EroShare - User Generated Porn
by Michael Arrington on January 1, 2007

What better way to ring in the new year than with a site that is most definitely not work safe. Eroshare is to Flickr what PornoTube is to YouTube - user generated porn. The site, which launched an hour ago, encourages users to upload their home made erotic photos, and there is already a bunch of content on the site. EroShare gives 2 GB of free storage with every account and has all the standard photo site bells and whistles - friends, tagging, albums, etc. Eroshare is based - where else - in the Netherlands, and has not yet raised any funding.

Porn obviously continues to be a lucrative Internet business, and user generated stuff is apparently a healthy category if PornoTube’s growth is any indication. Just realize that the innocent photo you took with your boyfriend, girlfriend, ex-spouse or random stranger may very quickly end up in front of millions.

Good morning, Michael.

I see that you and your readers have been pretty busy at the keyboards since I turned in for some shut-eye last night.

And yes; I would welcome the opportunity to do a guest post on TechCrunch.

You have my e-mail address; let me know if your offer to do so was sincere.

ps. Hard to believe but true–many “people like us” have now even learned how to use a computer. :-)

Steve, I hope you’re not Catholic…

MySpace is not all that much different with exception to the really racy parts of the body being covered.

“Daughters–women in general–are harmed by pornography.”

No.

Yes, women are misrepresented and degraded in SOME pornography. I’m certainly not going to say there’s absolutely nothing out there that takes a chauvinistic, borderline-abusive stance against women. It’s out there, and it’s cheap and exploitative.

And the discerning porn viewer will pass it by.

Porn does not create its audience. It’s created FOR an audience - and while it is a problem that degrading porn exists, it WOULDN’T exist if there weren’t viewers out there who follow that line of thinking and want to see it played out.

Yes, there’s terrible awful degrading pornography out there. No, pornography on the whole isn’t terrible and awful and degrading.

Ross Brown: how is pointing out a proven fact xenophobic? Do a search for information about child porn busts. This is one area that time and time again international law enforcement *cooperates* on. You state:

“And, er, on what grounds can a foriegn law enforcement agency come after the citizen of another country if no laws in their native land have been broken?”

Maybe your reading comprehension isn’t that great. I never suggested that the FBI would be able to go over to the Netherlands or Austria and get to the EroShare guys (although the US can charge foreign citizens with crimes in absentia - a lot of countries do this regularly). But child pornography is illegal in just about every country and the EU is no exception. And the EU and US have frequently worked together on busts. Therefore the point I was clearly making is that if the United States believed this site to be facilitating the transfer and sharing of illegal content like this, you could reasonably expect the EU to work with the US on the investigation and prosecution of any crimes. When it comes to this stuff, you don’t need to spend special forces to whisk away the accused; law enforcement in most countries will typically work together to enforce laws which are very common. How about this: do some research and find a list of countries where this content is legal and/or the law is not enforced. Then compare it the countries EroShare is operating out of. Then explain how they can feel protected if they don’t do the right thing and make sure their service is policed.

Eric: apparently reading comprehension is really down this week. No problem. I understand that all the alcohol consumption the past few days can take its toll. I was advising Florian, who apparently owns EroShare, to get an attorney. I was not talking to Michael, who I know is an attorney.

What a great idea! Porn pays!!!!!

For those of you that are ok with the professionally produced porn with 2 “consenting” adults. I think I should point out that the majority of the women who are in these porno films where they are “consenting” were physically abused either by a family member or friends growing up and I’m pretty sure they were not “consenting” then.

This is fact. If you argue this fact you are a fool and should do some research on the subject.

So I guess the next time you read about a young girl getting sexually abused you should cheer because in about 10 years you will have another girl to jack off to.

These are the things you need to think about beyond whether you think its wrong or right or whatever religious beliefs you have. The next time you go to watch this stuff just think there’s a good chance the girl in the film was physically abused growing up. But I guess if you go to your computer or TV to rub one out while watching smut you probably won’t care about that fact.

SD Chris

Which sites do you run or what movies have you produced?

gonzo,

Not sure if your question is just a joke but obviously NONE.

This is the norm for roughly 80% of the women in the porn industry…

“The sex industry uses and spits out the most vulnerable people: women, children. Jenna Jameson, the most famous porn star of them all, was the victim of gang rape and of a husband who acts more like a pimp. Linda Marchiano (Lovelace), was raped, beaten and tortured by her ‘husband’, and compelled to make the film Deep Throat, which is still shown on TV today.” - Blog Entry

“Well, I grew up in a small town in Ohio , and when I was 10 years old, I was raped by a high school boy that was about 16. And from there, my mother had an older boyfriend that molested me, so my entire childhood was really shaped by these really traumatic sexual experiences, which ultimately led me to the streets of Hollywood and to porn.”

-Traci Lords, in a Fox News interview

So you pro-porn people out there. The next time you hear about a young girl getting abused stand up and cheer because you may have your next porn star…at least you have about an 80% chance.

Well, after reading all 160 comments. I’m going to try to sum up what I have to say.

Now the title of this article is “Euroshare - User Generated Porn” On the Euroshare site it says “Euroshare - share your erotics” Well to be erotic you don’t have to be naked. (I think a girl dressed the right way is more erotic than any girl naked.) So the only reason this became an argument about porn is because Micheal knew the title would attract attention. (Great job Micheal!)

“Porn is evil” uh okay Lets take your argument that all porn is evil because some people are forced into doing it. (I’m only taking facts, not opinions that its degrading, I know women who love porn and don’t think its degrading at all, and to some its shown that they can be empowered more than they ever thought. But that’s just some opinions.) Well If the fact that porn is evil because some people (minor and adult) are forced into it then RELIGION is evil because some priests decided to sexually abuse the alter boys. Not to mention Holy Wars where religion encourages people to kill others because they’re different. Or religions where you’re beaten if you don’t conform. POLITICS is evil because some polititions decided to abuse pages. The MEDIA is evil because they tell us about all these things and a bunch of people would have no idea any of it was going on if it wasn’t for the media.

But That’s not the way I think. (Okay television news IS evil..) Porn wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t a market for it. Neither would anything else. But the ability for people to think and decide things for their selves is what distinguishes us from mindless drone insects. (I could insert an opinion here about religion)

I agree that the debate with the people who are suck on the religious viewpoints is impossible. (From my experience) They can’t accept someone else’s point of view or opinion that isn’t conforming to their own. They can only try to change that view or opinion so that it somewhat matches with their’s.

Of course the rest arn’t any better by keeping the debate going. (neither am I)

Not so much adverstisment but no so much content. Quality content, but only a lot of dicks :(

As someone in the business of selling pornography, I’d like to point out the inherent stupidity of the idea that you support illegal porn (the semi-mythical stuff supposedly made at gunpoint in darkest Russia somewhere by evil porn werewolf enslavers) when you buy or sell or promote legal porn (the stuff they churn out in California).

Porn is just a product, like any other product. If you’re concerned about the quality of the product, or its conditions of manufacture, you arrange for a tour of the factory. If you’re worried about sweat shop tennis shoes, you buy tennis shoes from a source with a good reputation for fair labor practices. You don’t say “Don’t buy tennis shoes — every time you buy a tennis shoe, you’re supporting sweat shops, no matter where *your* tennis shoe comes from.”

That would be stupid.

I’ve written about this in more detail at the following link (yes, there’s porn visible there too):

http://www.erosblog.com/2005/1.....-debunked/

I look forward to the day when the majority of Americans can handle the image of a naked body or two without pangs of self-righteous indignation and outrage kicking in. It’s the human body. We all have one. And most of us have sex.

Time to move on to more important things, you know, like the 200,000 or so dead Iraqi civilians who cant have sex or look at porn anymore. Freedom is on the march, my ass.

I was starting to agree with you mike (#165), but you lost me on the second paragraph. Oh well.

SD Chris
It was no joke. And Your book reports are hardly research into the backend of the industry.

You really dont get out much do you?

I have no desire to debate you in a comments section on a tech blog. Your welcome [and the rest of you / pro or con porn] to debate the issue over on Oprano.com.

In the meantime Ill continue to charge your credit card each month as you secretly yet furiously masterbate while your wife is asleep in the next room.

I appreciate your business.

PS M. Arrington…I enjoy this blog and we selectively link to your posts that are of interest at Oprano.

I’m going to just be honest here, and my thoughts.

Firstly, I like porn. I’m a man, and I like to see women naked. Shoot me? I rarely meet any man that doesn’t.

Secondly, I don’t see anything wrong with porn. We’re not talking rape videos or child pornography, we’re talking about consensual adults posting pictures of themselves on the internet.

If you don’t like it, don’t visit the sites. Don’t enter dirty words into your Google search box.

Some people have linked this with child pornography, child pornography is illegal for the same reasons we have an age of consent. To protect children from things they perhaps can’t fully understand and are not in a position to fully comprehend and consent to. Hence, to link this with child pornography makes no sense, as none of those reasons apply here.

As to whether Michael should post about start ups such as Eroshare and PornoTube, of course he should. If he wants to, feels it relevant, then he has every right to and it do not forget you are reading this page out of choice.

Religion should not intrude in the ways it has been here.
Those committed to religion are in love with their God/s and ideas, and love is blind.

Hey Mike,

This idea seems relatively old to me. You may want to check out (and perhaps) profile a site…

tangotime dot com.

They are a similar site that encourages users to upload their amateur photos and videos, in hopes of winning the weekly prizes for … best in category.

I will say that traffic to MY site has increased just from posting on here earlier - guess some have thought my site led to another site - I’ve got NOTHING to do with porn on my site… if that doesn’t say something…

Steve Macdonald and Garbage might be highly please. I indeed seem to be doing something that god has not intended for us humans to do and he is punishing me by striking me with all his fury. I have caught a cold.
I hope god intended for us to develop medication or I’m really .. ehm.. layed.

That site sucks, check out http://www.pussyupload.com it gets 84 000 hits per day and climbing, plus that site was done at about the same time as eroshare bs.

This sure was a fun post after all mike, revelations here and there, feuds, fights..

will click from the feed more often now.

;)

Despite what one may think of porn, its worth watching what the industry does as it is a fairly large (and profitable) niche that has been at the forefront of many comms revolutions before Web 2.0

Having said that, I don’t really see a difference between this one and sites such as voyeurweb etc - in fact, user (de?)generated porn and adult chat groups were “2.0″ a long, long time before MySpace, Flickr and YouTube.

If one raelly wants to see the future in embryo today its probably more useful to look at what the pornos on 2nd Life et al are up to imho

@Jed 142

Me: “These people believe that anybody whose views differ from their own are wrong (fair enough) and must have their opinions changed (not fair enough).”

You: ‘Wrong. Nice straw man. Next.’

I’m sorry, precisely what straw am I grasping here. I don’t mind entering into intelligent debate with people but if you’re accusing me of something, I’d like, well, detail of your objections rather than vagaries.

‘If you’re seeking intelligent discussion, stop incorporating logical fallacies all over the place. How do you expect people to argue with you if you’re misinterpreting their positions?

It’s weak, lame, and absurd.’

Again, I fail to see any contrary viewpoint being expressed. Logical fallacies? Isn’t Christianity based entirely on faith? Isn’t your objection to pornography in general based on your Christian faith? Therefore, what fallacy am I propogating or position am I misrepresenting?

Ross

@ Drama 2.0 Message 157

“Maybe your reading comprehension isn’t that great.”

It is apparently much better than your writing composition; at no point in your message to which I responded did you mention you were discussing child porn. Indeed, your message and those either side merely referred to porn in general - which is (mostly) legal across the EU.

If you had made reference to child porn then I wouldn’t have had to make my point.

If you’re going to be rude to and about people, then ensure you’re standing on firmer ground.

Ross

Interesting. Now they can wait till their site also goes offline like youporn ^^.

I can’t get the image of a nake Scoble and his wife out of my mind. Someone help.

Interesting site…just chked the homepage..in office right now .can’t wait to go home & register

wow, a porn site, how innovative. another nugget from TC, thanks.

Too much gay porn in Google!

Do you really believe most of the, so called, user generated porn sides are authentic? To our knowledge, there is hardly anything like this around. An outstanding example, however, is http://www.private-voyeurs.org. That’s really true, authentic and legal outdoor sex voyeur movies along with even more information. Try it out.
