Facebook Goes Mobile

Facebook announced a bunch of mobile features today, although all of them have been around for some time. The only new feature is the Facebook mobile page which lists all of the mobile tools in one place. The tools include a mobile optimized website at m.facebook.com, an easy way to upload photos and notes to facebook via SMS and MMS messages, and a tool to receive new Facebook messages on your phone via SMS.

Our previous Facebook coverage is here.

who cares if “Brian Howenstein” added ‘The Dark Tower” to his favorite books? Facebook on mobile is a waste of time. IMHO

I’ve had this on my facebook for months.. i don’t know why it’s news now. I’ve been using facebook mobile for about a month and it’s pretty sweet.

This is worth 3.5 billion dollars I say

Cingular had Facebook mobile for a while. I thought it was silly they didn’t open it up for VZW testing since then. I will complain to Zuckerberg when he comes to school in a few weeks, perhaps.

no…face book is like $10B baby.

I don’t think that going mobile raises Facebook’s value. I think that today, every site that respects itself should have a decent mobile interface.
This is especially essential after the announcement of the iPhone, something that will make online surfing more trendy.

    Mobile Mixtape swapping anyone?

RadioMixtape.com to create, listen and purchase mixtapes,

MixBox.mobi to swap them from your phone

I just started using m.facebook.com, it’s damn good! MySpace should be worried (all of those custom “pimped” profiles have got to start looking like extra baggage to them, while facebook gets to extend their reach without breaking their visual theme). I really think a two device approach is the way to go.

Word on the street is that with this launch Facebook is now looking for $14-$16 billion. They plugged some mobile industry projections into Yahoo’s proprietary spreadsheet software and mobile should create at least $750 million in revenues from Facebook by 2015.

word on the streets is that with this announcement, facebook plans on acquiring google in Q2 of this year.

Well said Yohay…but I would want to see sites built for the mobile web instead of force-feeding a PC based site on to a 3.5 inch screen.

As someone alluded to here, the mobile web version of Facebook (m.facebook.com) was previously only available on Cingular. The change today is that anyone can get to it - at least, I’m now able to on my Verizon phone. I’ve using the SMS service and mobile uploads for some time, but this is the first time I’ve been able to actually access the site via my phone.

oh well. There goes my date ;)

stu: I heard the same thing. Marissa Mayer and Mark Zuckerburg have been seen getting pretty chummy at some of the clubs in the South Bay and I even heard that Mark wouldn’t take a call from Bill Gates about a possible buyout this past week because he was with Marissa on one of her week long vacations. Google insiders have hinted that when he buys Google, they’re going to rename the Google party plane “The Zuck.”

    Drama, recycled rumors… that’s old news :)

whats the point of this? who really browses websites from your phoe, and why would you need to browse facebook? pretty dumb. sites like groovr and dogeball are much better and more useful.

I just spent a few minutes using the mobile page and have to say I’m really impressed. I think the most significant value comes form the “Contacts” section. If my Facebook Friends have listed their e-mail addresses and/or cell phone numbers, I can look them up very quickly through this dynamic address book. And thanks to my phone’s ability to hot-link e-mail addresses and phone numbers, I get click-to-call or click-to-write from there.

Significantly, it also allows you manage your events easily, if you use that feature. It’s an easy way to get up-to-date event information while you are en route if it becomes necessary.

WOW!!! That’s me on the image!

    I made TechCrunch!
