I went searching for a free web host and I actually found that when it comes to free you usually get what you (don't) pay for. With that in mind I then found great hosting at a very competitive rate. The best part is they offer compensation, this way I don't have to come out of pocket for the products that I need. I actually come out on top every month which in my opinion is 10x better than free.

Puppy Parade
I stayed late last night with fellow intern buddy Sam, and we went through back issues of the magazine. Seven days left of the internship, and I'm only beginning to realize that I'm such a small part of this very large, very old literary tradition. I feel fortunate to have had this opportunity, but I have to say it's gone all too fast. I could have used a few more months at least. Seven days and I'm once again at a crossroads with a hundred different paths before me and only the dimmest sense of which way I want to go. I feel somewhat smarter this time around, and having jumped off the edge at least once already, it's a lot less intimidating. Still, the whole ordeal is all very daunting and depressing.

To chear myself up, I walked past the puppy store on the way home tonight. I don't think I ever saw a puppy store in DC, but in New York, they seem to be everywhere. Of course, I took it upon myself early on to memorize the locations of at least three so that I would be prepared when times like these arise. Sometimes all you need is a little puppy love. I was admiring their furry little ewok faces through the plated glass, basquing in their puppy glow when an older woman came up and began gushing about how she wanted to buy each and every one of them. At this moment, a second woman appeared, who looked every bit like the wicked witch of the west reinterpreted as a middle-aged Jewish woman. And like the Wicked Witch, she evidently hated puppies and happiness. The heartless shrew had to rain on our puppy parade. "You don't want to buy those," she grunted. "They're sick. They're from puppy farms, you know. How sad." And then she puttered away, having sufficiently ruined my one little spot of sunshine in this otherwise gloomy day.

Look at this cute little face. How can this face make you sad? Impossible, I say.

I think the free hosting arises from the fact that Jimmy Wales has decided to compete with Google (and with the Google business model) on many different fronts.

[...] Today I had a image of a document that I needed to convert to text. In this age of free web apps I wondered whether there was a Free OCR web app. I found Jon Galloway’s post which basically concludes there are no satisfactory free OCR app. He did find Microsoft Office Document Imaging acceptable, but its not free and its not on the web. It comes with Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2003. I also discovered this web OCR app, but I did not get a chance to try it because the document I needed to OCR was in PDF format.
I think its different, b/c Wordpress is just a blog. This is pretty much a Digg. You fill out a form and get your own Digg. Let's say your into fly fishing . . . you can have a fly fishing Digg. Or your into the S.F. 49ers, you can have a 49ers Digg.

If I read the tour correctly, that's what's going on. Sounds cool.

How is this much different in concept from wordpress.com? http://wordpress.com/

Other than different types of open source sw packages (wordpress.com only offers...obviously...wordpress) it seems to be basically the same concept. You can keep all of the advertising revenue from wordpress.com. They pay for the infrastructure and hosting costs. It is free.

Am I missing something?
