these entertainers. Well not anymore, only a matter of time before life balanced itself out and we get to see it as it happens. Elvis and Michael Jackson are only two I can think of right now that deserve what they got. Elvis gave all his money away, and Jackson gave all his money away, and built his house for sick and crippled children and families. I don't see Jackson prancing around in gold chains, and fancy cars, and then bragging to all us poor folks about it on MTV. The haters can hate, but he's done more for people than every artist alive and dead to date. To hell with the rest of the music industry, yes they need to get off their ass if they really love music, and do concerts like in the past, instead of recording a cd, and sitting on their ass for the next 8 years while the cash flows in. That's nothing but bs, get a real job is right like the rest of the world. Work at McDonalds, and make music as your second job, that's how it should be, and eventually it will be. Just a matter of time until reality hits these people, that think they don't have to work because they work in the music biz.... it's time to wake up from your dream, it's time to get a real job and make real wages! Can't sell a cd? then sell your gold chain or that big mansion you love to show on MTV 24 hrs. a day, get a life! You make me sick!

To the vast majority of musicians out there the difference to their lives of losing CDs as an income stream would not be great. Only a few platinum and multi-platinum artists with the best record deals and extraordinary sales figures are able to retire on their album sales. The average artist is, instead, saddled not merely with lower sales figures but also a very small cut of the per album revenue (typically on the order of $1 per CD) and then forced to pay the production costs of their album out of that meager cut. Even a small band (say 4 members) with low production costs will end up with only a modest income even if they manage to put out an album with half a million sales per year. And most bands don't have sales that high.

Most artists make their money, indeed HAVE to make their money, from concerts and merchandise. Even though ticket prices might be as low as 2x album prices, the artists take home a vastly larger percentage of that revenue. Most artists can easily make more money in a single month of touring than they can from album sales over the entire year.

One more thing, I dont download music either. I think I have everything worth listening to. I don't like any music that has been made in about the last decade. Record companies seem to forget about anyone over 16 years of age.

I look at it this way. The lack of sales is due to the fact that most new music is crap. You can get online and hear a tease at the "artist website" and if it's crap you are not going to buy it. I rarely find a cd worth buying, and certainly no cd is worth more than ten dollars even if it's good music.
My music collection consists of older CD's and LP's. Music is pretty much "over" for anyone my age (37) with an ear for real music.
The record co's need to stop peddling bogus "artists" and focus more on the music.
