I enjoy Blockbuster's on line rental. I pay $17.00 a month and I receive three movies at a time. I watch them on the weekend normally, return them to the Store on Sunday and by Tuesday I have three more movies, along with the three I received free from the store. All in all I watch 6 movies a weekend, 24 a month, for $17.00. The new releases are always a pleasure to receive, and the store in my town has a lot of movies to choose from, the new releases are normally gone, as soon as they come out, but that is because you know when they are coming out.

You don't have to leave Netflix to get the new releases, but you had to figure out there method, First you have to keep a list of new release movie In your one, two, three etc, etc., spots long before they are released, So It's very Important that you keep a well stocked "Saved" listing. Then' as soon as you see the released date In said section' and Netflix bumps said movie to your listings (they will be entered at the end of your regular list) move them into your one, two, three etc, etc., positions, Upfront of all your marked "Now" entries. this way when one of said new movie's Is set to be released' .... Oh' lets say that wed. you have to send one of the movies you have at home back In time to reach Netflix, the day before, In this case That would tue. There was a time when It only had to be there the same the movie was released. Didn't you wonder why the day before the release dates Netflix, was posting "Short & Long Waits" next to the movie? ...... Well' here I go again, trying to be of some help, Now that you All know how to beat the system, think of me' as I'm using a Web-Tv, unit not a Pc. so you know what kind of troubles I run Into. since Netflix, went JavaScript.

I'm wondering how the launch of NetFlix's WatchNow program have affected your decision.

Netflix is definitely still a big contender, and depending on how quickly they grow this new section, they could easily dominate the market.

[...] These days it feels like an arms race in the battle of the movie rental companies, Netflix vs. Blockbuster. In December, Mike Arrington wrote why he was breaking up with Netflix, and I quickly got hip to the what Blockbuster was rolling out. I’m sure you’ve heard Alec Baldwin explaining how in addition to DVD’s through the mail, you can return your DVD’s directly to Blockbuster and get another rental on the spot.
I'm having major frustrations with the Total Access program as well. I switched to it from Netflix because I didn’t like how it took netflix anywhere from 2 to 5 days to recieve the movies I mailed out. I always thought it odd that when they shipped a DVD I got it the next day but when I mailed my DVD back it always took much longer for them to recieve. I didn’t care so much so that I could get a free in store rental, although that is pretty cool, I cared more so that if I returned the online rental to the store that the next movie would ship right away. Fact of the matter is if I return an online rental to the store it takes anywhere from 2 to 5 days for the next movie to ship anyway. For example, today is tuesday, I returned a movie to my local Blockbuster store last friday. Not only has the next DVD still not shipped out but the one I returned on friday has been removed from my que indicating that it has already been mailed out from the blockbuster store and recieved in the wherehouse. I’m on the 2 DVD rental program and right now it’s indicating that I only have one DVD shipped. And to add to the frustration that one DVD in my que I already returned to a Blockbuster store yesterday morning.

And yes I called their customer service center to complain. Their number was busy the majority of the times I tried to call and when I did get through the wait time was 22 minutes. The lady on the phone offered to send me a free in store rental coupon which I declined because that really offers me no solution to the true problem of the DVD’s shipping right away. I never use my in store coupons anyway because I don’t want to rent movies from the store because it’s a pain for me to return them on time. The only other thing she could offer me was a futal attempt to adjust my expectations. That kind of ticked me off.

To test to make sure that the people in the store are scanning my DVD’s that i’ve been returning i’ve been renting a movie in the store with the DVD return and just dropping the in store DVD in the return slot on the way out. That hasn’t helped.

So due to all this I intend on canceling my blockbuster account and going back to netflix not just because of these problems alone, but because i’ve had 3 DVD’s at the top of my que that haven’t shipped due to being on short wait availability. All these problems combined have caused blockbuster to be a much worse service for me than Netflix. Worst thing is I know that I could complain all day and all night to them and it would yield no result. Trust me I really really want what blockbuster says they’re offering. But they are promising something that they clearly are failing to deliver.

i could never get into the snail mail part of netflix. but with talk of Verisign trying to do some big movie distribution/network thing, i thought i'd give a shout-out to CinemaNow, whose software is a pain in the ass to install, using IE, (all Flash plugin nonsense) but once it's going, it's completely painless to rent and watch a movie. it's super high-quality - just dope. I just watched Chariots of Fire for the 18,000,000th time.

I started with Netflix about two years ago. Like many others, I was happy with the speed of the service and selection . . . at first, anyway. After a few months, however, the delivery turnaround slowed down significantly. It was a busy time for me, with less time to watch movies, and I let this go on for quite a while. When I finally gained more free time, I started looking into the problem and reading blogs discussing "throttling and other issues.

I decided to try Blockbuster online.

Over the years I've been a devoted hater of Blockbuster. They've always had Big Brother policies of keeping certain movies out of their stores (not necessarily porn, but anything rated NC17 and anything that self-appointed public censors complained about), which in my opinion is c-*-n-s-*-r-s-h-*-p. Their rental fees and late fees were incredible ripoffs. They had a so-what attitude in response to any complaints.

Even so, I suspected that Netflix was putting a good dent in Blockbuster's bottom line, and the competition might have forced BB fix a few problems.

So I did a side by side comparison for nine months.

Over that time, Blockbuster improved its plan, Netflix didn't. Yes, recommendations from both suck and so far, Blockbuster's sucked the most. Yes, Netflix averages about a day faster on overall turnaround. But the additional instore rental option allows me to browse new movies and pick up anything I might want on the spur of the moment. And even if both services "throttle" (I'm certain they do) I doesn't stop me from getting over 20 videos a month — 3 at a time — if I want.

In the end, I kept Blockbuster's.

What I'd really like is for these two behemoths to keep battling away with each other, on fairly even footing. It will increase value to the customer. So I might just switch back to Netflix at a later date.

one thing nobody has mentioned is that (as i understand it) you have to maintain your annual membership fee to be able to rent the in-store movies. so if you add together the TA monthly fee and your annual fee divided by 12, it's more expensive than Netflix.
however, i do occasionally like to go to BB when i am in the mood for something specific, or just want to browse.

I have never had a problem with Netflix, but Blockbuster always wanted to charge you up the wazoo for returning a movie one minute late. With Netflix I don't have to worry about making a trip to the nearest Blockbuster in order to return the video after a day at the office. So Blockbuster incorporating the nearest store in the equation does not interest me, because that it the problem that I was having with getting the videos back in time, in the first place.
