Jimmy: you're right, our code is pretty separated from Firefox' code, making it easy to update the underlying Firefox code, at least for minor release. This is why we usually release minor version the same day (or the day after) Firefox' releases.

Diego: even if Flock's "stable" version is based on Firefox 1.5, we're only doing maintenance on it and actively working on a development version based on Firefox 2. You can follow the Flock blog to learn more about the schedule and have an idea of what will be released when.

Diego: Firefox is programmed on XUL. XUL is seperated completely into layers, and that's what makes firefox extensions so easy to install/uninstall... they're seperate. Flock, I'm assuming, is just a prepackaged XUL addition to Firefox.

I used to despise Flock. I thought it was a very dumb idea. Then, I gave it a second try and I have to say I'm beyond impressed. I use it as my primary browser now, as I can load all of my development extensions from Firefox, as well as take advantage of the much nicer usability and friendliness that the Flock UI provides.

How can any of you say Flock is a great idea? Yes - the concept may be worthwhile but a company that has no business plan and no way to make money can not last for long.

In a few months Flock will realize they have accept way to much VC funding and can never get back on top of their debt. Their best bet will be to alter the Gecko engine and change every AdSense pub ID to their own when a user views a page and run with the money.

I use Flock as my primary browser, I love it. I think it's innovative and considering the features, it's the best concept of a browser around.

I do think we will see it in the deadpool soon, which is a shame. They are still working on top of flawed old firefox code. I never understood how was it oing to be possible to keep a competitive browser: they will always be behind of firefox on the update part... security and such... I don't know if there can be FF wrapper layer (programatically speaking) which allows them to put any version of firefox under it... keeping up to the version of FF would be easier... but I dunno... just ranting now...

Flock, please don't die on us...

I use Flock to manage my blogs and it's a great tool for that. Plus it works with all of the Firefox add ons for the most part. It got a lot more stable with 0.7.9 so I think it will have a lot more users sticking to it over time.

I really don't know about the expectations for the revenue model, etc. But the product is great for those that need its specialized functions.

As with all products, there are always going to be people who like Flock and people who don't.

I like Flock a lot, but believe they have a huge challenge still ahead of them as a company. The social space is moving so fast -- awefully hard to develop both a sufficiently differentiated [social] browser AND an active 3rd party developer network. Maybe the changes to the team will help them get there?

Best of luck to you, Geoffrey. I will look you up next time I'm down there. Let's catch up?

Geoffrey - I see you are checking these blog comments more than your email ;-)

Seriously. Best of luck with the move.

I love Flock - it's the forward-thinking social browser - and I look forward to seeing 1.0 become a success.

I'm not one to say that a founder leaving means death for a company (one of ours left, after all). But, I've heard of several other Flockites either having left or who are about to leave. I haven't sat down with anyone yet to ask what's going on...

Could be nothing, of course, but could be something up in Flockland.

For anyone worried about Flock... don't.

Flock is doing great and as Geoffrey says is full steam ahead. We (www.piczo.com) just announced a strong partnership with Flock (http://www.techcrunch.com/tag/Piczo/ ) and are really excited to launch the Flock Piczo edition browser. Flock 1.0 is going to be great and we're very confident in the Flock team as they gear up to launch.

The best of luck to Geoffrey. We're really excited for him as well in his new ventures!

Best,
Jeanine

"How come VC’s continue to work with the people from companies who have failed. Just doesn’t make sense. "

Did it occur to you that maybe it didn't fail? Flock is still very strong and the best is yet to come. Geoffrey is a stand-up guy who did some great things at Flock, there will always be thousands of doors open at a thousand companies for somebody like Geoff.

All these Flock bashers are the same people who bash Microsoft for being closed and proprietary, so out comes an open source company doing great work for the community and it still gets bashed. You can't please the idiots!

I do not understand why people are so negative here? Flock is a great idea and a tremendous effort. So all these words are simply ridiculous.

Okay, it might not be perfect and it has ways to evolve, but Firefox itself has recognized the need to be "Information Broker" and help channel the user data between services, so Flock's vision is fundamentally correct.

It is painful to see people rejoice over challenges at startups. Instead of this, we should be saluting the courage and innovation.

This sounds pretty standard.... Founders don't always stick around while the company has moved into execution mode.

However, I've always felt that Flock had made all the classic mistakes. Too much money, poor focus on execution, miscommunication with the market, and lack of major consumer demand.

Hope I'm wrong of course...... we'll see ...... I don't know anything about their financials of course.

I really get a kick out of all the people saying this is the end of Flock, considering that Arone is still going to be working with Flock once he's at Bessemer, and new people are joining the Flock team all the time.

I was a FireFox loyalist, but decided to try Flock because of it's integration of Photobucket & Flickr....I haven't looked back. I still love Firefox, and it's fantastic, but it's seriously lacking in the web 2.0 integration and optimization. Flock has already integrated so much into the core browser, and intends to do more, and yet still allows for add-ons. Frankly, I don't see why anyone would assume it's diving for the deadpool.

In my opinion, there is only one problem with Flock, and that's the inability to nest bookmarks, which is supposed to be changed in Flock 1.0.

If it's headed for the deadpool, then bloody hell, it's going to make one heck of a splash when it dives in.

In my opinion, there is only one problem with Flock, and that’s the inability to nest bookmarks, which is supposed to be changed in Flock 1.0.

If it’s headed for the deadpool, then bloody hell, it’s going to make one heck of a splash when it dives in.

I do not understand how anyone could bashes a _free_ application that adds _value_ to the Firefox platform. Flock still has all of the features that makes people use FF in the first place.

Everyone is surrounding this project like buzzards in the sky. Why? At this very moment, I believe Flock is more stable than the 5-20 segfault a day Firefox 2.x release.

The beginning of the end... it's been long overdue Flock. Long overdue.

It's one of those opportunities you can't pass us up on. Flock is doing some exciting exciting things right now, and it has already changed the way I blog (making it easier and more frequent), the way i've shared pictures (same thing again), and those two things were more than enough to hook me, so I'm pumped to see what comes out in version 1.

That's good to hear that things are going in the right direction at Flock. I have tried really hard to like it, but it just doesn't feel quite right. Well, I look forward to seeing what the project has to offer. And good luck to Geoffrey in the future :)

Alaska, sorry you don't like Flock. I know I am exceedingly biased here, but I urge you to give it a try again in a few months. We have been doing a tremendous amount of user testing and have been working hard to address the feedback we have been getting. We have plenty of runway and partners that are eager to distribute once we get the product buttoned up, so I suspect we will not be dipping our toes in the deadpool any time soon. However, I think it is important to peer into the deadpool every now and again to see where one may end up if they don't listen to their customers. I am confident that Flock is making all the right decisions now to ensure that that will not happen. Cheers, Geoffrey
