Web 2.0 Directory Go2Web20 Upgraded

Michael Arrington

When we first wrote about Go2Web20 on its release in September 2006, it was a side project of Israeli founders Orli Yakuel and Eyal Shahar. They thought it would be a nice way to show off their passion for Flash and keep a directory of new web startup logos and basic information.

The site proved to be so popular that the two have kept working on it, adding new companies and products (there are nearly 800 now). They’ve also changed the user interface substantially and have added Ajax components to the site. If anything, this is a fun site to just click around on and read about startups.

Logos can be sorted by date added or alphabetically. Clicking on a logo brings up basic information at the bottom of the page, and companies can also add their own code (a video, RSS feed, widget, etc.).

The site is also taking advertisers for the first time (we are advertising on the site to support this project). Information on advertising is here.

Great website, too bad its having problems loading, techcrunch effect.

  2. Zhai

Well, there is simmilar site working already - iloggo.com. It’s a polish project.

  3. Eyal Shahar

We are having DNS issues, since the domain was transfered just a short while ago. It will be up and running in no time.

  4. Michael Arrington

it sure is dead right now :-)

  5. Ali

How much is advertising? Since the site is dead maybe some information can be relayed here.

  6. Aloni

yeah, at the end no matter how much time you invest in developing its the small things that kill ya, in this case moving domain dns caching issue.

  7. Piku

Still it does not work for me.

  8. Oobie Doobie Kanoobie

    Works now for me

  9. Michael Arrington

I did a hard refresh and the site is now live for me.

  10. Yohay Elam

It sure is a great site! I recently read a blog post in Hebrew that mentioned TechCrunch and Go2Web20 in the same breath.

  11. Oobie Doobie Kanoobie

Although your “suggest a site” email address is not working (assume thats the dns issue as well).

    Guess i’ll suggest it here then - http://www.swamii.com ;)

  12. Web2Blow

It is amazing what Michael is willing to do, just to help his ex-Israeli gf. He gave her the idea about the site, promoted it number of times in the past, gave her the new business model and now helping her to get the advertisers….I guess it was worth it

  13. Laura

    Still not loading

  14. Bill

Yeah, it’s still dead. Does TechCrunch use MediaTemple for everything, database included?

  15. Aloni

doesn’t strike as a dns problem.

    hey, i’ll suggest mine here

  16. Mooky 2.0

    @Web2Blow :

Advertising a dead site is more like a penalty, so i doubt your theory.
    This sure is bad publicity.

  17. Web2Blow

    @ Mooky 2.0

    What I’m saying is not a theory…facts.
The site is down because of the huge traffic this publicity has generated, which means, Michael’s help is working…. the site gets more traffic and might get advertising deals….Michael is giving the credibility….
Just look how many times he has already commented here…

  18. ted

Definately a load problem, not a DNS problem…

  19. Mr 2.0

    Techcrunch is Paying For Diggs!!

web2blow is correct…orli yakuel (owner of site) is michael’s ex-girlfriend from israel…the thing missing from the theory is that orli is one of the most powerful people on digg…if you are that powerful on digg you can promote any story to the front page.

orli’s digg screenname is ‘webtech’…if you look at her digg profile you can see she regularly submits techcrunch stories and gets them to the front page…looks like she is submitting crunchgear.com posts too. she even dugg this exact post! michael recently said that digg provides most of techcrunch’s traffic…so webtech is techcrunch’s biggest traffic source!

michael is buying ads on go2web2 and trying to make money for it so he can keep getting dugg! despicable!

  20. Markos

    Best directory !

  21. Web2Blow

Because of the fact that Orli was Michael’s ex-gf, all Israel entrepreneurs are afraid to say something bad about her….they will not get a coverage on TechCrunch. It is amazing what did this woman (33+), who was a secretary (until 3 months ago) has achieved since she met Michael.
This is what I call, The power of Branding2.0

This may shed some light on why it’s down

  24. Fashion Industry Ceo

I see mike hasn’t commented anymore since this hasn’t come to surface???hmm…;)

  25. staci b.

#19 mr web 2.0 - how do you know she is his ex-gf? there is no doubt that webtech gets nearly everything she/he posts on digg to the home page. interesting theory you have.

  26. DaanK Interworking

From where i’m at, the domainname doesn’t even resolve.

Seems like the site got other problems.

  27. TreeLife

This site is great. I like the fact that it gives you an outstanding idea of the kinds of Web 2.0 logos out there. So unique and so alike.

  28. Web2Blow

Please take a look at the original post Orli has posted on her blog introducing the new Directory features: http://go2web2.blogspot.com/20.....tions.html

    …and the first comment is from…. Michael…saying:
    count TechCrunch in.
    Mike, TC

and right after him is Ouriel, the guy who is writing the French version of TechCrunch saying:
Orli this is a great idea. Your directory rocks. no doubt advertisers will love it

You tell me if this is innocent or not…

  29. mijael

great page, i found it much better
    http://www.publishandwin.com

  30. Eran Arkin

As part of a personal project, I put together a dynamically updated list of the leading web 2.0 sites, their alexa performance, and how their stats compare against the other sites in the last day, week or month.

I used the alexa API to create the list, and it’s currently hosted on eSnips, though it’s not related to the site, I just work there…

If you want to take a look, check out http://movers20.esnips.com and please leave me comments (Suggest link on top).

  31. Startup Booster

I’ve used their directory before. Great visual presentation of all the Web 2.0 sites. However they need to step up make the interface a bit more 2.0 style.

Anyhow I can’t get to their site now. Seems like they are feeling the crunch effect.

  32. Mr 2.0

    @staci b.

here is a picture of michael and orli together here in israel…

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/m.....106651908/

orli’s photo stream also has lots of michael and techcrunch images….(flickr.com/photos/orliy1/)

here is orli’s digg account. most of the stories she submitted are from crunchgear…and many of the stories she dugg are from techcrunch….(digg.com/users/webtech/)

this proves that michael is paying (buying ads on go2web20) cos orli is his ex girlfriend and she creates most of the traffic for his sites. michael should be *ashamed* and the other web2 directories should be *angry* becos they are getting excluded so michael can make more money! shameful!

  33. orli20

Please find Orli’s Flicker account, where she publish all her TechCrunch related images, something like teenager worship.
She even published a screenshot of the her Digg username (webtech) on the site’s top ten.

  34. orli20

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/orliy1/

  35. Ouriel Ohayon

Congrats to Eyal and Orli for their nice work, i know how hard they worked on it. Too much “brave” anonymous bashing is going on here.

  36. Mr 2.0

I remember this recent post on michaels personal blog (http://www.crunchnotes.com/?p=342)…this proves that orli is responsible for techcrunch traffic….

‘In response to a couple of inquiries, here are the top 11 sources of TechCrunch traffic in December 2006 (via Google Analytics):

    1. google[organic] 391,034
    2. (direct)[(none)] 326,796
    3. digg.com[referral] 192,774

Digg remains a very important site for overall TechCrunch traffic.’

Also, a man called niall kennedy put this in the comments…

‘You should send Orli a nice thank you gift for Valentines Day after driving that much traffic.’

it is despicable that michael has not disclosed that go2web is created by his ex gf and one of the big sources of techcrunch traffic. orli should never be mentioned on techcrunch just becos she is his ex gf and makes a lot of money for michael by getting his stories on digg.com!! michael you should be *ashamed*.

  37. Yaniv

Folks, may I point out (at the risk of getting oh-so-bashed) that the fact that Orli is one of the top digg users is widely known (heck, even Orli herself published a screenshot of this on her Flickr some time ago), Orli’s entire digging history is obviously open for anyone to look at, Orli’s picture with Mike has been publicly available on Mike’s Flickr stream for ages, and Mike has “disclosed” in his post that he is advertising on Go2Web20 to support it.

This is top-notch detective work, uncovering well known and public facts. Oh well.

I would also risk guessing that TechCrunch posts are interesting enough to make it to Digg’s home page without any top digg user help.

I for one would like to applaud Mike for setting a consistently high standard for full disclosure, one that the folks hiding behind funny nicknames may want to follow.

  38. Lenny

Things have now taken an interesting turn. First, the go2web20 site going down due to …. traffic or a bad server??? Only, GoDaddy can tell.

Second, the whole Mike and Orli connection. Honestly, when I saw the photo by Mr 2.0 http://www.flickr.com/photos/m.....106651908/ I let out a small laughter. Besides, the whole disclosure and connection issues (where everyone have their own opinions), I could also see the two (Mike and Orli) tilting towards each other in Isreal, the ONLY way that strong (very strong) connections can allow (with his elbow aiming at her boobs). It’s a bit like the whole Da Vinci Code thing, with Jesus and Mary Magdalene sitting next to each other. Excuse me Dan Brown! But, it’s so obvious that Orli must be Mike’s ‘Isreal’s delight’ :-)

  39. tommyboy

I do not really know what is going on here. I just started reading every techcrunch post about a month ago. I just want to say Michael Arrington is the man, and Gotoweb20.net is an awesome site.

  40. Lenny

Yeah ‘tommyboy’. Mike is the man and Orli is the woman. You are just the boy. What is going on is beyond your scope. Grow up and see what adults see. This is called branding power 2.0 (or is it bottom power 2.0)!

  41. Yanik

i think the bit about the digg is more important than the girlfriend bit…I just looked at that webtech account and there are lotz of crunchnetwork stories that have got to the top of digg cos of that account…

…i heard michael charges $10,000 per month for the ads…if webtech got just 40% or 50% of the homepage stories…then she has earned michael *more than $15,000 per month!*

to yaniv, i think this would be a better disclosure…

‘I have only written about this company becuase orli earns me 10s of thousands of dollars and used to be my girlfriend.sorry to all the other web 2.0 directories.’

  42. Zaid

    Congrats to Orli and Go2web20.

When you got folks gossiping about you a la Paris Hilton, you know you’re doing something right:)

    Cheers,

    Zaid

  43. gadgets expose

I feel that the little about the digg is more important than the bitten girl friend.

I just looked at this account of webtech and there is lotz stories of crunchnetwork which owe the top of the digg cos of this account.

I heard expenses $10.000 of Michael per month for the ADS… if the webtech obtained just 40% or 50% of the stories of homepage…

then it gained Michael * more than $15.000 per month! * of the yaniv, I think that it would be a better revelation…

I only wrote about this company than the orli of becuase gains me 10s thousands of dollars and employed to be my girlfriend.sorry with all the other sequence 2.0 directories.’

  44. Jerome

    More daysofourlivescrunch! Woohoo! :)

Seriously, if powerful digg users water down the quality of front page results then that’s a problem in the site’s model, not the very human users. Wake up people. This is Mike’s blog, and either you feel he tries to be open and objective for coverage in the interest of his readers or you don’t. Just the fact that he allows comments that bash him tells you he is not trying to avoid disclosure.

  45. Dominik Hahn

    S.L.O.W.

Can anyone tell me what’s so special about it? I don’t feel like scrolling through hundreds of small images just to find out that the actual page isn’t what I expected from the logo.

  46. E O Fall

Yo. Get off this homiz back. Fo real man. Unlike this haters the guy has a life. Most of the people who have a problem with this are the ones who spend the entire day on a computer screen and can’t have girlfriends. If a great startup or technology was created by Mikes chuwawa then so be it. Let’s hear about it. Besides if you are that upset it doesn’t seem that you are paying to read the blog. Just kick rocks. If your argument is not related to the product covered please be quiet.
Now web2blow. Sorry about what happened back then. We know your story. Just let it go.

  47. Ashish Mohta

Really good site.Lol and yeah so true the techrunch affect can give any site a true test of loading.

    thx for the update

  48. Mike Koss

The site is a good redesign from what they had before - the tag cloud dropdown is a big improvement over the listbox(!) of keywords they had before.

But the site still suffers from dramatic performance problems. My opinion - they need some more technical help in building a high-performance site. There is really no excuse for it’s speed problems. They should focus on image caching, downloading multiple images at once (image array), and other techniques.

What I really want, is a something like a “top box office” list (Merisel?) we used in the days of packaged software. How about something that shows all these categories sorted by their Alexa ranking, and shows last-week versus this-week rank and estimated weekly page views?

  49. Zhai

Did anyone notice my first post?

http://www.iloggo.com is same as it, and… no shit! it works! :D

  50. Dan

This is one slow site. It reminds me of Friendster in the early days.

  51. heisenberg

i tried to load this page. then i just read all of these very amusing comments, went back to the page and it is still loading. say what? the drama above may be a tad sketchy (or not), but isnt the real problem that this web 2.0 directory is running at web 0.2 speed and giving me flashbacks of loading programs from a cassette tape to my TRS80 circa 1985? so i guess the drama is for not. so what if she drives some traffic to Mike, now Mike drives some traffic to her. But when Mike drives traffic to her, everyone sees that the site is slooooow and not useful anyway, and then they don’t go back. problem solved, right? the page is still loading, btw. awesome

  52. Yaro

    dear heisenberg,

every1 can see go2web2 sucks. the bad thing is that michael only wrote about it because orli is a powerful user of the digg site..her digging makes lot of money for techcrunch….$20,000+ per month, i heard. i feel sorry for the other web 2.0 directory people…they are alot better but they don’t appear on techcrunch because those people didn’t date michael and make michael lots of money with digg….

  53. Drama 2.0

    What drama - 2.0!

Seriously, though, nothing to see here (literally).

  54. Robert Dewey

This is my final attempt at commenting… The past three tries have failed.

Here are some questions that I pose to some of the commenters:

    1) Why shouldn’t TC be able to use their money the way they want?
    2) Why shouldn’t TC be able to author their blog the way they want?
    3) Why is disclosure so important to you personally?

I enjoy this blog because I like seeing cool new startups. I don’t care what is or isn’t disclosed - I simply want to see cool sites. If I wanted to know who is breaking up with who, who’s involved with what particular woman, or why “so-and-so” is frivolously spending money, I would watch Soap Operas…

  55. Smaran

I think Robert just made one of the most sensible and intelligent comments on this thread.

If you must know, Orli and Mike are friends. Beyond that, it is no one’s business. If they were dating, good for them! So please, stop talking down people and get on with your lives, anonymous commenters.

And if you’re making such outrageous statements claiming that Orli is responsible for so-and-so amount of digg traffic to TechCrunch, then what about me? My username is koregaonpark and I’ve got more TechCrunch stories on the digg front page than I can count. Am I getting paid? No. Mike has dropped me an IM saying thank you, but that’s it.

    Go spam someone else’s blog.

  56. Aleks

    Web2Blow.
It is funny to see powerless and envious creatures bash somebody for using the statue that they achieved to help somebody close to them promote a product that is actually good. It is only natural to stand behind your friends and recommend their work for as long as you are not ashamed of it. Each of you - anonymous losers would do the same. Isn’t that what most of you are here for, networking, hoping to establish your presence at least on the comments page. It is like catching your friend masturbating and making fun of him, even though you know you do it too.

  57. Milton

Ummmm isnt part of being 2.0 enabled having the ability to handle varying amounts of traffic, including large bursts? this site sux and is an aggregator of logos-nothing more.

  58. Tim

Re. the Orli drama - Isn’t this Michaels site? Can’t he write about what ever he wants?! If you don’t like how a website owner promotes things he wants to, then don’t read the website!

I don’t think go2web20.net is too bad - the flash interface is interesting, the logos are cool, what’s the problem?

I have also made a free visual web directory if anyone wants to try it - you can promote more than just your logo:
    http://bla.st/
    http://bla.st/web-2.0/
    http://bla.st/mac/

  59. Bilal

I think you guys ought to lay off Mike. What he does on his blog is HIS business, not yours. He doesn’t ask you guys to read his blog. He doesn’t promise anywhere that he’ll tell you every little detail about every little thing in his life. He writes a good, informative blog. We read it because it provides good, timely information. If you’re looking for scandal, move to SoCal ;)

  60. BillyWarhol

Wow nothing like dirty laundry aired in Public*

    Ouchykins*

    ;))

Will Mike + Orli be on Dancing with the Web2.0 Stars???

I looked at Web20Go & i’m happy to hear they’re Improving the Navigation of the site - Scrolling endlessly thru Flash pages was ridiculous*

    Cheers! Billy ;))

p.s. Mike + Orli - if ya get a chance pop by & say Hi on Flickr!!!

  61. Michael Arrington

    wow. interesting comments.

  62. Florian Cervenka

    Michael,
please disclose all your past relationships, one night stands, siblings, parents, possible children, your dog, people that you had a beer with and most important Heather Rene Smith.

  63. Michelle

Ahhh yes, his is why I love the SV crowd oh so much…highschool never really does go away does it?

If there was a ’special’ relationship b/w Arrington and Yakuel, I’m sure he would have disclosed it. The companies he does reviews on in which he has a monetary investment in, he discloses. And I know Arrington is aware that if there was a ’special relationship’ with Yakuel, that it would be an ‘emotional’ investment in which he probably should disclose since he is giving the site a glowing review. However, his silence should let you know that there is nothing going on beyond that of friendship.

@Dewey: Disclosure is important because readers want to know that the site being promoted is from an objective and unbiased opinion.

Ever heard of PayPerPost and why they had to implement the disclosure rule?

  64. Hassan

Michael + Orli sitting in a tree, Go2Web2.0 is the place to be!…I’m 18 and read this blog daily and frankly you all remind me of high school cause y’all acting like babies…I like the website though very cool and neat…if it’s a lil’ slow y’all just have to learn to be Patient…at least that’s what my teacher’s always say…enough said…

  65. Jerome

Good comeback, Mike. When I scrolled down and saw that you were about to comment I actually stopped to go get a snack first. I’m sitting here cracking up - you couldn’t script this! :)

  66. Rishi

Well if any of you feel particularly offended about the relationship between the two , you can just mine all the sites from “go2web20.net” and code the entire thing on ajax with the help of a few outsourced coders .
The entire thing will cost only around 10,000 dollars with a good website designing outsourced company that will maintain the site for 1 year and allow for a content management system.
To popularize your website just pay a couple of bloggers/ Stumbleupon and digg it until it gets hit.
Heres the Google search to get you started. I was going to give the actual sites where I find my coders but I didn’t want to promote any particular companies/outsourcing websites.
    http://www.google.com/search?s.....gle+Search

  67. Rishi

P.S. - The “in the blogsphere ” Toolbar can be powered by Technorati.
And make sure you understand “project planning”/project plans before outsourcing as well.

  68. Eyal Shahar

    Rishi,
The blogsphere list WAS from technorati, but I found their RSS to be really unstable lately. So I am trying google blogs. Thanks for the advice, anyway.

  69. Rishi

OK. Change that . You can power your outsourced clone on Technorati or Google Blogs.

    Thanks Eyal.

  70. Robert Dewey

Michelle (63) said: “Disclosure is important because readers want to know that the site being promoted is from an objective and unbiased opinion.”

I am a reader, and it’s not important to me - I am fully capable of making my own decision.

My question was based at those who are arguing that they need full disclosure. Why do they need disclosure? I’m not saying full disclosure is a bad thing, but bashing people over it is nonsense and I have a hard time understanding why some people need such in depth disclosures.

I think those who request “full disclosure” are those who have a vested interest in a similar venture, or are simply trolling. Otherwise, just enjoy the site :)

  71. ...some Drifter

all this BS is jamaican me crazay.

  72. Patricia

Ah, welcome to media business - these “favors” never happen with mainstream or traditional press :) Only Michael Arrington.

Though I wouldn’t call 75 posts on a blog one afternoon comparible to people “gossiping like it’s paris hilton”, either.

  73. Jordan

    Patricia,
These “favors” happen with the mainstream press but isn’t Web 2.0 supposed to be democratic and egalitarian? Aren’t all the Web 2.0 fanboys against mainstream press and their evil ways? Maybe when money gets involved everybody is willing to forget about “journalistic integrity”…

  74. ...some Drifter

michael’s credibility/integrity index has fallen 15% in my book.

  75. nedders

Yes, Zhai is absolutely right, iloggo works if you have a Polish babelfish implanted in your earhole!

  76. nedders

Lack of disclosure=failure to declare a conflict of interest=seeking or conspiring to obtain an advantage=prosecution for corrupt practices=go to jail; go directly to jail; do not pass go; do not collect $200=21 years on the old Rock Island Line!

    (Corporate Governance 101)

  77. Mooky 2.0

Who cares if what Mike and Orly has together?
They both run private sites/blog and have the right to do whatever they want with it.

  78. Michael Vu

    Arrington -

When you’re at the top, people will always try to shoot you down. Looks like TechCrunch is no different than Google or Microsoft, you have a growing group of haters.

  79. details

I want to know about all the details, I want full disclosure. Could you post a naughty video somewhere too. lol, I think were all a bit jealous ha. but theres nothing like a bit of gossip to get over that last bit. I started to read TC bc I thought it was exposing the startups as they deserved. Then I realized that that wasn’t really so but rather more into gossip. Then I realized that I actually liked the gossip, its great. One minute we’ve got the Demo scandle, next the Orilie one. We should start a thread on the forums to keep track of these cause I don’t want to miss them.

  80. dach

    it’s very hot here

  81. Doug K

All you people complaining about this should remember, you are supporting this site with every post and visit you make. Congrats to your continued success Mike, all of these haters made you that much richer today… oh and I actually like Go2Web20… but thats not what this article was about, oh wait it was!!

  82. Patricia

I don’t know if it makes mike richer, but it certainly makes for an entertaining day to read the postings.

It makes my friends and I crack up every time that there’s a gossip and slightly “celebrity” component to SV. Hilarious.

  83. Nenest

I love iloggo, but I think we should not only have iloggo.

Nenest.com - You build your own web warehouse effortlessly!
