I think Bob Pack is right... the whole site is almost the same, I mean the ideas... though this one is better.. for me..

[...] WikiSeek will undoubtedly be confused with the recently announced Wikiasari search engine that was announced by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales last month. In fact, in our original post on Wikiasari, we included a screenshot that we later learned was not a prototype of Wikiasari. We later corrected that post, and asked “the Wikisearch Screenshot Isn’t Wikiasari, So What Is It?” It was actually an early WikiSeek prototype, then called WikiSearch. Question answered.
Hey James,

Yes, this is truly sad news. Ownership of wiki.com has likely been handed back to Dynamo.com. And I was so looking forward to running “vaporware.wiki.com!” ;-)

Here's another somewhat-related recent development from the 'huh?' files.

Remeber wiki.com, the domain John Gotts optioned at $3 million? The front page was down for a bit and now redirects to wikia:

Seth, Wales is correct and so is Robert - don't confuse Wikisearch with Wikiasari, they are two different projects.

Wikiasari (probably not what it will be called) is Jimmy's vision for a community powered search engine and has not yet been developed and is still in the concept stage - it is also not a commercial product - will definitely be open source.

Wikisearch, on the other hand, was developed by and is a trademark of Searchme, Inc. (a Sequoia company) using a totally new search technology. Searchme will launch this service (it is a search engine for Wikipedia and External Links) in January. SearchMe and Wikia have a contractual agreement to donate the majority of the revenue from Adsense ads on WikiSearch to the Wikimedia Foundation. This is a commercial product created to help raise funds for the Wikimedia Foundation with the approval and cooperation of Wikia. WikiSearch is community driven in the sense that it indexes only pages external to Wikipedia which have been selected and approved by the community as External links but it is not what Jimmy is envisioning for the future.

#20 Inside sources confirm that Google search was not used - it is an entirely new engine and index - the tag cloud is actually a list of vertical Wikipedia categories that lead the searcher into a vertical search engine with more relevant results - quite different.

Wikisearch is just a working name for a project which searches Wikipedia and the sites linked from it. It's something Wikia is testing (see Wikisearch Feedback), but is not a Wikia project. Wikiasari was the name of a very old Wikia search project and is not what the new Wikia search project will be called. I blogged about this a month ago at wikiangela.com.

It's a different project. See this public list message soliciting beta-testers:

"We're still looking for some more beta testers for Wikisearch. I can
now share some more information about this. The search engine is being
developed to search Wikia, Wikipedia, and all sites that are linked to
from Wikipedia. If this search engine is released, Wikia will donate
51% of the revenue made from advertising on the service to the
Wikimedia Foundation. This isn't a Wikimedia project but we hope it
will be useful to people who use both Wikia and Wikipedia."

It says right here that Wikiasari is the name of the software that runs the Wikia search:

http://search.wikia.com/index.php?title=search:Wikiasari&oldid=705

Wikia is just the wiki hosting service formerly known as Wikicities.
