Gumby always creeped me out. I think it’s the tangential connection to, “Davey and Goliath.”

But that’s neither here nor there. I just wish YouTube would finally adopt the functionality of Google Video - at least there, I can dump videos onto my PSP. (Yes, I’m that guy in North America that has a PSP. Yeay me!)

I think it’s this great “middle-ground” of content - not user-generated, but not top-ranked current or near-current prime-time fare - which must be considered when thinking about the YouTube uproar (in all it’s many incarnations). This type of content - Gumby is a perfect example (thanks for bringing this to our attention, Mike) is what once might have been slapped into a DVD compilation. Perhaps it would have sold 100,000 copies - at great marketing expense. But with the reach and efficiency of YouTube, one can easily imagine the views going into the millions, and tens of millions. And with a monetization strategy, everyone wins.

So while I can certainly see the Viacom side of the story (not wanting their champagne stolen, or sold for grape-juice prices), I can imagine all these grape juice vendors clamouring to be a part of this new marketplace.

the damn shame of it is that i’d bet that the majority of people here weren’t born when murphy did the original ‘i’m gumby dammit’ skit on SNL…

but it was funny as hell, and pretty much put him on the map, along with ‘mister robinson’s neighborhood’…
