Facebook Mobile - Social Networking to Go...

So I’ve mentioned recently that Facebook seems to be gathering new users in their 30s at a rapid pace the past few weeks. I guess we’re old enough that a lot of us didn’t catch on instantly, but wired enough that it’s spreading...

[...] Big social-networking sites like Facebook continue to announce mobile features, but most of them seem to be focused on sending as many messages as possible to mobile users, which isn’t all that compelling. That, or they go the MySpace route and go after operator-exclusive deals — is it just me, or are deals that limit who can use your services a little antithetical to building social networks? Anyhow, all these moves by the big companies seem to ignore the fact that mobile phones are intrinsically social-networking tools, and their services should be made to fit mobile, not the other way around. In any case, I’m not convinced that people necessarily want or need access to their MySpace account from their phone; they’re more interested in sharing their experiences, and the media they make from them, particularly to other mobile devices. So watch for media sharing apps and services to thrive this year, while big-name social-networking stutters on mobile. [...]

I just spent a few minutes using the mobile page and have to say I'm really impressed. I think the most significant value comes form the "Contacts" section. If my Facebook Friends have listed their e-mail addresses and/or cell phone numbers, I can look them up very quickly through this dynamic address book. And thanks to my phone's ability to hot-link e-mail addresses and phone numbers, I get click-to-call or click-to-write from there.

Significantly, it also allows you manage your events easily, if you use that feature. It's an easy way to get up-to-date event information while you are en route if it becomes necessary.

stu: I heard the same thing. Marissa Mayer and Mark Zuckerburg have been seen getting pretty chummy at some of the clubs in the South Bay and I even heard that Mark wouldn't take a call from Bill Gates about a possible buyout this past week because he was with Marissa on one of her week long vacations. Google insiders have hinted that when he buys Google, they're going to rename the Google party plane "The Zuck."

As someone alluded to here, the mobile web version of Facebook (m.facebook.com) was previously only available on Cingular. The change today is that anyone can get to it - at least, I'm now able to on my Verizon phone. I've using the SMS service and mobile uploads for some time, but this is the first time I've been able to actually access the site via my phone.

"I don’t think that going mobile raises Facebook’s value. I think that today, every site that respects itself should have a decent mobile interface.
This is especially essential after the announcement of the iPhone, something that will make online surfing more trendy". - Yohay

Well said Yohay...but I would want to see sites built for the mobile web instead of force-feeding a PC based site on to a 3.5 inch screen.

Word on the street is that with this launch Facebook is now looking for $14-$16 billion. They plugged some mobile industry projections into Yahoo's proprietary spreadsheet software and mobile should create at least $750 million in revenues from Facebook by 2015.

Mobile Mixtape swapping anyone?

RadioMixtape.com to create, listen and purchase mixtapes,

MixBox.mobi to swap them from your phone

I just started using m.facebook.com, it's damn good! MySpace should be worried (all of those custom "pimped" profiles have got to start looking like extra baggage to them, while facebook gets to extend their reach without breaking their visual theme). I really think a two device approach is the way to go.
