Jaxtr Widget Lets Social Networkers Chat On Real Live Phones

jaxtr_logo.jpgA company called jaxtr, which launches in private beta today, allows users to connect their personal phone to their digital personality.

Jaxr is a widget that users can put into their social networking sites or blogs. When someone has a jaxtr widget, it means you can call them in real-time. Jaxtr members assign a specific number to their widget.

When a caller sees that widget, they can click it and jaxtr will ask them for their own phone number. The caller’s phone will ring, and when the caller picks up, jaxtr will ring the recipient who originated the widget. If the recipient was not available, jaxtr will notify them that they have a voicemail that they can access by calling into their jaxtr service.

jaxtr_screen1.jpgFortunately, jaxtr never discloses the call recipient’s phone number so you can install a widget without ever exposing personal information. Users can also block callers or specify on a per-caller basis which callers can reach them live and which get routed to voice mail. The service is free but local phone rates apply.

With the launch of jaxtr’s beta, the company also announced that LinkedIn co-founder Konstantin Guericke has joined the company as chief executive officer.

“There is nothing less satisfying than creating a social network page or blog and not getting a response,” said Guericke. “Social networks are a catalyst for people to meet, and jaxtr ‘jacks up’ the power of networks to help users make new connections. By putting a widget on their social network page or blog, jaxtr users can hear from callers worldwide on their existing landline or mobile phone.”

I have to say, I don’t always find it unsatisfying to blog and not get a response. There are several responses to my posts that I could certainly live without. But I can see the value of phone calls within social networking - especially considering how much of a meat market MySpace can be.

To request a beta membership, visit jaxtr’s Web site, which goes live on Thursday morning.

There are lots of competitors in this space, of course. We wrote about a few of them here.

    Hi,

you have given the jaxtr link wrongly as this (www.jaxtr.com.jaxtr/)

    just want to mention

    rgds,
    quicksnap

  2. Fashion Industry Ceo

soon enough…we will be able to eat, sleep, drive, talk, dream, walk, and etc…..all from our computer!….to me some of these new companies are just unnecessary

  3. SearcH EngineS WeB

( http://www.jaxtr.com.jaxtr/ ) this link probably should be just http://www.jaxtr.com/

which is now a private log-in. Fix it before the launch, because you will have a lot of frustrated DIGGers

  4. Daniel Scocco

jaxter? sounds kinda boring in my opinion…

  5. antonio

There are several consumer click to call companies with no real business models that will ultimately fizzle and die–good luck competing with skype and others!

  6. E O F

If one wants to hear from his audience why can’t one simply put his/her phone number and email address on their web page?
That’s it. They get jaxtered. Or maybe i am not understanding the purpose of the widget.

  7. elias kai

    404 jaxtr not working

  8. Jason Alba

Interesting - this is right on the heels of Skype announcing no more free outbound PC-to-Phone for 2007 :(

As a website operator (JibberJobber.com), Jaxtr could solve customer support issues in an easy, integrated way.

  9. Adrian Keys

Great…now these guys are not so big yet but have the chat link…just great! Skype on the other hand is much bigger but but needs to establish themselves as social networking site.

Do I hear deal….or no deal??

Have an Identity and a means to connect but also ermain annonymous , double whammy.

  11. TechTalk

so I can put any number in as the one to connect to? So if I find my brother-in-law’s jaxter on myspace I can place a call between him and his ex-wife? or make my paranoid coworker start ‘receiving’ confusing phone calls from the local FBI office? mmmmm, maliciousy goodness awaits!

  12. PrivaStyle

So how would this work in a dating site?
Can users enter in their own information and talk kind of like an instant
    messenger except via jaxtr?

Not too sure how this would work.

  13. Jack

Looks like DialPad is getting its 2.0 comeback!

  14. Rational Beaver

TechTalk hit the nail on the head. This didn’t work for Google (due to the volume of prank calls) and it won’t work for Jaxter for the same reason.

  15. anonymouse

wow, I’d totally pay $20 a month for this.

  16. sam

    #11/#14…

you know.. just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!!! this (in my humble opinion) is one of these things that a couple of engineers build, without ever checking to determine the viability.

but i look forward to future lawsuits as someone gets swamped by someone using this as a prank…

as i understand it.. couldn’t someone essenstially create a ‘bot’ to use/call someone 1000’s of times using one of these widgets…

    where’s the real biz model/value?

i mean hell, half the sites i see, don’t have adaquate contact numbers as it is!!

as someone pointed out, if someone wanted you to call, it’s pretty easy to place your phone number on the page.

    peace!

  17. Michael Cerda

Rational Beaver and TechTalk got it right. That’s why Jangl requires callers to verify their phone number the first time in. If you’re protecting someone’s privacy, then you gotta protect someone’s privacy.

In addition, we’ve learned that the double blind call thing is klunky for consumers. Prior models have learnt us that lesson already. That’s why when you click a Jangl widget, you get a phone number. And you can use that number again in the future. People know how to use the phone, so that needs to be leveraged.

    (I’m w/ Jangl so I’m biased).

WORTHLESS POST. SOMEBODY FIRE Natali Del Conte. TC IS GOING DOWN HILL WITH THIS PERSON AT THE HELM.

  19. Sean

I love blogging and getting comments but I would never want to receive a phone call from someone I didn’t know who read my blog. Having a phone conversation is completely different than shooting the crap back and forth in web site comments. What would they say?
“Hi, I read your article and it was cool!”
    “Uhh thanks!” *click*

I can only see it working for something like dating web site where you actually want to meet someone face to face or at least talk to them first. Other than that, would anyone reallly want to use this??? :)

  20. Another James

    James @ #19:

Get some manners, dude. And while we’re discussing manners, Dave Winer needs to desperately work on his people skills too.

Some folks have been incredibly rude to Natalie and I think that there’s more than a little sexism involved. Have you ever started a new job? I bet folks were nice to you and tried to cut you some slack. So show the same courtesy to Natalie.

As for Jaxter, while it’s not something I’d use, I can see a lot of teens and twenty-somethings (especially women) using it to connect with folks on the internet in a fairly safe way. So…let the market operate as economists are find of saying. If the product doesn’t meet folks needs, jaxter will go out of business soon enough.

  21. Another James

Correction — that’s James at #18 and the spelling is jaxtr. So sue me. :>

  22. Natali Del Conte

Thanks Another James! Good to have you in my corner!

  23. Vineet

James #18, you’re an idiot .. find something better to do with your time than harassing people online

  24. Jianing

So what’s to stop prankster shutting this down just like they did google click to call?

  25. Shane

    Nice site :(

Tried signing up andFirefox 1.5 crashed. It worked in IE6 but took over 2 minutes. They must be running on Intel PII! Because it can’t be because of Java!!!

  26. arnab

good post by natali actually. tells me things dont look gangbusters at linkedin right?

  27. tobto

web2.0 is a future. I believe in jaxtr!

I read your informative article about Jaxtr in today’s TechCrunch. While the concept can offer a valuable service to DESKTOP/NOTEBOOK users who wish to place calls to any phone, users are moving to the MOBILE internet space.

I thought you should be aware of ViiBlast.com, our startup company based in California, which offers services in the mobile interent services space. Of particular relevance, ViiBlast.com is a service with a bundle of features that allows users to send pictures and videos to any mobile phone, upload and playback your music and videos from your phone, and create ringtones, wallpaper, greeting cards, blogs, and more. The service has an easy to use control panel that is simple enough for any individual user and powerful enough for an enterprise level campaign sending out millions of videos.

Another feature this company has is ViiPad, a special user interface for mobile phones. If you use the web on your mobile phone, entering “www.viiblast.com” will take you to the login and password. After logging in from your mobile phone, you can see your contacts, send messages, listen to your uploaded music, view your uploaded videos, view your blog, all on the wireless net via the 2nd generation backbone.

You are invited to check out our website (alpha) and sign up for a free account:

hmm.. will it work with any platform? Like http://www.indyarocks.com (this hasnt started yet. saw it recently though)? or will the company need to tie up with each and every site?

  30. David Mackey

Can’t say I really want to be contacted by phone. Just don’t have the time to spend chatting away. Rather answer emails or comments.

  31. DC

For dating sites this makes sense, for bloggers, makes no sense at all.

We have been offering a widget click to call service for a few months as a test, and have seen some success. Click to call is being pushed by MSN/live local site, google local as well. There is merit to click to call for web to voice call requests. We have believed that for years and have 1,000’s of users on our click to call platform and pay per call advertising platform backing this up. So don’t discount the value and convenience of such services.

  32. SZ

That’s cool. An easy way to talk directly with friends in the virtual world. Good for hook girls in myspace like sites.
