ConvinceMe is a new competitive arguing site launching tonight. It will let debaters carry out public debates, head to head arguments, and a “King of the Hill” free for all about any subject they like. Other argument sites, like Hot Soup and LoveToLead, have focused on sobering issues, like political or philosophical debates and polls. Comment threads and forums have also been great places for people to argue. Just look at the comments for Do the Right Thing.
ConvinceMe lets members talk about anything and ranks them based on how many “convince” points they get from user voting for their argument. Private debates are issued as public challenges from one member to another and end when one site has gained the agreed number of votes for their side. For public debates, each side’s arguments are ordered by the number of votes the arguments have. “King of the Hill” is a twist on the challenge debate, with each member only able to submit one argument for their position. The first argument with 100 votes wins. The final type, public debates are ongoing, with the votes for one side or the other marking the overall opinion of the community on the subject. Apparently pirates are better than ninjas right now. However, it wasn’t “Ask a Pirate” that allegedly pulled in over 300K last year.
IntenseDebate.com is another debate site under development as noted in the TechCrunch Forums.
Update: ConvinceMe has resolved the sign-up issues.

I’ve been following http://www.intensedebate.com and look forward to it’s release – good job, Josh!
it would be cool if their sign up form worked (for convinceme.net). well, i’m never visiting there again.
What’s next? FightingSpouses.com? Heh, oh well. Sign up form still isn’t working, apparently they have a PHP error.
Every bored 18-year-old launches an amateur Web 2.0ish site. What the hell… The space is getting real crowded with companies that provide no real value to the end-user. Waste of time.
Watching 24 isn’t particularly edifying, but draws a crowd and makes money. Why do websites have to be? If it’s entertaining and draws advertisers it will succeed.
Seems like these are springing up all over, another good one I’ve been using is http://www.justifyyourself.com with a more comedic and harsh spin…
Here’s a battle….
What’s worse:
Entering the “are you human” signup code correctly and having the system tell you you’re wrong
OR
Receiving a fatal runtime error
Get that signup worked out before the release….
Their privacy policy gives a 404 page not found error.
You have got to be SHITTING me!!!!! Ninjas are way better than pirates.
Thanks for the mention. I love competition!
O-o-uch, talk about irony,
getting a highly valued profile on TechCrunch and the sign-up has a bug – it keeps indicating The Image Code is Incorrect
For all those Start-Ups submitting profile requests to TechCrunch – please give your sites a once over beforehand to clear up any bugs
sorry, was moving PEAR. Didn’t know this was coming out tonight. sorry, woops.
Brett, have we met somewhere along the line?
Vote ninjas!
I just watched a video where Michael Arrington explains how to get on techcrunch. he says me too sites are ruled out, adjectives are ignored etc etc.
then i come here and see this.
?????
Is there any place to email to find out when the site’s coming back up?
Problem fixed.
How dumb!
I went to that site before I even read any of the comments. Not surprisingly, my reaction wasn’t any different from others.
What a waste of time!! … can they… or anyone convince me that it isn’t? Well, even if you do, convincing me will just be a waste of your time.
Dumb!
ConvinceMe is headed to the deadpool. As permanent hater, DrDoubt and Moisee all pointed out, absolutely no one likes to waste time arguing on the Internet.
Some would say commenting on a blog about a site wasting your time at 12-2 AM in the morning would be wasting your time, but that would be a silly thing to think right?
I just always enjoy the irony and hypocrisy of the comments in blogs. Now permanent hater, DrDoubt and Moisee go spend your time “wisely” commenting and reading on your 5000 RSS feeds.
I’m not sure, because as it sounds I’m like most of you who have never been covered by techcrunch (or anyone of mention, basically), but most of the time, you don’t get a notice from someone saying “You’ll be covered on this day, starting at this hour, be ready”–when you’re on, you’re on.
SS wrote: “absolutely no one likes to waste time arguing on the internet.” Really? Have you ever been on a message or debate board? Dude, are you alive? I’m on them all the time. I love debating and arguing. Not all the time, but unless you’re not a man and stay on all the “oh, this is so … WONDERFUL” sissy sites all the time, I guess some people do. (Are you a man?)
So far half the people say it’s a copy site, and half the people say no one likes to degate? If no one likes to argue on the internet, what the hell are all the sites on arguing doing?? Let’s see, you post a message saying you hate to debate on the internet, and what are you doing?–debating! Hello! Are you going to deny this?
Anyway, checked out justifyyourself.com–questions like “Is Christianity religion?” “Which is the best University in Southern Ontario?” Lame!! How about, “Where IS Southern Ontario?” lol Go if you must…
Checked out http://www.intensedebate.com (like I said, I like to debate). Nothing up. I guess I’ll have to wait…

they didnt ‘convince me’
this service just add noise to the internet
should have been more focused.
Apparently the (supposed to be) surreal Monty Python Argument sketch has come to life. I suppose we can expect Web 2.0 companies for Abuse, Contradiction, and Complaining. Actually, check that, I am sure there are already many sites where people just complain to each other and nothing gets done. Come to think of it, a lot of the dialogue you read on the Net sounds vaguely like the whole sketch.
Q: Shut your festering gob, you tit! Your type really makes me puke, you vacuous, coffee-nosed, maloderous, pervert!!!
M: Look, I CAME HERE FOR AN ARGUMENT, I’m not going to just stand…!!
Q: OH, oh I’m sorry, but this is abuse.
M: Oh, I see, well, that explains it.
The Argument Sketch:

How is this different from a forum that uses Karma points? Seems like wrapping some arbitrary restrictions around a forum to direct conversations would be a losing proposition beyond a cursory novelty phase.
a lot of sites have sprung up off of the voting system!
I know Brett and the guys at ComvinceMe. From what I understand, there was a miscommunication between Brett and TechCrunch regarding the timing of this article. Brett knew there were bugs. Had he known this article was going to be written today, they would have been fixed.
As far as the site goes, I love it! However, I have to question the intellect of some of the debaters on the site. Superman v. Batman?? Please … Anyone who thinks that Batman could take down The Man of Steel is just plain ignorant.
Funny. It’s like blogging, but organized. “god saw the blog world, that it was full of crappy long comment threads and no one remembered who was arguing for what and the whole thing was a mess and said, let there be light, and this convinceme thing was born”. Take this thread – is convinceme.net a useful/future profitable website? aren’t you all just arguing about that point? all of you who are saying it’s a dumb website? how ironic.
Would love to offer a fourth (more like 100th) alternative. http://www.over...-underrated.com was also just relaunched (jan. 07).
It gives users ability to rate based upon percieved public opinion.
the Overrated/Underrated thing makes no sense. intensedebate.com doesnt work. Hot Soup and LovetoLead are decent, but no fun stuff like the “Fights” section in that convinceme – hilarious. Pirates and Ninjas – classic. The tough thing about that LovetoLead site is that it is also kind of too bloggish for me – it is just like a blog post, and then people comment and you can just vote for a blog article, or not. you’re not really arguing the topic. just voting for or against an article. less interactive. less control.
I can’t believe there are so many uptight meanies out there! The site is just for fun and it is fun. I liked starting debates to talk about the same things you talk about late at night in some college apartment. It’s fun and sure it’s not going to win anybody a nobel prize but is there no value is just plain old sillyness sometimes?

I find it funny with all the people saying it is dumb–then what the heck are they doing on the website. News and other things are always asking questions about different things and asking for an answer. They are always replied to by tons of people. I think it is a fun way to b.s. Aren’t most things on the internet a waste. The point is it is fun and that is all to it!!!
more precious coal and oil wasted to power another pointless “we have blank forms for you to fill in” site. so sad.
I was on the debate team for four years in high school and two years in college. It taught me each issue has two sides and that people sometimes need to argue less and listen more.
Sounds like most of these sites dont’ work, or are not up and running.
http://www.justifyyourself.com was the only site that actually was running throughout and had many arguments to choose from. There is a topic there for everyone – even some polls….
“more precious coal and oil wasted to power another pointless “we have blank forms for you to fill in” site. so sad. ”
blank forms–what’s that, three lines or so? is there a site that doesn’t have sign up? bet you have a myspace, huh? how much work did THAT take? hey, if you’re too lazy to sign up with three lines or so (for any site), you’re probably too lazy to think of anything intelligible to say–seems better for all that way…
btw, i checked out justifyyourself.com again, and couldn’t even VOTE without signing up.
Guys, we are under development. It says “coming soon.” You will be wowed soon enough.
If anyone has seen clerks you’ll find the existance of this debate hilarious.
I actually find some of the debates to be quite funny. I think some folks will go there largely for the humor in some of the responses.
Ninjas are way better than pirates. I think someone should “Ask a Ninja”.
dude, justifyyourself is just Pligg.
At 9:26 GMT, Convinceme.net is unreacheable (from Dublin, at least). It redirects to lunarpages, a hosting company. I wonder if Convinceme will be back any soon, but anyway it is so bad there is no trace of them at this point.
It’s unavailable from Minnesota, USA, too – at 7:16 a.m. Central Time. I get that lunarpages hosting company page.
SITE OFFLINE… NEED TO ADD TO LOSER SEARCH DATABASE at http://www.LoserSearch.com
Users of these sites have less of a life than SL’ers (if that’s possible).
Get a life guys!! Put your oratory and related skills to a better purpose.
May I suggest never using Lunarpages.com for a host. Turns out my dedicated IP isn’t so dedicated afterall…DNS should recognize the “new one” within the hour.
ha! This is just A RIPOFF OF
ReparateMe.com
wonder where they got the idea?
ReparateMe.com is awful. Nuff said.
ReparateMe is no where even close to the idea.
You have more adsense than you do content. Is it really worth it?
love this site. love it. can be as mindless or challenging as i’m in the mood for. great layout, too.
