[...] There's something more to this than I can put into words right now. The idea of posting data sets for all to use is amazingly interesting to me. I guess all those years of regression analysis in Quattro Pro while in engineering school are coming back to haunt me. Whatever it is, the idea of people synthesizing conclusions based on a broad set of data contributed by the commons is…fascinating. Imagine if this existed in verticals: what if you could find recall data for autos, consumer preferences for cereals. If there were a way for the individual to contribute their data to this, it might be a step in the direction of VRM. Companies could use something like swivel as the place to see what the market was up to.
[...] The economics major in me is drooling over a new site called Swivel whose founders describe the service as “YouTube for data.” Users upload data sets via a clean, intuitive interface, add metadata (description, source, tags), and publish for the world to parse as it wishes. I’m excited because a) data sets can be notoriously difficult to dig up (and either time or cost prohibitive), b) the field could use a nice injection of creativity (a la Steven Levitt) which scores of data sets in a single place are bound generate, and c) Swivel makes data fun.
Hey Dave (#93),

Interesting comment. You've actually summarized a bunch of our thinking here, only with a different conclusion. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

[...] Now this looks interesting. Swivel is a new site that aims to be the “Youtube of data”, with a Flickr-like interface and a means for users to upload interesting sets of data and make them available for everyone to download. Once data is uploaded, you can match it up with other sets of data (global GDP vs. global temperature, wine consumption correlated with violent crime for example), graph it, and publish it for other to comment on.
Typically, conclusions reached on the basis of exploring data looking for correlations are faulty conclusions.

The founders say, "translating the awesome power of statistical packages such as R or SAS would be a futile exercise."

I believe what's really needed is a tool that goes far beyond the power of those statistical packages with a nice Web 2.0 front end on it. SAS is a dinosaur (but one filled with good statitistical algorithms), and if Swivel can't even aim higher than SAS, I'm disappointed. After all, if Google had settled for something less than revolutionary in search technology, where would we be today? The true "YouTube of Data" will have to be a Web 2.0 app that is _more_ powerful than SAS and that handles large data sets easily. Finding *useful* new information from the massive amounts of data that could be assembled at a site like this will take a statistics breakthrough along the lines of Googles breakthroughs in search. And these guys aren't even going in that direction.

Therefore, I'm afraid the result will be just a toy that doesn't do much more than add some charting or graphing capabilities to the communication functionality that is present everywhere on the web now.

If Swivel isn't a fundamentally powerful data tool, will people really maintain much enthusiasm for presenting trivial charts?

Again, it will only be a solid product if it can do real and meaningful things. If it did lead to a valid scientific discovery, Swivel would be on the front cover of major media sites. But the founders are telling us they aren't even trying to enable that kind of capability.

Finding *useful* new information from the massive amounts of data that could be assembled at a site like this will take a statistics breakthrough along the lines of Googles breakthroughs in search. And these guys aren’t even going in that direction.

Therefore, I’m afraid the result will be just a toy that doesn’t do much more than add some charting or graphing capabilities to the communication functionality that is present everywhere on the web now.

If Swivel isn’t a fundamentally powerful data tool, will people really maintain much enthusiasm for presenting trivial charts?

Again, it will only be a solid product if it can do real and meaningful things. If it did lead to a valid scientific discovery, Swivel would be on the front cover of major media sites. But the founders are telling us they aren’t even trying to enable that kind of capability.

Swivel sounds entertaining, but certainly has very limited use for "academic" research (as some are calling it). I certainly would not upload any of my data to a website with unknown security protocols. I imagine it will be used mostly by undergrads trying to get out of learning how use a real stats program for some introductory stats course.

[...] Swivel - Innovative Data Monopoly Published December 7th, 2006 in blog, data, information and networking. Swivel, though in preview/beta mode, just recently gained a lot of attention for their new data site. Swivel displays user uploaded data nice and visually for you to see and grasp. According to Michael Arrington, covering the story at TechCrunch, explains how this tool will be in demand by analysist’s (number crunching researchers) on the one side. And at the same time provides entertaining comparisons for just about anything. Blogs have commented that Swivel may become the Internet Archive for Data. However this could be of concern, if one site controls almost all data, user rated or not, this could be abused for economical or political gain. The possibility of errors and complete incorrect data will widely be present, regardless of the fact that users would have to rate the data for it to gain public opinion. What makes thousands of voters/ratings qualified or educated to determine the quality of the data? All you readers and the rest of the internet population, will likely have some of the same questions. The uncertainty the questions leave may effect the trust that Swivel data will be given. Nodalities also sees the dangers. Finishing I would like to mention some more of the pros. Users will more easily have access to data. Your data can contribute to some interesting observations and realizations. Data can more easily be understood and deciphered. Make You Go Hmm has a nice demo of how Swivel works. You should however take a look at Swivel.com and try it out for yourself, before agreeing with me. Because most comments about Swivel at the moment are “at a first glance”. A real review of Swivel will take several months of testing and comparing, but the potential to meet their goal to become the YouTube of data is definitely a possibility. [...]
