[...] This announcement solves at least some of the mystery behind Wikia’s purchase of ArmchairGM earlier this month. ArmchairGM is the first freely-licensed software package that OpenServing will offer up. It is also noteworthy that Wikia received an undisclosed amount of funding from Amazon just weeks ago, which is likely an important contributing factor to Wikia’s ability to do this.
[...] 2. Techcrunch reports Wikia is buying ArmChairGM for $2 million dollars. Not bad for one year’s work, especially considering their Alexa is currently 97,466 (not that Alexa is always 100% accurate). ArmChairGM has a healthy 1,242 users. But TechCrunch seems to feel ArmChairGM was bought for their Digg technology more than their userbase. Will be very interesting to see how Wikia applies this technology. [...]

As someone in the sports content biz, I'm amazed at this price for the content. Even on the day of acquisition they really only had 15-25 page edits. Sportiki has only had 20 edits in last five days. A site I set up like wikipedia for niche baseball content (lots of history) has had 200 edits so far today.

[...] As leaked on TechCrunch, Wikia has acquired ArmchairGM! The sports site is running a heavily adapted MediaWiki and includes the traditional wiki features as well as blogs, easy commenting and voting functionality which allows the community to select the best content to automatically feature on the site’s home page. The site was created by Robert Lefkowitz, Aaron Wright, Dan Lewis and David Pean who we are really pleased to have joining Wikia. They seem to have a great sense of community which they’ve been able to apply to ArmchairGM. They’ve also developed some interesting features which we hope to integrate into some of our existing wikis. See the Head Scout page for example, which tracks the site activity (including votes, edits, and comments) in real time with no need to refresh. We’ll be releasing a related site at OpenServing.com very soon which will allow bloggers to make use of ArmChairGM content on their own sites. [...]

$2 million for a website that maybe 300 people seem to be using? Why don't they just make their own Digg clone?

It doesn't matter all that much how a website looks.

For goodness sake, look at Craigs List!

These guys have a hold on a targeted niche and Wikia is smart to make a low cost acquisition.

It can only boost their ad revenue in the longterm, especially if they can enhance the site and continue to build the user base.

Good Success!

yuck X( the website design is nauseating.

What exactly is so bad about it? I'll admit there are some things they could to do enhance the design but to deem a website as "yuck" sounds like something a 10 year old would say. Unless the demographic for techcrunch is seeing a new wave of underage users these days.
