New Stuff At YouTube
by Michael Arrington on December 9, 2006

YouTube added two new significant features late this week - Quick Capture and Streams.

The more interesting of the two new features is Quick Capture, which lets users record video directly from their computers and record it on YouTube. Previously, users had to record video some other way, then upload the video to YouTube for Flash encoding. With Quick Capture, the number of steps are reduced, making it much easier to create online video. This is particularly useful as a way to leave quick video comments to other videos. There are no editing functions, so this is for the quick and easy recording. I expect this tool to have a measurable impact on the number of new videos on YouTube…just make sure you don’t have any copyrighted music playing in the background when you record.

Streams is a feature still being tested in YouTube’s lab, called TestTube. Users can create and/or join themed “rooms” that have a number of videos lined up at the top. All users in the room participate in a group chat, and users can add their own videos to the queue. It’s an interesting feature, and I wouldn’t mind having a chat box on every YouTube video. But at the end of the day, “time shifted chat”, or the comments left on videos, are a more interesting way to discuss them. I’m not as excited by it as other bloggers, and my guess is Streams doesn’t make it out of the lab, or will have limited appeal to YouTube users.

Wow! A lot of these are going to be very useful. The tools to record right to youtube are going to really show a significant impact on the number of videos uploaded each month. I know I’ve decided not to make some for that very reason.

Great work guys, keep it up.

More video’s yes, however I suspect the quality of videos will be reduced due to the impromptu nature of the feature and the over all lack of editing. I would like to see YOUTUBE come up with a Content Recommendation system similar to Amazon, Netflix or Loomia, something that knows what I like and makes recommendations based on my behavior. A system like this is going to be necessary with the new influx of videos. Just my 2-cent’s.

Now the naked dude on the bed is going to post more videos about you! D:

Copyediting Cody’s comment:

“a significant impact on the number of _crap_ videos uploaded each month”

The only genre of video that you could conceivably make with this new tool is the jabbering aimless comment or response variety, the multimedia MySpacey crap. It’ll just make the good stuff harder to find — hopefully Google comes to the rescue and implements their search syntax.

Didn’t we all decide somewhere along the line that user generated content is good? :-)

i think its cool…like podcast, but with video, vcast; the only problem i have is that youtube doesn’t allow porn.

uncutvideo.aol.com already has this feature. Yes, somebody pointed out that these features lack flexibility of editing and possibility of more _crap.

Whose the dude who hasn’t paid his electric bill in the screenshot?

I second that.

“just make sure you don’t have any copyrighted music playing in the background when you record”. To put it mildly, does anyone do this now, or have they added copyright digital signature checking to their software?

“Content recommendation” - this would be tough, but cool. In the end though, it probably wouldn’t be a whole lot different than filtering the Top Views Today/Week/etc. by rating/category.

#8 great comment. I was trying to think of something clever like “link to hunky chubby dude video plz!”

But…… “who’s” and “whose” ….. ’tis a pet-peeve of mine.

I just added a video illustrating the use of an attenuator on a guitar amp. That was pretty easy. I even avoided playing Canon in D.

I think Streams could be pretty popular, but probably with a younger teenage crowd.

i never tried to post videos on youtube…bcuz i thought it was maybe to hard or something!lol..but after reading these comments it must be easier than ever…so watch out for my first youtube video!coming soon…

Things appear to be moving towards community vedio conferencing chat inthe real time. When will we have a global Classroom teaching all those interested in best quality education.

I really enjoy the mood in you2be…I saw a video there about a “hug campaign”..really made me moved. The value of you2be is not their business model, it’s the mood of the community….

This video-capture-in-a-web-page feature has been around in other similar video sharing sites since ‘99. I was wondering when YouTube would get around to including it.

However, their implementation seems very flakey. Out of 4 attempts, I could only get it to work once. Plus it is a *must have* requirement to be able to review the recorded clip before uploading it for transcoding. Without that feature, it’s not super useful.

I’m looking forward to these features becoming mainstream. Editing will always be a problem with Flash webcam recordings because the audio is proprietary. It’s from NellyMoser and the licensing terms are high.

The implementation is flakey–there’s no reason for it. Our server (out in January; beta available now) performs both of these functions–record and stream–and it runs rock solid. It’s a true RTMP server and will be a lot cheaper than Adobe Flash Media Server.

If you’re interested the beta referred to above is available at http://www.wowzamedia.com.

I’d captured myself with Mobiola webcam from my mobile phone and have shared this video quickly.
