I'm concerned about the security of it... The "secure lock" is not in the upper corner of my window.
Should I be concerned with my info being "lost" and then found by someone i don't want to find it?
Is this site in fact secure??

geni should allow users to enter a Country/location for every person, and use that information to decide the local / most appropriate language for the generic invitation email. of course, that wouldn't add much value if they didn't have multi-language websites

Oh and diggthiskids #58, I'd say you contradict yourself there. You say this would be like video sites, but go on to say google could crush all. That certainly isn't what happened with video.

Mike beat me to what I was going to say in response to #50. It might be the journalistically acceptable thing to do, but a retraction is something no one reads and is more of an insult to truth and integrity than an edit if you ask me.

I agree, there seems to be a lot of emotion on GENI, I compare it to the first online auctions. Only the one, that implements an error-free concept, wins the market.

The conceptual errors come from their assumptions on data protection, privacy rules, spamming-protection, etc. How can you make your personal data available to a easy defined group, but also change that any day ? What rules apply ?

And can you should be able to track versions, undo, etc. - similar to wikis.

Its all a bit much for the first bets.

But to begin with something implementable, I also agree with Michael on his style, correcting posts. When I come in a couple of hours later, I prefer to see the news and updates on one page, rather than jumping around many pages.

That’s really simple but valuable idea. A kind of social network built on the sibling connection. Just imagine that next step of the Web 2.0 is to interconnect different social networks. In this case we’ll have “real digital persons” with a lot of connections of different types. This will be a new many-dimensional web.

Michael, my congratulations go to the Geni people, it has a lovely interface (one of the best I've seen to date) and seems to do the family tree job as well as most. However, I even though I am obviously biased, I believe LivingMemory.com has a better family tree feature and is deals with life and personal history on a much broarder scale than Geni.

James
CEO
LivingMemory.com

PS. We launched our open Beta on Deember 24th 2006. If you are in the mood for a review we sure would appreciate it, whether it be good or bad.

this idea is too easy to replicate. the biggest dog will win. like video websites.

google can launch its own and put every one of these startups out of business. for my money, this is alpha not beta.

Staci & Justin,

Please don't assume that I take my audience for granted. I don't. It's so easy to say I don't care because the blog has gotten big. I still care about startups and entrepreneurs AND my readers and always try to do the right thing. I know it's easy not to believe that, but it's true.

I disagree Justin that a new post with a correction is the right thing to do. No one reads corrections, and the original post would still be there for people to find. The great thing about blog posts is that they can be updated with new information real time, and I do that for probably 50% of my posts. Usually it's someone giving new information in a comment. In this case it was talking to the CEO.

I changed the title because it didn't fit the corrected post, that's all.

Justin - I can't remember the post last week but the same thing happened. the title wasnt changed nor was the story edited. i guess when you are a former paypal big wig, you get the do?

There comes a point Justin when a site becomes an influential site for a community that it must adopt rules that it follows. I guess I disagree with you.

It doesn't matter as most want to be on this site so bad they would give up their first born for it. And Mike knows it.

Staci - Thanks. I'm not saying Mike *should* be following journalism rules. I personally am fine with the style and tone of reporting this blog has adopted. I'm fine with him writing about companies he's invested in, etc.

I'm just suggesting that if he wanted the snarky anonymous comments to stop, not making edits like this would be a big step towards accomplishing that. He didn't help out his case, in this instance.

i emailed them about the same sex marriage, it is allowed in the system, its just a bit awkward, you have to add a husband/wife, then hit edit and change the sex, and then it will show a same sex marriage in the options, i agree that its not the best thing but its not quite as annoying as the "add this person" when you have a single person with a kid...

#50 Justin - you are correct. I am guessing Mike only wants to be a journalist when he mentioned in another post that he wants credentials to get into an event that is "press" only.

I certainly hope that other companies get the same "do" when they disagree with a post here. When we make one change, we should expect lots of other changes too. It is good to know that Mike will edit posts when he is clearly wrong. That's a good sign.

The title "geni blew it" certainly is harsh and is meant to draw in visitors. The new "softer" title won't do that.

I am guessing Mike is on to the next post Justin so you probably won't see a reply.

#50 Justin - you are correct. I am guessing Mike only wants to be a journalist when he mentioned in another post that he wants credentials to get into an event that is “press” only.

I certainly hope that other companies get the same “do” when they disagree with a post here. When we make one change, we should expect lots of other changes too. It is good to know that Mike will edit posts when he is clearly wrong. That’s a good sign.

The title “geni blew it” certainly is harsh and is meant to draw in visitors. The new “softer” title won’t do that.

I am loving this site mostly because my family is talking to each other about all the data and information and sharing family stories and doing it all via skype and interactively. My sister and I were doing whilst I had her on skype. Then my stepmother and I were racing to see who could enter the most data. Then my father's uncle dropped by a whole load of data for me to into. Then my mother called with loads of stuff she dug up from her basement. Bringing families together. Can't think of a nobler cause!

OK, so we have had some problems with emails, and wrong data which we can't quite figure out how to fix but it is BETA. BETA BETA BETA BETA!!!!! Relax, it will get better. Remember hotmail's first release?

Michael, the correct thing to do when you make a reporting mistake (it happens to everyone) would be to write a follow-up post or run a *formal* retraction, instead of just editing the original copy. That's a big no-no. Granted blogs don't follow journalism rules (they don't really have to follow any kind of rules), but without that layer of reporting transparency, you're going to continue to get those comments that you've began deleting. And they probably won't be from the same IP.

Don't get me wrong... I like TC and I'm on "your" side, here. But the handling of this Geni editing was somewhat ill-concieved.

Great, and now I've messed up and added a spouse to the wrong person, but for some reason you can't delete people once they've been married.

Who wrote this backend, a five-year old?
