I hope Paypal has a long slow death, they have caused me no end of problems in the three years I have been with them I would also go as far to say that most of my stress derives from that god forsaken company. I hope someone sues ebay for monopolising the way they receive payments. They make you feel like a crook if you don't accept Paypal. I even had auctions closed because I accepted cash... Hang on a minute Paypal, what the f**k did we use to pay for things before PPal?? The Queens money not good enough for you now? - Go ***k yourselves & die (slowly so I can take it all in)...

And....... exhale...

Hello, Everyone:

1. What the heck is a “Roundhouse Punch”? Tommy Jefferson asks. A roundhouse punch is also known as a "haymaker" which is a long swinging punch started with the fist well below the beltline and well behind the back, then swung in a long, round arc until contact with the target's jaw. Usually kids throw roundhouse punches.

2. Man, the Google Checkout rates are considerably lower than Paypal. I'm doing a new startup business strictly online that will sell a small inventory of items that are essentially books. Those lower costs are extremely attractive especially since the business is new and not making a dime right now.

3. I'm with Free Market Economy on this one. Competition is good even if it is messy. Nothing like a schoolyard fight with roundhouse punching.

In addition, if you really look back the history of how PayPal was in the initial days, "It was awful"!!

Over years they improved to a little and i guess every product takes its time. I hope that Google does not react to PayPal and start looking at the customer/merchant needs globally. I am sure over years Checkout will improve regardless of PayPal's market share.

On my experience with Google Checkout, i never had issues. My experience has been wonderful and i got feedback forms to submit based on my experience and that would give me additional discount for purcahse from Google Checkout! I love the competition!

PayPal knew well ahead that Google was planning to release Checkout. Yet they were so lethargic that they did not want to respond to it. After Google checkout came in, then they started scrambling to redesign the UI. That was lots of effort! PayPal keeps acquring companies so that eventually they get all the large merchants and get their volume which seems to be the main strategy as opposed to having a good vision and planning. I guess with Google Checkout, they are almost pushed to react for anything Google offers. The reverse may also be true that PayPal might be pushing Google as well. May be they will soon try and capture the Airline Market and you might start seeing "PayPal" in Airlines. That is another huge ecommerce volume left. But one of the post i read earlier, most of the innovative talents left PayPal. So i dont know what talent is left there to be innovative. PayPal somehow has to get back to its way of "being innovative". Otherwise their reactive approach might not last for a long time!

However Google Checkout is a new product. So obviously it will have lots of areas for growth which is a great news! Knowing Google's innovativeness, hope they come up with everntullay a better "Alternate Payment Method" in all true sense where it could be accepted everywhere.

PayPal has been the most tiresome bunch to work with regarding the resolution of problems. Today I made my fourth attempt to get thyem to actually send me my debit card. I am part owner of a business, and my business partner got her card, but I've been waiting since last summer to get my card. Three times they've said that a new card was sent, but it never shows up. Others cards from other financial institutions show up in the P.O. Box, but PayPal............................NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oddly enough, they continually send me Emails saying that they will cancel the card if I don't call in to activate it. LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!! What card is there to activate PayPal?

I am still leary of google checkout and it is still only for the US users. For now I'll keep to Hyperwallet, who are backed by my bank and I can sign in through my bank account online. Transfers take no more than a day or two either direction. It's a nice alternative for Canadians. For those that don't use Hyperwallet I have no choice to accept Paypal right now, they are the leader and most used.

Amy,
Western Union tried very hard to make an online payments competitor to PayPal called Western Union Money Zap. Ever heard of it? There is a reason why not--it flopped like hundreds of other online payments companies.

Payments is a notoriously difficult business and online fraud in payments is way harder to control than offline CC processing. Check out this list of companies that have tried and gone out of business.
http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/pages/payment

You can go ahead and use American Express, but I guarantee you are getting gouged on the payment processing fees--they are way higher than Visa, MC, PayPal, etc, so you are paying a premium for that service and protection, especially if you are small merchant. Amex doesn't do it out of the kindness of their hearts, and most consumers don't have an Amex card.

For all of those non-US merchants in small countries. Just consider that any company needs to figure out what markets they'll get the most bang for their buck if they enable payments processing in those companies. Malaysia is priority number 1000 because it won't generate much eCommerce revenue in comparison to the UK, Germany, France, China, Korea, etc. The only reason Canada has a shot is that it's English speaking and has a very similar financial services environment to the US.

I put my money on PayPal. I simply don't think that Google has the focus to be financially successful in the highly complex, operationally intensive, and high fraud environment of online payments. Their value proposition is directly opposed to that of their merchants. After all the promotions are said and done, they will go the way of Microsoft Passport, another initiative that came from deep pockets and died a slow and painful death.

I simply couldn't get Google checkout to work--it would never accept my zip code as correct. I filled out all the forms and then--- I kept getting an error message that my zip code did not match my state. Like most Google stuff, I'm sure it was thrown out untested and then left unsupported. Who knows how long this error has been in their system uncorrected and costing them customers?

Too bad. I don't think they will provide service to my lovely sucky country, Malaysia. Here is full with fraud cheater. Anyway, it is good for google to come out a new product to hit on PayPal. I believe it will take a big slice of revenue from PayPal. Give them another 6months to 1 Year.
Keep it up, google.

At first I was really excited about using this as a promotion to our customers - an instant savings to them. But apparently this only works with selected merchants. Contrast this with how Paypal started - they gave $5 to everyone who signed up.

I would love to use google checkout, but it's not international. I can't set it up because I'm in New Zealand, and even if I could I could only sell to those in the US.

I use PayPal at the moment to accept credit card payments on my bla.st advertising website. It was really easy to set up, and integrates with my website automatically. About a 5 seconds after a person buys a card through paypal it is updated on my site.

It's still the wild wild west, everyone is grabing for market share - or falling behind.. For google (my humble opinion) it's just another stratigic play.. because even the giants [read :: MicroSoft] can be left in the burning hard drive dust of the fickled www, internet, net, web..whatever.. Cheers

I'm glad there's another option to paypal and anyone who's used paypal for a while is glad too.

Paypal is a major PITA for a LOT of things.

Google is abusing its monopoly powers to enter new markets! Oh my god! The sky is falling! Where's the DOJ?

I have heard all the horror stories about PayPal but I have used it for years without incident and I think the vast majority of people have too. If the way Google treats AdWords and AdSense customers is any indication of how they'll treat Google Checkout users, I think I'll stick with PayPal.

IMHO, Paypal is good, but I could do without the emails from a fake Paypal asking me to update my info and enter in all my data again. I wonder how many people were sucked into that scam.

Google is entering shark infested waters. They may have a lot of money to throw at it, but they could get seriously bitten in the end.

There still isn't really a lot of comparison between Google Checkout and PayPal, at least on a customer level.

As I said, whether efraud or not. Google has the human and technology resources to do it. Maybe that is why over 1300 geeks send their resumes to Google everyday. We all want to be on the winning side. Not on the other side;)

You either compete or drown. Paypal has a choice to make. Otherwise paypal days are numbered. Competition is good for America.
