The founders say, "translating the awesome power of statistical packages such as R or SAS would be a futile exercise." I believe what's really needed is a tool that goes far beyond the power of those statistical packages with a nice Web 2.0 front end on it. SAS is a dinosaur (but one filled with good statitistical algorithms), and if Swivel can't even aim higher than SAS, I'm disappointed. After all, if Google had settled for something less than revolutionary in search technology, where would we be today? The true "YouTube of Data" will have to be a Web 2.0 app that is _more_ powerful than SAS and that handles large data sets easily. Finding *useful* new information from the massive amounts of data that could be assembled at a site like this will take a statistics breakthrough along the lines of Googles breakthroughs in search. And these guys aren't even going in that direction. Therefore, I'm afraid the result will be just a toy that doesn't do much more than add some charting or graphing capabilities to the communication functionality that is present everywhere on the web now. If Swivel isn't a fundamentally powerful data tool, will people really maintain much enthusiasm for presenting trivial charts?
