And they just take the easy way out by spitting up an error message when you view the site using firefox and give a link to download Internet Explorer. Well, that's just not how they should be doing business. If I was a loyal firefox user, they would lose my business for good - even after they do fix the problem.

walmart didn't do this on accident, their code isn't nearly complex enough to make it unreasonable for one person to figure out the problem and fix it. from what I can see, they only meant for the music to be downloaded using IE w/ DRM protection [to prevent illegal copying] which makes tons of sense considering no one intending to illegally copy music would ever be caught alive in walmart. since they don't intend it to be used by anything but IE, walmart didn't put the effort into making it multi-browser complient. if firefox and safari bowed to DRM like IE did this would probably not be an issue. and here's why walmart isn't going to do anything: safari and firefox make up roughly 12% or so of the entire browser population- walmart naturally deemed 12% to be "insignificant." they are unfortunately, willing and able to get away with it.

well, at last check, the site is down for maintenance (feb11, 12:15pm toronto time).

i tried to change my user agent in camino to see what would happen. i see trichognosis scooped me on the user agent thingy but ahwell.

i can only wonder if walmart is changing their sight after the onslaught of bad press. my guess is they went with IE purely because of vista/ms drm and the mpaa (Movies' Puritanical Asshole Assholciation).

I went there with Safari and couldn't get in... then I flushed my cookies with "Reset Safari" from the menu items, enabled the Safari debug menu, chose "user agent Windows MSIE 6", and went to:

http://mediadownloads.walmart.com/index.php

Which promptly loaded up just fine with just a smidgeon of smeared text in the upper left corner ("Welcome Guest") and a missing header of some sort with a reference to a non-existent plug-in. Mind you, then clicking on Category Links doesn't load anything... but clicking on an actor in the upper right results in an excruciatingly long load time of a java applet.

Wal-Mart is evil and all, but this WAS labeled Beta. Still, if they lock out non-IE users forever they're even biggers fools than I'd thought. Or is it just that non-IE users are less likely to shop at Wal-mart in the first place and they figure "Screw it, we won't get enough business from those users to justify fixing the code...It's just not cost-effective!"..?

rule #1 prior to going live. test compat. with major browsers. IE 6 AND 7..FF2. Maybe Safari. Anything else doesn't count yet.

rule #2 back up everything.

rule#3 punch that publish button.

whoever didn't test FF is clueless. A techy crowd that downloads movies would almost 100% know of and also use FF.

They still (02/07/2007 - 5:30 pm) haven't figured out how to fix it. Seems like that's what you get when you hire cheap programmers "Always the low price. Always"

"If you don’t use IE to surf the web… you don’t deserve to surf the web."

I beg to differ. Firefox is much more compatible with more websites than IE has ever been. As a web developer I find that more often than not I have to work harder to make pages and templates display properly in IE than I do for firefox. I've seen many pages that were broken like heck in IE but displayed without a single problem in firefox.
