YouTube Troubles Are Over: They Got Gumby
by Michael Arrington on March 16, 2007

Despite the sarcasm of the title, I’m pretty excited to hear that, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gumby, all 200+ Gumby episodes will soon be available in full length on YouTube, AOL and other video sites. Each episode includes the original soundtrack and has been digitally remastered by Art Clokey, the son of Gumby creator Joe Clokey. The first Gumby episode, Gumby on the Moon, is here.

I grew up on this stuff.

Sharing of Gumby videos has been turned off on YouTube, so no embedding on other sites. I embedded the classic Saturday Night Live skit instead.

Yay Gumby!

Honestly, I was recently thinking about how much I miss Gumby! But not his gender-challenged pink sidekick “Pokey” (can’t go there, yet…)

When I was a kid I had one of those green rubber Gumby dolls that were made of some kind of recycled tire material in the days before Consumer Reports existed. After a few hours of playing, his wrist would break open revealing a stiletto-sharp steel wire — perfect for poking out eyeballs!

Ah, youth.

Seems like Gumby is ya’ll(old folks *cough*) what Mogli(http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=mogli&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2) is to my generation from India. I miss it dearly!

Just and FYI, I just went to YouTube and was able to embed the episode of Gumby on MySpace.

Are those floodgates I hear cracking? I don’t see how other studios are going to be able to hold back now that Gumby broke ranks.

the damn shame of it is that i’d bet that the majority of people here weren’t born when murphy did the original ‘i’m gumby dammit’ skit on SNL…

but it was funny as hell, and pretty much put him on the map, along with ‘mister robinson’s neighborhood’…

peace..

I think it’s this great “middle-ground” of content - not user-generated, but not top-ranked current or near-current prime-time fare - which must be considered when thinking about the YouTube uproar (in all it’s many incarnations). This type of content - Gumby is a perfect example (thanks for bringing this to our attention, Mike) is what once might have been slapped into a DVD compilation. Perhaps it would have sold 100,000 copies - at great marketing expense. But with the reach and efficiency of YouTube, one can easily imagine the views going into the millions, and tens of millions. And with a monetization strategy, everyone wins.

So while I can certainly see the Viacom side of the story (not wanting their champagne stolen, or sold for grape-juice prices), I can imagine all these grape juice vendors clamouring to be a part of this new marketplace.

That is awesome - I can honestly say I am a Gumby fan!

can we get the video embedded here now that it’s been set!!!?

father and son spell their names differently, huh?

Gumby. Man. I want it on DVD.

When. Can I download it. Anyone know. iTunes Maybe.

Michael,

You made my day! Seriously! Some of my happiest memories were watching Gumby when I was a kid. Woohoo!

Thanks,
Doug

I get video unavaliable =-(

Michael,
This is pretty cool! This is the second animation related link in a week. You’re a cartoon nerd, huh?

Mmmm…I never was a big Gumby fan.

Gumby was created by Art Clokey. His son, Joe Clokey, has digitally remastered the old man’s work. Joe is also the creator of the animated series Davy and Goliath.

Gumby always creeped me out. I think it’s the tangential connection to, “Davey and Goliath.”

But that’s neither here nor there. I just wish YouTube would finally adopt the functionality of Google Video - at least there, I can dump videos onto my PSP. (Yes, I’m that guy in North America that has a PSP. Yeay me!)

I’m getting a “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.” error when trying to see the video…

The word “bespoke” does not mean what you think it does.

guess that didn’t last long - gumby videos now show up w/ the ‘This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.’ message.

testing using link name.

wow. that skit was awful.

Your information is incorrect - Art is the father, Joe is the son. Fix that.
