Britney Owns Yahoo Searches…Again
by Natali Del Conte on December 4, 2006

Why are you people searching for Britney Spears!? She is hardly the eye candy she once was so I just don’t understand how she has topped Yahoo’s most popular search terms for the fifth time in six years but is appears that the flashing, divorcing baby mama has.

Tonight at 9 p.m. PST, Yahoo will release their most popular search terms of 2006. In the top five are Britney, WWE, Shakira, Jessica Simpson, and Paris Hilton.

When the site goes live, users will see that this year, Yahoo scored the most popular user-generated content in addition to most popular Internet searches. The list includes the top online videos, top Flickr photos, and top Yahoo Answers content.

In other celebrity news, the top famous baby list is led by Suri Cruise, daughter of TomKat, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, daugher of Brangelina, and Britney’s two sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. Other top-ten results will include celebrity searches, news stories, TV shows, sports teams, song lyrics, movies, World Cup players, blogs and bloggers, and politicians.

It’s not that I have anything against Britney because I’d like to see her reclaim her hot self just as much as the next person. But I do wish that people were searching for more productive terms. I guess it goes to show that the Internet is not the intellectual hub that those of us who work in tech would like to think it is. But at least there is no shortage of cultural capital.

“I guess it goes to show that the Internet is not the intellectual hub that those of us who work in tech would like to think it is.”

nope, nope it’s not.

Natali, can we get more pictures of you in the about page? Or can you point us to the right page to see more of you?

Natali - There are pictures of Britney’s cha-cha floating around. It’s not hard to imagine why she’s blowing up the search engines.

Why are you people searching for Britney Spears!? She is showing bush on the web - her privates w/ Cesarean scar.

She was “the hit” at a house party I was at on Saturday night.

Get a clue Geeks!

I guess I am in the extreme minority that thinks she was never hot, now or then. Still not much surprise as the reasons why as Suedelock pointed out above

@ Jose, I think you’re posting to the wrong thread, try this one: http://www.techcrunch.com/2006.....find-love/ :)

“But I do wish that people were searching for more productive terms. ”

Techchrunch is so cute. The editors here just can’t understand why a fun topic like “differential calculus” isn’t one of the top search terms on Yahoo.

But at least there is no shortage of cultural capital
Britney Spears, WWE, Shakira, Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton. Nuff said.

And yes, Micheal is right. Also Marshall needed a while to develop his style and we all should admire Natali for feeling confident enough to start writing on one of the most read (and critical) blogs.

Is it an illusion or have I seen 3-4 articles on Yahoo! in last 3 days?

I think the reality is that five years ago, people searched for “Britney Spears” for her celebrity status, tours, albums, merchandise, etc. Whereas, today, it’s not surpising, there are equalivalent searches for “Britney Spears” for the tabloid drama of her marriage/divorce, babies, cooch pictures, and all the gossip in between. And, of course, there are still those pervs that are looking for her nude pics and sex video with K-Fed. ugh.

I’m a little disappointed seeing celebrity gossip on TechCrunch.

Is a sex column next, a la Wired.com?

I agree, I don’t care about stuff like this. The mere name Paris Hilton makes most shudder at this point, but I’m sure this is all about Yahoo PR working their magic to attract the demographic that does care about celebrities to their site.

This is why non-geek focused sites like Popsugar and Daily Candy are so successful, while 99% of all the Web 2.0ish startups will all fail.

Folks want a peek… there are a lot of “peeping toms” out there.

OY - this really is the end of civilization. damn. i was just starting to make a little money :) .

If you guys don’t want to read a post about this, there’s a real simple answer: skip this post.

It’s not hard to see that the post isn’t truly about Britney Spears, but more about the web as a whole.

Natali is questioning why people are still obsessed with a washed up pop singer, a night-vision goggle porn star, etc. and looking at search results for Yahoo.

The article itself isn’t about Britney Spears, but even if it were, why does it matter? It’s not hard to scroll down or up the page, or to just skip over this headline in your feed-reader. Lay off Nat.

“Natali is questioning why people are still obsessed with… etc” because the majority of internet users are just average normal people with less productive terms..

Nick,
Thanks. But I doubt that the women on those dating sites are as smart and pretty as Natali.

These search terms being top of the list has a hidden meaning behind them, really. You really think the internet is all that wonderful and intellectually stimulating?

I’m thinking, some company is going to make a fortune some day if they are able to detect and block all adult content.

I too, would like to see
Ms. Spears retain her top billing.

It’s coz she’s auditioning for the Vagina Monologues. It’s just that she hasn’t really understood the concept very well yet.

I think TechCrunch is not the right place for discussing the celebrity gossip. I think if we continue with the discussion then next time again we will see the same results.

Natali.. Did you get inspired by the same television special I did on December 4th about these topics. heh

Because it is in the same order ^_-.

It is most likely more Woman then men searching Britney spears. Fat girls make other fat girls feel comforted… Or some type of female superiority thing who knows.

Media and Celebrities are made for each other. They feed each other. MediaVidea has wriietn on the Topic - Wy Celebrities and Media go hand in Hand.

the Internet is not the intellectual hub that those of us who work in tech would like to think it is

Anyone who thinks the internet is not a fetish haven is in denial. I am being absolutely serious. EVERY entertainment/social medium (magazines, TV, movies, talk radio) is primarily an outlet for gossip and desire.

It just goes to show the state of our country where the list is full of nothing but hot chicks and guys who are beating each other with chairs. Here is my opinion on the matter.

My girlfriend Britney is an athlete at Hilton High School.

Britney tried out for girls wrestling and for girls boxing. Britney didn’t care for girls wrestling, because her singlet pulled up in Britney’s crotch and let everybody see Britney’s panties. The audience would chant, “We’ve seen Paris, it’s in France; we’ve seen Britney’s underpants.” She tried wrestling without underpants, but everyone started a rumor that Britney went commando or Britney is allergic to underpants. Her coach Rosie said Britney should put some panties on.

Britney preferred boxing because people couldn’t see Britney’s underpants. Britney soon realized she was a better boxer than wrestler. Others agreed.

Kevin, the bus driver, is like a lot of people. He knew about Britney’s wrestling, but he’d never seen her box. So after driving Britney’s team to the Class AA girls boxing finals last season, Kevin decided to see for himself what all the fuss was about. Kevin said “Now I understand what everybody’s been talking about, Britney can’t wrestle, but you ought to see her box.”

Britney is a credit to her sex, but the future for girls’ boxing is a little hard to predict. Boxing is badly funded for boys, let alone girls, and there is still a resistance to girls boxing. Whatever happens, I’m glad I got a chance to say, “Britney can’t wrestle, but I got to see her box.”
