<strong>SmugMug is not a Tech or Web 2.0 Company...</strong>

SmugMug is the preferred service for serious photographers. In fact, it has over 100,000 paying customers who have uploaded over 100 million photos since 2002. In addition, this company is extremely profitable; revenues exceed $10 million per year.

I am an almost-one year subscriber to SmugMug. I notice almost no commenter here mentions the user's TIME invested in creating online albums, be they with SmugMug or anyone else. MY time is valuable to me. The annual subscription fee is peanuts in comparison. My fear is not about annual fees being oppressive, as much as the possibilty of some day, logging on to SmugMug, and being greeted with a "Sorry, we are out of business now." WOW! All my hours of time in creating my many SmugMug albums would be 'down the tube'!

Don, tell me you ain't gonna let that happen!

I'm a smugmug pro user and I love it. I did my homework before signing up. Smugmug is the best bang for the buck. The newest gallery version rocks. No more page reloads.

I also have a flickr pro account and use that for completely different purposes. The custom pricing, watermarking, password protection and unlimited space are my favs.

Miller's Lab charges insane hosting prices. Others like Shutterfly Pro don't put out the quality nor do they have all the features.

I've orderd prints as large as 24x36 from smugmug.com and they're excellent.

I am a faithful Smugmug user and I absolutely love Smugmug. The tech support is awesome! I always receive an answer almost immediately. Smugmug is easy to use and I love all the extras features they offer. I have cutomized my photography website to suit my needs and I can protect my photos which I never could do as a Webshots user. (Never did like the fact that someone could download my photos and not know who that person was.)

Once I used Smugmug for a few months, I then dropped Webshots completely! I hope the guys at Smugmug never sell the company! Its the best!!!!!

I must join in this smugmug praise fest. I have used flickr - not impressed. Especially by the fact that even when you set permissions on your pics - people are still able to download them. Even though I paid a two year subscription, I ran away to smugmug and happily paid them. For a Jamaican to walk away from US dollars spent must tell you how fed up I was with Flickr!. Our exchange rate is USD1.00= J$67

Well, Flickr isn't exactly free as other commenters suggest. You're limited to a maximum of 3 "albums", and the user interface for managing photos and sets is terrible. With Smugmug, the only thing I don't like is that for $40/year the default account setting should at least keep my photos out search engine indexing. It's disturbing to see my photos and descriptions showing up on a search query with Google, for example. I had to manually set each gallery so that they don't show up on an index. I really hate hack feeds.

But, on the whole Smugmug is easier and simpler to use, a little pricey, but I think I can afford that.

Matt, thanks for the heads up on the Wordpress-plugin for displaying Smugmug photos. I was going to attempt to write one myself if someone hadn't done so already.

And, this has already been mentioned, but the customer service of Smugmug is the best I've ever seen. Every time I've contacted Smugmug I get a response literally within minutes. The most recent time was on a Saturday night at about 10:00pm Central Time (8pm Pacific) and the reply from an actual human was within minutes!

As a professional photographer, I've experimented with quite a few of the options out there. The SmugMug suite sold me about a year ago...and the recent upgrade just tickles my toes :) The product itself notwithstanding, the customer service makes me feel taken care of in a way I've never experienced with any online company. If SmugMug were a restaurant, they'd hover over you, filling your half-full water glass, scraping the crumbs from your tablecloth... They answer all emails within an hour, but more likely within minutes. Even if the person can't answer your question, they'll say so and then inform you someone else will be contacting me shortly. It's small-town, old-school service to a global community, and in my opinion is the hallmark of successful companies in the web 2.0 world, whatever the heck that means!

P.S. I have almost 40,000 photos on my smugmug site(http://goodeye.smugmug.com) and the print and digital download sales more than pay for my annual subscription, I actually make pretty decent money this way!

@mike panic Hi Mike, one other thing in addition to Don's comment to you above.... we * do not * keep customer email addresses from our pros. They get it, and in fact, we just made it easier for our pros to send photo links to their customers by email :)
Hope this helps...

I had never intended to stick with this service past the initial 14 day trial, but found, even with their previous user interface, that it was worth a go. As part of my job I have posted in and out of just about every sharing site on the Net. SmugMug, especially with the latest update, captures what I think are the best set of features and services geared for the photo-enthusiast (being me) up to the Pro Photographer (definitely not-me). I now find myself motivated enough to take on the task of consolidating my paid for service with pbase.com to Smugmug.

Great job!

Thanks for the tip on this; up to this point I hadn't even heard of SmugMug. I am playing around with it now to see how well I like it over flickr. I even found a nice Wordpress plugin for showing pictures from the various feeds SmugMug offers:

<blockquote>I’ve seen a few quotes referring to Smugmug’s “$40/month” fee. Guys it’s $40 PER YEAR.</blockquote>

Actually only $35 as referral codes are easy to find - just google it. don't worry I won't spam mine. When I signed up I used the code of one the guys who had patiently and promptly answered my stupid questions in the forum during my trial period.

Great community

@Panic

Like Don indicated about SmugMug, Pictage.com has a very strict anti-spam policy and simply rely on opt-in requirements, most often defined by our ptofessional photographers as part of the business rules they establish when joining our pro community.

I've belonged to Phanfare for over a year and just signed my business up with their services. I looked into Smugmug, but prefered the clean interface of Phanfare and its professional/ad-free albums. They constantly upgrade their services. I've uploaded over a thousand images and multiple videos to Phanfare without a hitch. After their recent upgrade of services, you can download entire albums as well as individual images. I highly recommend their service.

I think both SmugMug and Phanfare offer a lot over Flickr, especially for the professional.

@Brad Neuberg:

That looks great. I notice, though, that you don't support Safari. That was our big stumbling block, too.

But we solved it. Safari works perfectly. :)

I've used smugmug (and many other photo sites) for years. It's hands down the best site for photographers. From world-class printing services to exceptional customer service, it can't be beat.

In addition, I have a huge number of 8mb+ files in my account. Unlimited storage means unlimited storage...

if you have a web hosting account, VPS or dedicated server sitting somewhere, try Gallery 2 - http://gallery.sf.net/ - a we-based, open-source photo management platform. supports video too, the upcoming 2.2 release (still in testing) looks promising. :)

Smugsmug really did make dramatic changes are the new features are very good. I still wouldn't recommend it to pro photogs - it is targeted to beginners, or those who don't care much about selling their photos anyway.

On the other hand, if your images are GOOD (really good), you can get free unlimited storage and e-commerce features to license your work as stock photography on keenimages.com. Even though it's not in the same league as smugsmug, it makes more sense for pros.

Smugmug is good, the new interface is pretty neat. But there are other sites offering comparable service. I use Snapgalaxy (http://www.snapgalaxy.com). Apart from unlimited storage and sharing they provide great quality prints at reasonable prices (best one is 5x7 at 35 cents).
