That's cool. An easy way to talk directly with friends in the virtual world. Good for hook girls in myspace like sites.

For dating sites this makes sense, for bloggers, makes no sense at all.

We have been offering a widget click to call service for a few months as a test, and have seen some success. Click to call is being pushed by MSN/live local site, google local as well. There is merit to click to call for web to voice call requests. We have believed that for years and have 1,000's of users on our click to call platform and pay per call advertising platform backing this up. So don't discount the value and convenience of such services.

Can't say I really want to be contacted by phone. Just don't have the time to spend chatting away. Rather answer emails or comments.

I read your informative article about Jaxtr in today's TechCrunch. While the concept can offer a valuable service to DESKTOP/NOTEBOOK users who wish to place calls to any phone, users are moving to the MOBILE internet space.

I thought you should be aware of ViiBlast.com, our startup company based in California, which offers services in the mobile interent services space. Of particular relevance, ViiBlast.com is a service with a bundle of features that allows users to send pictures and videos to any mobile phone, upload and playback your music and videos from your phone, and create ringtones, wallpaper, greeting cards, blogs, and more. The service has an easy to use control panel that is simple enough for any individual user and powerful enough for an enterprise level campaign sending out millions of videos.

Another feature this company has is ViiPad, a special user interface for mobile phones. If you use the web on your mobile phone, entering "www.viiblast.com" will take you to the login and password. After logging in from your mobile phone, you can see your contacts, send messages, listen to your uploaded music, view your uploaded videos, view your blog, all on the wireless net via the 2nd generation backbone.

You are invited to check out our website (alpha) and sign up for a free account:
www.ViiBlast.com

For more information, please contact CEO Robert Salinas (760)218-1733 or myself at (760)641-8830.

Sincerely,

Tried signing up andFirefox 1.5 crashed. It worked in IE6 but took over 2 minutes. They must be running on Intel PII! Because it can't be because of Java!!!

James @ #19:

Get some manners, dude. And while we're discussing manners, Dave Winer needs to desperately work on his people skills too.

Some folks have been incredibly rude to Natalie and I think that there's more than a little sexism involved. Have you ever started a new job? I bet folks were nice to you and tried to cut you some slack. So show the same courtesy to Natalie.

As for Jaxter, while it's not something I'd use, I can see a lot of teens and twenty-somethings (especially women) using it to connect with folks on the internet in a fairly safe way. So...let the market operate as economists are find of saying. If the product doesn't meet folks needs, jaxter will go out of business soon enough.

I love blogging and getting comments but I would never want to receive a phone call from someone I didn't know who read my blog. Having a phone conversation is completely different than shooting the crap back and forth in web site comments. What would they say?
"Hi, I read your article and it was cool!"
"Uhh thanks!" *click*

I can only see it working for something like dating web site where you actually want to meet someone face to face or at least talk to them first. Other than that, would anyone reallly want to use this??? :)

Rational Beaver and TechTalk got it right. That's why Jangl requires callers to verify their phone number the first time in. If you're protecting someone's privacy, then you gotta protect someone's privacy.

In addition, we've learned that the double blind call thing is klunky for consumers. Prior models have learnt us that lesson already. That's why when you click a Jangl widget, you get a phone number. And you can use that number again in the future. People know how to use the phone, so that needs to be leveraged.

(I'm w/ Jangl so I'm biased).

#11/#14...

you know.. just because you can, doesn't mean you should!!! this (in my humble opinion) is one of these things that a couple of engineers build, without ever checking to determine the viability.

but i look forward to future lawsuits as someone gets swamped by someone using this as a prank...

as i understand it.. couldn't someone essenstially create a 'bot' to use/call someone 1000's of times using one of these widgets...

where's the real biz model/value?

i mean hell, half the sites i see, don't have adaquate contact numbers as it is!!

as someone pointed out, if someone wanted you to call, it's pretty easy to place your phone number on the page.

peace!

TechTalk hit the nail on the head. This didn't work for Google (due to the volume of prank calls) and it won't work for Jaxter for the same reason.
